View Full Version : Vegas 8.0c freeze issue with clip

Check out this clip (http://jewellhome.net/hmc/00030.zip) in Sony Vegas Pro 8.0c. When I drop it on the timeline and preview it, it gets hung on one of the final frames and Vegas locks up (CPU util sticks at around 50%).
I have two systems, one with XP and one with Vista. I've seen it happen with both systems, but I only tried on my vista system with this clip. Most clips work fine.
The clip plays fine in AVCViewer and VLC, so it doesn't appear to be an issue with the clip. And I can transcode it just fine with the Mainconcept transcoder, but then I need to use Raylight, which I don't own.:(
edit: fixed link.

Hi Kurt, I didn't try your clip but I have exactly the same problem here. The clip is 705 frames and Vegas locks anywhere between frames 550 and 695, depending I guess on how the earth, moon and stars are aligned. I tried the different preview settings and have also tried different memory allocations to the ram preview but can't detect any meaningful pattern. My footage is 720p24 and I'm using Vegas 8.0c.

I also suffered from this problem, it's totally random..... But now I'm mainly working with dvcpro hd files in premiere, so no problems so far.

Same here, Kurt. I was able to play audio, loop several clips before and after, but the clip hung at an image toward the end.
I will likely use DVCPro and HDV transcodes for some editing. The HDV encoded stuff from TMPGEnc is so good that it hardly matters that it is transcoded and it edits very smoothly.
DVCPro will be for most of my green screen work simply because I like the keying better than Vegas.
BTW. I did take the clip into Ulead (Corel-Ulead) VideoStudio Pro X2 and it edited very well, no problems at all.

I would like to use Vegas only and not have to spend more $$$, but it may not be the case for awhile. I'm going to follow up with Sony (good luck!) and see if I get any support.
In a pinch, I could pick up Ulead for cheap to transcode/re-encode clips that Vegas chokes on.

Kurt, I may be onto something. I discovered this with my clips and then downloaded yours and experienced the same thing. If I take any of my 720p24 clips and put a single one on the timeline Vegas 8c hangs at or very near the end of that clip (preview or render). If I overlap clips one after the other on the same track Vegas will continue to preview or render UNTIL it reaches the end of the right-most clip, then it hangs. This leads to a work-around: If you can use all overlaps and create loop around your entire project, stopping a second or so before the end of the last clip, you can preview or render the loop.
On another note, my HMC150 files are MTS whereas yours is m2ts. Why is this?

Answered the extension question in another thread (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=150181). I use the AVCViewer to copy files off the card. It changes the file extensions to maintain Blu-ray compatibility.
When you say "overlap the clips" do you mean crossfade between clips? That won't work in most cases. Thanks for the tip.

I passed my discovery on to Matt at Sony. Hopefully it will help him find out what is causing this problem.

Kurt, yes, I was referring to crossfades. But another workaround is to shorten the clip a few frames (i.e., drag the right edge in a couple of frames). Vegas will then preview/render past the new right edge without problem. This will let you do cuts if you don't mind shortening your clip a few frames.
Are you having the same experience I am - that ALL HMC150 clips freeze Vegas if the preview or render reaches the end of the clip?

Guys, I experience these exact same problems with HDV footage as well...
What I discovered was that Vegas is extremely sensitive to corrupt frames in long GOP video data. I occasionally have issues with one particular HDV camera that shoots 50P and sometimes when I'm capturing, Vegas will chop up the shot into 10 or 100 small (less than 1MB) files which forces me to capture using HDVSplit, however when I'm editing or rendering these clips is when Vegas crashes.
I believe Vegas has a real problem with highly compressed long GOP files that aren't totally solid and Sony really needs to address this situation - I've lodged 2 fault reports over the last year and to date all of this remains unresolved. It's so darn frustrating when you've got a huge backlog of editing to do and the damn thing crashes - especially annoying when you've set something to render overnight only to come back the next morning and find Vegas hung :(
There are times I wish knew how to use Premier or Edius :(

It is sad. From what I've seen, it happens at the end of the clip. Not all AVCHD clips do this for me, just a few. For me, I can shoot a few extra seconds and shorten to avoid the issue. I've been searching the vegas support forum and it seems many are frustrated with the stability issue. I like Vegas and would prefer to continue using it. For HMC users, Raylight is an option, but it costs $$ too.
Doas anyone from tech support respond at all over there?
It's a pity Vegas Pro 8 projects aren't backward compatible because until I moved up from Vegas 7 earlier this year I never experienced crashing problems.

Have you tried nesting the V8 project on the V7 timeline? Maybe that works?
Just drop the project file on the V7 timeline.

Interesting concept USLatin; I'll have to install v7 on one of my junk machines and see if it can nest the v8 veg files :)
Though, Sony needs to fix Vegas 8 because I'm certain v7 will not handle AVCCAM files natively ;)
