I just realized (with the help of Andy Mace) that the file extensions get changed when one uses the AVCViewer application. The files on the card are .mts while the files become .m2ts after AVCViewer copies them off the card. Not an issue, as far as I can tell but it might lead to some confusion.

.m2ts refers to the actual filename which follows bluray specs. If you peak into the clip files, they reference M2TS. .MTS is the 8.3 version of the file which Panasonic and other AVCHD manufacturers use which is a slight variation of the bluray spec. Similarly, other files in the structure also have 4 character extensions and are not all uppercase. My guess is that they decided to go with 8.3 to keep things compatible with the DVD media devices. Modern players/software will be able to work with either version, but older bluray players expect to see the non-8.3 version. With some tedious file renaming you can do this on your own, but the AVCCAM viewer can do most of the work for you.
