I see HVX rentals in the $200 range mostly. I've seen $175, and I've seen $250.
To those of you who own your own HVX, when you do a freelance gig, how much do you usually charge the client for your HVX rental?

You might want to do a quick search here on the forum. This has been discussed several times in the past.

I just rented an HVX200 with two 8gig cards fir $250/day. It rented on a 3 day's rental per week, so $750 per week. Just make sure your camera is in tip-top shape and the P2 cards are erased before you rent or you'll have very pissed-off clients.

Here in Atlanta the local rental houses rent the HVX with Sticks, batteries and one P2 card for $350.00. Additional cards are $45 for a 16GB card.
I rent mine for $250.00 with 2 16gb cards, sticks, UV filter, and 3 batteries.
The general rule is that rental gear is about 2.5-5% retail cost per day.
It seems that most rental gear rents for lower percentages the higher the retail cost. They charge like 3 for a sandbag!!

I charge $350/day for a package that includes:
HVX200
(3) 8gb cards
6 Batteries
Century .75x WA adapter
P2 Store
Laptop
Sticks
SD monitor
160gb Firewire drive - just in case
My theory was to try and make the transition for some of my clients to P2 as simple as just bringing a hard drive - They don't have the time or inclination to try and figure out the P2 workflow.

Here in SLC - $350 a day with (2) 16 gig cards.
$300 per day for camera plus $100 for 2 16 GB cards.
HVX200A @ $150/day with 2 16GB cards, 3 batteries, Libec sticks and an SD monitor. My site is cheapp2.com.

HVX200 (including 2 batteries) 39 Euros a day, 32 gig P2 is 11 Euros
This is from the cheapest renting house over here. http://dv-kameraverleih.de/
I would rent mine out for maybe 150 Euros, if someone would pay so much.

I like to get $360 with 2 16gbs cards and a tripod. occasionally i'll go as low as $275, but usually only on multi-day stuff.

Sorry this is off topic.
Pardon my ignorance but what are "sticks"?

tripod=sticks
I have a website and an ad on Mandy.com that links to it and I can get no one who'll rent my HVX200A, (2) 16GB cards, 3 batteries, sticks and 13" SD Sony monitor for $150. If you get $360 I must be doing something wrong!

You can hardly get little SD cams for $150 a day here in our market. $300+ including / not including media is fairly standard all around I'd imagine.

Your not by any chance in the Southern CA area are you? Cuz i've got a 200a, but I'll definitely rent your cards, battery, and monitor!
And on the subject of rentals in the SoCal area, anyone know where I can rent a Letus Extreme for a decent price?

The local rental houses in Minneapolis charge $250 for the HVX200 with 1 battery and no cards. I used to charge $200 for the HVX200 with 2 batteries and no cards. Now that I got the HPX170 I charge $225 with 2 batteries and no cards. The going rate for P2 cards at the rental houses in Minneapolis are $15 for a 4gig, $30 for an 8gig, $35 for a 16gig, and $65 for a 32gig. I only have 1 16gig and I charge $30 for it. Hope that helps.

are y'all typically renting this out to strangers, or is this the rate you charge someone who wants you to DP and rent your equipment?

Well... for such situations there's a very nice rule...
Charge the lowest, you can afford (or justify).
Don't be a money-grubber.

I get $250/day for my HVX pkg(Cam,sticks,16gig card, batteries). Lights extra, Firestore extra, me extra. In the 2 years Ive owned this camera I have always been rented with the camera.
If i'm behind the HVX add $400, if I'm behind a higher end tool, say an F900 or Varicam add $650.

How do you handle the issues like damage, theft, and loss when you rent your own camera(s) out?

Actually, I would argue the complete opposite...
Charge the highest price THEY can afford (or justify)
DO be a money-grubber
We're in Crisis after all

HVX Rental in Seattle. Details (http://www.surroundmedia.com/rental/prod_hvx.html)
Insurance is the biggest issue. Though most shooters are very conscientious, things WILL happen and it will likely cost you in ways you didn't expect. If you purchased a camera so it would be there for your use at a moments notice, be sure you're ok with it going to Panasonic for repair for a month when someone else breaks it.
Have a contract, get a deposit for the full value of the equipment, cover yourself.

I'd like to know this as well... anyone care to fill us in on this?
justanormalguy, get a deposit for the camera? So you'd ask for $5?

Ha! Thats funny. Not sure if you're kidding.
No. I get a check for the full replacement value of the equipment. People want their check back and I want my equipment back. People seem to understand that pretty well.
They are trusting me not to deposit it, and I am trusting them to return thousands of dollars worth of my equipment.

All I'd say about renting out though, is know who you are renting too... and also get some type of renters insurance and or a deposit from them. I've seen what happens to rental equipment.. including what has happened to mine.
I had a flash broken, my HVX screen scratched, and I had an old XL1 come back with sand under the lens and all over it as it was dropped in the sand at the beach...
As people say"... Don't be gentle, it's a rental! That's how a lot of people operate. They will rent YOUR cam and put that one in harms way. So just be prepared and covered.

HVX200A with two 16GB cards w/o operator rents for $300 at our Austin, Texas shop. If a client has insurance they can list us as additional insured. You can add equipment to your home owner's insurance policy but there might be a distinction between gear for a hobby versus for a business. I don't know if you can have additional insured on a home owners policy. It covers other people on your property but probably not off site.
i have always thought that as an owner/operator, renting out your camera to joe public at large - unless you set out to be a rental shop and have safeguards in place, is a path wrought with peril.
i wont even lend my gear to trusted pro-associates anymore (and some consider me lame for this) since i had a loaned consumer camera come back "dew-inflicted" and my ikan monitor come back with the fascia all jacked up. too many little unseen things can go wrong and it ends up in a he-said, they-said deal...

I rent to most anybody but require insurance (plus security deposit for deductible) or credit card authorization for full replacement value. I've been renting gear for two years now and oddly enough, my equipment has only been damaged by me. I rent mostly to small indies and small self financed productions. These folks tend to be very careful once you're authorized to to take their money. I do not accept a check in any form unless it's far enough in advance to clear. Checks can be cancelled. I require the full rental amount to reserve dates for rental. I charge 1/2 the rental fee for cancellations within 72 hours and the full rental fee for cancellations within 48 hours. All my rental guidelines are posted on my site and they must send me a confirmation that they'ev read it all. Everything is itemized and well doc'd on their invoice which they must sign. Only the credit card holder can sign for the gear.
I'm a big believer in renting my gear out as it not only pays itself off and makes you some money but it takes the pressure off to always pimp your gear when you're hired as a DP. I don't want to be one of those guys trying to use their gear when it isn't right for the gig just to make my monthly payment.
