Shot some footage of my two boys today at the beach....
720p/24pN
Frame rate 60
I think the shutter speed was @ 250
I over exposed it a bit on purpose to see what it would look like in post

Hi Jay:
Like the look and especially how your reds held in their shirts. Was this a stock preset or did you tweak? Which gamma?
Also, haven't heard that DD song since the 90s, forgot how much I like it ;-)

I love the way the slow-mo water looks in everyone's shots. I should be getting my hpx in about a week and of course one of the first things I'll do is find some water to shoot...lol

I too would love to hear about the scene file and grading for this. Great look.
This was without an adapter right?
Love the blacks on the water! I want this camera.

Fabulous footage here. Great colour and very smooth motion. You say that you over exposed it a little on purpose for post - so what did you do in post? It would be interesting to see the difference in the before and after. Keep them coming.
Thanks

Thanks for the recipe Jay. Cute boys and a nice day at the beach with your new 170, what could be better?

Jay - thanks for posting the original clip (and the settings). I'm really surprised the original was so light. However, the colour you've pulled out of it is fantastic, which has a lot to do with the quality of the codec I guess and you're knowledge of what you can do in post.
Will keep an eye out for any other tests you decide to share with us.
Thanks
Gary

-10 pedestal! haha... no wonder the blacks had so much depth... plus you were over-exposed a bit.
Very nice man. Thanks for the numbers.

that's out of 100, so it's really not the much.

OH!!! Wow! So that's like -10 out of -50 total? So like -3... it does look like more though... I use -2 most of the time... so I wonder if I did my math wrong or if the intensity of the Master Pedestal in the 170 is different from the 200, regardless of the numbers used?

Well actually I looked at it again and it does look right for -3. Nevermind.

It's 100 both ways. -100 and +100. It gives you much greater control.

wow... ok, so -10 is nothing... it looks surprisingly "milky".

lol, thanks guys...
puredrifting, thanks man, those dudes are my best buds!
GaryMM, thanks man. My knowledge isn't that deep, I'm just a dude trying to learn on a big curve, lol... I was originally a DVX guy and moved into the Canon A1 for a couple of years so being back in the Panasonic world but in HD, I have ALOT to learn.
USLatin, yep, DM_rider has it right... -10 isn't that much considering you can drill down to -100.

Jay,
Just curious, is your setup at 7.5? Although I believe I read that the default setup is supposed to be set at 0, my HPX170 came set at 7.5. If it is that could explain the lightness of the blacks in your raw footage. Love that slo-mo water too!

What are you referring to when you ask about 7.5?

In the menu under Camera Setup you'll see Aspect Conv, and Setup. Setup can be 0 or 7.5. The quick explanation is: Setup affects your black levels, unless your shooting directly for analog broadcast you want your setup to be 0. A much better thorough explanation can be found here: http://www.adamwilt.com/DV-FAQ-tech.html#Setup

Also Barry's book thatr came with your camera has some great, clear and easy to understand info on setup. Just for those of you who are non-old timers in video, set it to 0. It is kind of dumb that the default is set to 7.5 as hardly anyone in professional situations needs to add setup anymore unless they are shooting to an analog switcher or a Beta SP deck.

I just checked and yes, my camera was set at 7.5 too. strange....
i read the adam wilt article and was totally lost but barry's book was more understandable for a guys like me.
so my question is this, on the HPX170 would my footage look any different in post if I shot 7.5 or 0? barry's book sounds like the answer would be no on the HPX but yes on the HVX.

Digital is digital, setup is analog, you cannot add setup to the signal that the HPX records internally. But you can add it to te HPX's analog component output, causing you to monitor something other than what you are recording. Seeing an inaccurate picture on a monitor could cause you to really screw up your exposure and could make you adjust your black levels really incorrectly.

According to Barry's boof if you have it set to 7.5 it will add setup to your lcd monitor on the camera making your blacks appear slightly lighter than they are being recorded. So if you adjust to that you would probably screw up in the direction of making the blacks darker. This means my suggestion that that could be why the blacks are a little light in your raw footage is completely wrong.
