Best camera for a little more or less than 1000 dollars?

Hi

I need to buy a solid camera that will give me a good image, sound options (audio ports) and manual adjustments (focus zoom...) that i can just kind of throw around and get the job done...

Because of the economy right now... I want to stay within the $1000 range or a tiny bit higher...

what do you suggest...

I plan on doing events, documentary and my own independent projects
