View Full Version : Does EX1 has an HDMI out?
Will someone clarify to me if the EX1 has a HDMI out? I believed the lable says component and not HDMI. However, it does not look like component nor HDMI port. HDMI port is bigger and component contains Red, Blue, and Green. Am I missing something here?
Okay, so it seems I need something like this (http://cgi.ebay.com/5ft-Mini-HDMI-to-HDMI-Lead-Cable-for-Sony-Camera-DV-TV_W0QQitemZ370089706369QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item37 0089706369&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C 240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ebayphotohosting)to work with the mini-HDMI port from the EX1?

I don't think the PMW-EX1 has an HDMI Out, there is a HD-SDI to HDMI out converter from AJA, Model Hi5.
Okay, then what are those ports/connectors on the side?
Okay, here's the port I was referring to (component out):

The EX1 has a mini-D terminal for component video, and it has an HD-SDI output. It doesn't have HDMI.
And by the way, what cable is the A/V Out port use with?
Thanks, Barry.
Basically, I was looking for a way to play my clips from the EX1 to my HDTV for a quick preview.

1. A/V Cable (red/white, yellow).
2. Component
3. USB - to transfer files form the Camera to Computer.

Use the component out. It's VERY clean.
Thanks, EC Junior. However, here's my confusion. I have never seen a composit cable (red/white, yellow) that connects to an A/V connector like that. As for the Component Out connector, I have never seen a component cable (red/green/blue) that has a male head that would go into a female connector like that.
Any linkes to what those cables look like?

The problem is I'm not sure what kind of cable would connect to this Sony Component Out port and then go into the HDMI connector on my HDTV side.
Any suggestion?

No cable is possible, but converter and adaptor is possible.
Youc an always buy the BlackMagic HDLINK:

This is a SDI to DVI converter (approx $400). It comes with a DVI to HDMI adaptor.
I have this and it works great with the EX.
BTW, on the EX, the SDI out blows away the component out on video quality.
Thanks for the response, Stevet. I thought there is something simple like buying a cable and it just works. I'm not ready to buy a converter box just yet especially something cost in the hundred dollars and up.
So basically those A/V Out and Component Out are pretty much useless then, right?

This is why I suggested using the component out cable that comes with the camera. Connect it to the component connection on your TV/Monitor. You cannot connect it to the HDMI port.
You initially stated you wanted a quick preview. If you want a full quality HD viewing, then you're going to have to spend money.
Simple as that.

No, the component out is fine for viewing a field monitor and checking your overall footage later.

I fed live component out a couple months ago for and audience of over 700 people and they didn't realize that it wasn't HD.
I've also fed the normal A/V signal to my monitor and been more than pleased with it for focusing and composition. I wouldn't make crucial lighting decision with it, but it was fine for what I needed.
That's right, PerroneFord. I just wanted a quick preview. It would be nice if it is HD but it doesn't have to be.
I totally forgot about the component cable that came with the unit. I'll have to check the box again to see if the cable will work in my situation.
Again, many thanks for those contribute to this thread.

Oh,
If the distance from the camera to the monitor is going to be some distance, just buy some long RCA cables and 3 female-to-female RCA adapters. That should take care of it. In my case, I did 3 RCA-BNC because the runs were almost 100ft.
Best of luck!

Quick posts!
I would like to add also:
All three cables comes with the camera too.
USB Cable
A/V Connecting Cable
Component Video Cable

But the component signal *is* HD... or are you saying you had it set to downconvert?

^ Yeah, that confused me also.

Oh sorry, yes I set it to downconvert to 4:3 since that is what I had to feed.
Okay, I finally have the chance to find the Sony cable that came with the camera. Does anyone know if there is a cable similar to Sony's component cable but instead of component it's HDMI at the RGB end? If that's not possible, where do I find longer cable of the same version of the component cable that Sony shipped with the EX1? I need the cable to be 6 to 8 feet long at least.

Why not just buy a long 3-cable RCA? That's going to be a lot cheaper...
Otherwise I think you'll be looking for a component to HDMI box. Blackmagic and I think AJA make them.

Lor... no. Component is analog HD, and video only. HDMI is digital and can carry an audio stream as well as a video stream. You cannot find a cable that is mini-d component one end and HDMI at the other as it's physically impossible.
All you need to extend the component cable is buy a regular component cable and some RCA couplers to go with the existing cable.
The alternative is to buy and SDI-HDMI converter box. That would allow you to take the SDI out and convert it to HDMI... but the component cables/RCA coupler option is going to be a heckuva lot cheaper.
Thanks for the input. I was just curious if there is such a thing out there. Anyway, I'll search for a RCA couplers to extend my existing cable for longer lengths.

One other option I will mention because I got stuck with this at a live show. I had component out, the house had component in on their video mixer. Problem was I had RCA, and they had BNC. I only had one BNC adapter and no BNC cabling.
I would say that if you plan on doing pro level work, you buy 6 RCA <-> BNC connectors, and make the long runs with BNC. You can use the adapters if you need them, or leave them in your bag when you don't. BNC offers a much better solution if you should ever have to make some REALLY long runs, like at a concert, a large wedding, or anything similar.
Just a thought.
I see your point. Thanks for the insight.

Stevet,
Is SDI-out quality when playing back footage from the memory card better compared to component output or just a live video feed?

SDI out trumps component out every time. SDI has not gone through the codec, whereas component has. BIG difference.
