Randall_Oelerich thread inspired me to make a list.
For the past year or so I've found myself watching alot of weird movies and I want some more. I want to take advantage of my Netflix and really get some weird movies in my queue. I’ve already got some from reading a few threads on the boards.

I would appreciate any recommendations you guys may have, specifically some Indie films. I actually don't rent anything mainstream on Netflix... I figured I can always catch some Hollywood movies on cable... so help me with the list.

I don't mean, Bad Weird like story sucks, I'm talking about some good "Weird" movies... I'll start the list of some recent weird ones I've seen.

1. Irreversible
2. Perfume(The Story of a Murderer)
3. Donny Darko
4. I stand Alone

I find myself renting alot of Foreing films, it seems like they have some of the weirdest films, I don't mind subtitles.

Currently I have Teeth, Funny Games(US) in my queue.

Bride of Frankenstein is pretty far up on the weirdness scale. That reminds me, also get Andy Warhol's Frankenstein. It's got weird out the wazzoo.

Also, if you haven't seen it, Barbarella has some good weirdness about it.

Barberella wasn't really weird, as it was trippy. Galaxina was the better movie in my opinion.

The Loved One is very weird, and hilarious. James Coburn, Jonathon Winters, George C. Scott, Milton Berle, John Gielgud, Rod Steiger, Roddy Mcdowell, and Liberace. Now how can you beat a cast like that! Not to mention it is adapted by Terry Southern from an Evelyn Waugh novel.

"Cite des enfants perdus, La" or "The City of Lost Children"(US title). Also, "Delicatessen". They're both French, and both written and directed by Marc Caro & Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Both quite good, unique, and a decent bit surreal.

My favorite movie trailer of all time is the one for "The City of Lost Children", watch it HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNYG9cXTSds).

I also quite highly reccomend "Dark City". One of my favorites.

Wow! Some great recommendations, I'm gonna start checking some of these out. Alot of them I saw, like Pi... yeah that was a bit trippy... Usually I try to see what a director who’s done a strange movie… like what else he has done, usually I find more weird stuff.

Some great suggestions here, I’m surprise at myself being the film enthusiast that I am, haven’t seen a majority of these weird titles.

But I have seen these mentioned.

Being John Malkovich- Very weird
Adaptation- Weird and very enjoyable and unique
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind- Weird in a John Malkovich way
The Fountain- Again Darren Aronofsky, he likes to be wieird, I like him
Basket Case- LOL Classic
The Machinist- Yes, weird indeed, didn’t really get it though…

Un Chien Andalou is pretty weird. (of course I have to be the one to list this)
Begotten is a weird, experimental Super8 movie.
Gates of Heaven is a weird and offbeat documentary about pet cemeteries.

Also:

Mystery Train
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
George Washington

Yup, I'm gonna look into all the suggestions listed, who needs drugs when you have movies like these...lol

I'm gonna have to upgrade my Netflix account, didn't think I would get so many "Weird" reccomendations...

Oh yeah I'd also like to mention "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" that was pretty wierd, that movie had me seriously thinking I did Shrooms... I would say out of all the wierd movies I've seen, that was the weirdest one.

Can't wait to see if any of the listed ones tops it.

Wild Side - An investment banker (Anne Heche) buys a house with an ocean view she can't afford so she moonlights as a $1500 a night call girl who is forced by a federal agent to setup a guy who launders money (Christopher Walken) who used to be married to an Asian woman (Joan Chen), and even cuts and dyes his hair to look like hers, and gets her to help him launder money at the investment banker/call girl's bank by going there and pretending she has a shoe company and whose money laundering boyfriend later falls in love with the investment banker/call girl and asks said investment banker/call girl to seduce his wife and it gets weirder from there ....

Sister My Sister - true story about two sisters who worked as maids for some evil rich woman and her daughter. The sisters eventually started copulating with each other and then went crazy.

Sex Monster
The Haunting of Julia (good luck finding this though. I have it on VHS)

I agree with pretty much everything thats already been suggested. I'd just like to add a couple:

Battle Royale
Ichi the Killer

They arent "wierd" like a Cronenburg or something like Holy Mountain, they have more action, but the ideas and the characters in the two movies make them pretty F'd up.

Zardoz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zardoz) -- awesome 70's psychedelic sci-fi with Sean Connery. Directed by John Boorman. trailer on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbGVIdA3dx0)
El Topo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Topo) -- same guy who did The Holy Mountain.
Satyricon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satyricon_(film)) -- Fellini adaptation of the ancient Roman novel.
Roma (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYzRL9YIswQ) -- Fellini film about Rome. Best part is the Papal Fashion Parade.
Vampire Hunter D (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_Hunter_D) -- (anime) a far-future vampire sci-fi story.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdhG2fskXfE&feature=related): the sequel to Vampire Hunter D. Newer and with better animation.
Total Recall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liO8UK2K-p4&feature=related) -- I just watched this last night. One of Arnie's best films. Okay, this one is not really weird but has some weird and bizarre imagery.
Bad Taste (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Taste) -- Peter Jackson's first film. An awesomely hilarious splatterfest. You should buy it, but here is a link to the film on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxQrZzrc9Og) to whet your appetite.
We Are the Strange (http://www.wearethestrange.com/) -- crazy animated film taking place in a nightmare video game world.

Have to go with "Being John Malkovich", "Adaptation" and "Abre los ojos (IMDb - Open Your Eyes)" which is the film Vanilla Sky was adapted from. You know, even though it was mainstream Arnold Schwarzenegger did "Total Recall", "The Sixth Day" and "End of Days" which were all straight-forward but kind of weird.

I'd be remiss not to mention: "Identity", "The Usual Suspects" (of course) and "Frailty".

What about "Wild Things" with Matt Dillion and Denise Richards how many ways could that thing twist?

Weird movies are always worth the time spent watching them, even if they aren't necessarily good movies. I think that they help to open up a bridge that forms a stronger link from our conscious mind to our subconscious mind.

Weird is a wide-range definition, but I'll try...

Begotten (1991) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101420/) - an experimental splatter monochromatic silent movie

Persona (1966) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060827/) - Ingmaar Bergmans best one, according to many. Here's a first 01:15, I'd describe them as 'weird'. link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-zCzObR6d4&feature=related)

Check out other Bergmans film as well, The Seventh Seal etc.

Takashi Miike has really weird films. Fudoh, Ichi The Killer and Visitor Q are among the top. They're also very violent, but WEIRD.

And of course, the legendary Un Chien Andalou.

Wouldn't quite say too wierd, but Divorce Italian Style is very underrated.

Plot wise it's a bit of a dark comedy with very wierd values, but mainly I like how its style is a bit anachronistic...not something you'd expect to see, story and style wise, from a 60s film.

Yeah, Jan Svankmeyer made some weird but good stuff. I have a short film collection of his on DVD with some really great stuff. One of his that I couldn't handle was ALICE, which is a live action / stop-motion adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. The problem is the sound design. There is barely any dialogue, if any, and the whole film is grinding and crunching metal sounds that just F's up your brain. The film is somewhat weird but the experience is of watching it is weird and extremely unpleasant.

Finally saw some of the films recommended. That Holly Mountain I admit was pretty weird, but I was not prepared for Eraser Head, wow... that is on a whole other level of weirdness... I don't think I'll ever be the same after watching this.

It got me to wonder as I watch a few of these movies, I wonder while the Acting is going on, do some of the Actors think to themselves while performing the scenes or even afterwards, "What the hell is this director thinking" "Am I nutz for doing this stuff?" While watching these movies that's some of the things I kept on thinking about, like what are the actors thinking of during those very very weird scenes...LOL

Can't wait to watch the rest, but Eraser Head tops the level of weirdness in films, I've seen.

I also kept on thinking, while watching this movie if someone who didn't know me just happened to walk in on any of the scenes in the film, they would seriously think something was wrong...LOL

David Lynch is a SICK @#%!...

I also saw Mulholland Drive, and that was a bit on the Normal side for him I thought.

Can't wait to watch the rest, but Eraser Head tops the level of weirdness in films, I've seen.

Quote from Begotten trailer by some critic:

''Makes Eraserhead seem like Ernest saves Christmas.

Not that I agree with it fully, but Begotten is one of final level of weirdness I think.

I got Begotten coz many were talking about it. Now I don't think about Begotten like about film. It is looks like some bizzare home mage random shots.

I second: The Holy Mountain, Schitzopolis, and Naked Lunch.

Why don't you also try: Street Trash, Brain Damage (The Hennenlotter one)

I just saw Across The Universe and thoroughly enjoyed it. It starts off fairly tame, but takes a strong turn in the second half. If you like the Beatles music, it will definitely be a huge plus.

I finally saw everything on my list. And I now want to stay far away from weird movies for a very very very long time.... Don't know what I was thinking when I made this thread, I had no idea there was so much weird stuff out there. The good news is, I'm not in a mental home now.

You have access to The Holy Mountain, I had a PAL transfer to DVD, but it has since been misplaced, guess that coulda been a LossFest submission from me. Do you know where it's available along with any of Jodorowsky's other whacked out flicks? I know there's a couple that he disowned.

Isn't it a little harsh to blame the actor for the decisions of so many other faceless sinners? That's like blaming George Clooney for Batman & Robin, or Johnny Depp for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You should really blame the hacks that helmed the flicks.

Anything French Canadian - well the ones I've seen anyway.
LEOLO (1992) - is a prime example, loved it.

Also liked the following that have been suggested prior.

Gerry - more hynotic than wierd

American Movie - funny, no make that hilarious, doco on low budget filmmakers that have absolutley no idea. Features a gun toting Ted Nugent (70's rock star)

Bad Boy Bubby - One of my favourite Aussie movie's. I met the actor that played Bubby. He was judging at a film festival that our first ever film was screening at. We didn't win but made top10.

I'm too lazy to read 10 pages so I don't know if this has been listed...

"Street Trash" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Trash

Very weird, odd, funny, stupid, crazy, cult classic from the 80's.

Also from the 80's....

"The Video Dead" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Video_Dead

I miss the 80's!!!

I actually loved Vanilla Sky, though I admit the original "Open Your Eyes" acting was much better, but I didn't think Vanilla Sky was that far from the original, I loved it.

And yes, the 80's were the best!!!!

Penelope Cruz gets a pass since she was in both films. Everyone else gets the blame. Agreed.:)

Swedish Film - "You the Living"

Not overly weird but out there.
Deliberate slow going, so not for actionheads but great shot composition, not that I'm any expert.

It's worth finding if only for one hilarious vignette about a "table cloth trick".
