In my opinion most of the original ideas and cutting edge stuff originates from the US and parts of it especially the hard , repetitive stuff like rotoscope etc gets shipped over to India/China. Most of the creative control is always with the originators mostly US.

Another factor why US trumps others is purely economics. $ is way stronger then other eastern currencies. Amount of money invested in a single Apple Ad on TV would be more then many full featured films in the east.

so in short USA.

Ya - but I mean, Italians are good at soccer, Kenyans at running.

My question was, is there any country that does exceptionally good AE work?
I'm looking to find freelancers that are NOT in the USA. Thats my question between the lines.

if you looking for freelancers outside the US, India is a good bet. I am originally from there and every time I go there I see tons of small institutes offering training in AE, Maya, 3DMax etc.
A southern city called Chennai is good for post work. ofcourse Mumbai (formally Bombay) is another good place.

you can probably check monster India for some freelancers.

Really? That's interesting! What are some of the good post houses there?

My family is originally from India, too (specifically Chennai), and I'd like to check out some Indian film places (kollywood, etc.) next time I go over, to see what they're like.

there are quite a few post prod houses in Chennai just search for multimedia houses in chennai on google but here is the thing as i said before you get what you pay for. its cheap compared to US but if you are really looking for high quality work you will have to pay for it and in the that sense it will work out to all most the same cost as US.

Its kinda interesting that quality of work in multimedia is directly proportional to the amount of time spent. A "bee movie" or "toy story" takes over 3 years and over 200 million to make. If you try to make the same movie in say Chennai for say 1/1000 of the cost it will never look the same.

cheers

Generalizations about countries in this respect is juvenile, IMO. No offense to anyone, but a lot of the top talent right here in the US are from all over the world.

Regarding India, only the biggest jobs are farmed out over there for post work like roto, cleanup, etc. These jobs probably only represent a small percentage of the overall market. Many of the top spots are done completely in-house . Movies are a different story, but that's exponentially larger in terms of time and material to work with.

I find it strange that nobody is mentioning Canada...besides ILM, many of the effects these days are coming out of Montreal and Toronto. Hell, at Skycron we're getting more work from Los Angeles than Canada right now.

Not to mention Alias, Side Effects, and Discreet are all Canadian-based companies.

Also Softimage, makers of XSi.

I've heard that people from Liechenstein are the best at After Effects in the world.

All kidding aside there really is no answer to that.

The more first world a country you live in the more likely you are to afford expensive computer hardware and software, be educated in something frivolous like motion graphics, and be exposed to media to inspire you. You will probably find a direct relation to population and wealth and output of motion graphics and animation. I can't imagine too many Sudanese refugees getting access to a computer and AE, let alone ever seeing much in the way of television to give him ideas. I imagine a large number of relatively poor Americans or Europeans still have easy access to television and computers.
