View Full Version : The inside scoop on the HPX170

I have had multiple DVXUSERS ask what the HPX170 looks like on the inside. So I took one apart today for you guys. Don't worry. I was under the supervision of our Authorized Service Center. :)

One thing that I noticed is that almost the entire camera is metal. The plastic parts just have less plastic in them, the metal parts seems to be slimed down also to get the weight down some, but over all, it still has the same build quality as the HVX200.

There is a lot of shielding everywhere so we don't have to worry much about interference which is good.

The lens is much smaller now too. Now that we are at 72mm, the lens weight is greatly reduced, and we still have a rockin' picture coming out of it.

It just feels REALLY weird opening up a camera and finding no tape mechanism. All you see is a bunch of circuit boards, and a lens all screwed together to make one piece of awesome. :)

Enjoy everyone! Throw any questions that you may have my way.

Andrew, what is your take on the side to side movement of the HPX lens?

Any ideas of what the culprit is?

Andrew, I spoke to you last week and you said that you were going to do a side by side comparison of the HPX170 and HMC150. Have you had a chance to do that yet, and if so, what were the results? Thanks.

Throw any questions that you may have my way.

Are all the pieces that you removed from the outer shell made out of metal?

Nice!

You inspired me to take apart my own HPX170. It's amazing in there. But when I put it back together, I had a few pieces leftover. No worries, I'll just toss 'em! :D

Yea, who needs the rubber band that you wind up to make it all run. :)

Where exactly is the 'shock mount' on the lens?

There are some foam pads and some natural play in the plastic of the lens. Nothing really special and it doesn't have to be. The shock-mount looks like it is "shock-mounting" as designed.

Everyone has wondered for a VERY long time what this mysterious "clunk" is. When I took the camera apart, it was obvious. This is what I found.

Any ideas of what the culprit is?

In another post, Jan stated that the "culprit" is the shock-mount design in the lens.

This is in fact what we are seeing. It may be a bit over-zealous, but non the less, a lens play to decrease damage to the lens in case of unexpected (or expected)...well...shock. :)

We are looking into something for this. We'll keep you posted tomorrow.

The dark peice on the top that has the 3CCD badge on it is plastic but is fits right against metal. The back of the LCD and the bottom plate are plastic too. Same as the HVX200. I was very suprised that Panasonic got this camera so light and almost the entire thing is metal.

Very impressed I am. (said like yoda) ;)
