View Full Version : My recent woes with capturing and what I've learned

So... Yesterday I shot some footage with this band. Video is here if anybody is interested:
http://www.vimeo.com/1894517
But anyway.. after they finished playing the song, I stopped recording about 5 seconds afterwards. Later I went to import the footage via Pro Res 422 on fcp 6.0.4 and then began the battle.
Apparently... When transfering the clips.. my clips all got the last 10 seconds of them or so cut off. Therefore the song was missing the last 3 seconds or so of it.. which ruined the entire thing. I went through a ridiculous battle trying to import the end piece and eventually got a fragment of it which I attached into the beginning part.
I don't know if anybody else has been experiencing this or will come across this or if it's just me.. but make sure to have a lot of excess footage on the end of clips before you hit stop.

is the footage there on the card? If so, this is a bug with the capture software, right? How about using one of the alternate conversion tools like Toast or something?

Everything is on the card.. I'm assuming it must be a bug with final cut's capture software. Let me give toast a try. Toast has no loss in qualit?

Toast 9 should transcode to whatever codecs you have on your system. should deliver the same results as quicktime.

I've just used toast 9 to capture the avchd footage into final cut pro. Quality is exactly the same, and everything is perfect now. It captured the entire clip and it's a VERY easy program to work with.
THANKS GUYS =D COULDN'T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YAH DVXUSER!

How do you use toast 9 for capture?

well its not really "capturing", its transcoding. toast can be used as a file conversion tool, so thats basically all you do. convert the PRIVATE folder contents to quicktimes.

When you use Toast 9 is it using ProRes 422?

If the Pro Res codec is on your system you should be able to transcode to it thru Toast.

Yes it does transcode into ProRes 422 (HQ) if that codec is on your system and you select that codec for your target file. That is, you have the choice between all codecs installed on your system!
And Toast9 does SCALE DOWN to SD if you set the size of the target file, say, to 720x576 if you are in PAL territory. The scaling is outstanding. Equal to what MPEGStreamClip can achieve.

This is actually a pretty amazing program. Super easy to transcode the clips. Although one problem I see is that I can't set "ins" and "outs" Got to take the entire clip.

I had the same problem with 60p footage in FCP log & transfer Thomas.

I don't think the current transfer device in fcp is very good =X Have to wait for fcp 7 probably *sigh*

Toast will transcode to any available codec on your Mac.
In this sense it is more versatile than FCP, which limits AVCHD transcodes to prores, and in some instances AIC.

What is the best workflow to output SD DVD on Mac? Transcode in Toast 9 to ProRes 422, ProRes 422HQ or DVC Pro? Edit in HD then drag finished edit to Compressor to output as SD? Is is better to transcode and resize to SD imeediately in Toast 9, then edit in SD?

it will transcode to any quicktime codec you have on your machine, so if you have fcp 6.0.4, then yes you can go to Pr422.

There is a very detailed White Paper about ProRes 422.
