Just think about how well it would have done with Kirk Cameron added to the cast...

Speaking of which Fireproof made another $4,069,000 this week and still in the top ten. So far this is about $12,491,000 for the little film shot shot by a church based film company on a $500,000 budget and shown only on about 852 screens. 13 more screens have just been added. But Chihuahua's are cute.

That foot is going deep into Hollywood's buttocks on this one ain't it. I love it. I hope they take some of the money and be sure to advertise a bit more.

I believe movies like this have a target audience and some sort of computer expertise behind them. Its the spoof like Disaster Movie that makes me cringe, thank god it tanked at the BO .

As a matter of fact their was an internet campaign to push people not to see Disaster Movie.

I read the title of this thread and said to myself... that's 'cause it's the end of the world.
Then open the thread and voila'.
I don't know how much more stupid I can take... also... PEOPLE ON A FILM FORUM will come down hard on any film that has an overtly goofball premise... kid film or not.
We don't age discriminate around here.

Sheesh. A bunch of grown ups coming down hard on a kid film. What's that about?

I took a 9 year old to see it today. I would call the movie mildly cute at best, but she absolutely loved it and that's all that mattered to me.

Kids are still alive and well and know what they want. Talking animals have been popular with kids all throughout time. Books, films, radio, television. Disney built an empire on talking animals.

Good point.
I guess I should consider myself lucky that when I was a kid there were enough movies that used clever concepts and writing, instead of gimmicks. (I'd have thought this was dumb back then too.)
Babe was original and they've milked the utters OFF that cow ever since.

While I would like more good films to take my grandchild to, it's good to have some to take them to.

I'm sure at 5 years old you would have seen right through the talking dog thing. Kids don't believe it, but they find it amusing. :)
Shaggy Dog (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053271/) anyone?

There wasn't anything scary or overtly sexual about it. So, yeah, I think a 5 year old would enjoy it. In fact there were several 'younger' kids there and they laughed and seemed to be having fun with it. Plenty of one-liners for adults to enjoy, as well.

I don't think it's a bunch of grown-ups coming down on a kid's film... I think it's a few film enthusiasts coming down on what looks like an cheesy re-hash of a re-hash, packaged in a stupid idea.
Perhaps this thread should have been under film discussions... and not cafe.
Either way... it's only an opinion about a movie, and to perceive this as adults against kids gives the thread more weight then I'm sure was intended... Better to point out that maybe the market wants more family friendly material... or to say "it's a kid's movie... what do you expect?"... instead of making it sound like child [film] abuse.
If the same thread was started about Space Monkeys, the "space flies" thing, or that Star Wars cartoon... again, based on the perception that it was a poor concept, that amazingly enough, did well... is that still in bad taste?

Dude when you were a kid I believe the "Muppets take Manhattan" was all the rage. But a talking dog, that's far fetched. I'm simply putting things in perspective. Like when my friend started going on about the logic holes in Freddy versus Jason = the logic holes in a movie about a man who goes after people in their dreams fighting an immortal killer Zombie. LOL, don't mean to make the thread become heated.

Sorry dude... I didn't mean to sound hostile about it... it's just that lately I've been feeling like a guy can say what he wants around here... just so long as it doesn't go against the flow in any way. I'm not talking about justifying "trouble-making"... but I felt like the OP (and myself) were both taking some weird heat for making a joke about current pop culture.

LOL. Yea, I think a lot of steam has been blown off in the forums over the past week. I myself have participated in some heated but good discussions. Between the Spike Lee thread and the Fireproof thread I feel like a load off my shoulders. Personally I didn't even expect to see the film mentioned here, but then again I don't know why with this being a film forum. I all but ignored it. It's such a blow off flick if you don't have kids. But Disaster Movie, had that been #1 I don't know - time to slit my wrist with a #2 pencil.

We took our kids to see it when it was raining last weekend. A lost dog movie in the trademark Disney fashion. The kids really liked it - lots of laughing throughout. It's a movie.
I'll tell you that we also took our youngest to see Igor, which is a dark, unhappy picture that looks and sounds just like a Tim Burton outing - with all the life sucked out of it. If I'd known how unfortunate this film is in advance, I'd have gone to see Chihuahua twice instead.
With kids, the choices for films are usually very narrow. Sometimes we get pictures that entertain kids and speak to adults at a different level. Pixar does this on each and every outing.
The dog movie was a popcorn outing and I hope they make their money back. With an advertised budget of $50M, they should get close enough on domestic alone.

Hi,
With kids, the choices for films are usually very narrow.Spot on Erik.
Like I said, I'd like to take my grandchildren to the Next Best Thing, but those are pretty rare. That age group is a forgotten market, and I think that's unfortunate for both the audience and producers' pocketbooks.
The children get fed a lot of drivel because that's what's there, but no one seems willing to do anymore about it other than complain about it.
Ahem...

I would suggest the National Treasure films. They're PG action adventure films which haven't been seen for years. You may want to check those out.

Whenever I see a films like this, I always say " Now there's a great salesman " .
I've always thought about shooting a little hidden cam doc. on the things these guys say in hollywood to pitch a film.
I was going to call it "The Mouth Of Gold" :)

I don't get why when films which aren't to someone's taste do well, it has to be some sign of societal collapse. Especially a movie like this one, of a type which has done well pretty much since Hollywood began. What else are you supposed to take kids to see? Or do you think that kids' movies just shouldn't be made?
(I'm FAR more worried that torture fetish films like "Hostel" and "Saw" do well. Speaking of gratuitousness . . .)
