A lot of people think what i'm about to do is really stupid. But some smart people I know say it's a good move. But I'm currently testing the waters of self-distribution to see if I can monetize my short film "I F*cking Hate You" by giving it away for FREE on YouTube. I have sponsorship thru OurStage that donates $4 to me for each account sign-up.

So if you have a blog, I invite you to embed that link to IFHY in a post on your blog.
If it's successful, the dvxuser community could become the staging ground for us to support each others films thru an "embed and spread" model with sponsorship. i'm perfectly willing to be the guinea pig for this experiment.
here's the official dollar amount counter... http://s1.ourstage.com/images/affiliates/aff-zakforsman.jpg ... it updates 10 minutes after a sign-up.

Signed up, but I don't have a blog or anything.
Sounds like a good idea, but those who market their film this way first are going to be seeing the most profit by far.

Absolutely Drew. Once we're all signed up it looks like there would be no way for us to make money (at least not as much). Still a cool idea for those who can get on it early.

that's what i was wondering. how are they able to give you $4 per person on top of the free music downloads they give to subscribers? where is their revenue coming from?

OurStage is owned by AOL. and in their infinite wisdom, they have determined that one subscriber is worth $4 to them. my deal has a cap at $10,000.
the documentary 10MPH is also working with them at $1 per sign-up... www.10mph.com clearly, they do not have the same cap.

Alot of subscription-based web sites do this. The next person could make a deal with Spout.com or Last.fm for sponsorship. I don't think there's any worry about running out of places that will pay for subscribers.

Signed up, cuz I love your short. I'm not sure what OnStage has to do with filmmaking either. Anyhow...

" Thanks for signing on OurStage to show your support for independent music and film. Four dollars has been given to your filmmaker!"
Good luck with it all Zac.

nothing. other than they provide filmmakers with a revenue stream. as do a number of web sites seeking to build their membership.
