I'm considering the EX1....it just seems like DVCPRO HD is such a superior codec, with its IFRAME compression and data rate. Sure the ex1 can more efficiently fit more 1080p footage into those cards, but.idk...long gop? It just seems like such a step back for such a nice camera. Considering i'm doing lots of handheld and whip pans with sports and such, I probably shouldnt consider the EX should I? And I really am suprised how good the footage looks coming out of the HPX, and no i'm not talking resolution, I'm talking low noise, fluid movement, NO artifacts, ect

DVCPROHD obviously has a higher bitrate and interframe compression going for it, but in this day and age that doesn't necessarily mean better footage. Long gop was an issue back when people were editing on slower computers that couldn't handle it, and NLE's weren't built for it. Nowadays, it runs perfectly fine and I've never run into any problems, it cuts, grades, and renders excellently. As for the bitrate, people have panned extremely quick, and pushed the codec as far as it can go and I still haven't seen any compression artifacts.
And now after a couple awesome people figured out you can shoot with the ex1 and record right to $65 16GB SD cards, it's pretty tempting over the hvx/hpx
If you'd like, I could shoot a couple things (whatever you'd like me to) and upload the raw files right off the card so you could drop them into your NLE and get a feel for it and see if it's for you

Sure, just let me know what you'd like shot. try to keep it short as the files are obviously huge

I shot marlins thrashing around in back of rolling boats in the open ocean and had no problems.
In fact when I tried the EX1 the first time I deliberately shot water flowing into a pond to see what might happen. No problems. And I haven't had a single artifact show up in all the shooting I've done since March.
That includes water crashing onto rocks, lures being tossed into the turbulent wake behind charter boats and fish being deep fried (yes, we have a cooking segment, too!).:)

How are artifacts created? I mean, is it the random motion overloading the codec because it's too much info for the bitstream to handle?

Just a heads up... If you've seen I, Filmmaker, Daniel S. Williams, and Danielsnotadrummer around on the boards the last few days...
All are the same person. This person has been trolling and talking to himself as multiple users on the boards.
Best to ignore him and anyone like him :)

Thanks Jason. That's funny, I immediately thought that.
The funny thing is...
His info lists he owns the HPX170 which is an excellent camera. Why bother with trolling.
Why not go out and shoot some awesome footage with the HPX. The camera produces one heck of an image!
