I've been trying to look for a thread about this but cant seem to find one. I need help on preserving the transparency after I export into FCP. I did some animations with text and pictures that has a transparent background - this is to serve as an animation transition in FCP. I tried it but it doesn't work. Even when I played around the composite modes. What am I doing wrong?

I would imagine that you need to include an alpha channel to indicate the transparent regions of the frames. I've not done this, so I don't know if that is correct, or what the options are to generate an alpha channel for whatever output from AE to FCP.

I tend to take edited live action video sequences out of FC and import into AE, rather than generate graphics in AE, then import them into FC...

Render out as a quicktime with animation codec
Set it to 'millions of colors+'
and then set 'include alpha channel'

The other option is you can also export it as a premultiplied which will have transparency 'built in'

Hey, thanks for the help. One question though. Where can I find the set 'include alpha channel' option? should it be in the render cue window?

How do I set it to premultiplied?

Sorry, Im just new to after effects and Im taking it step by step. I appreciate all your help! thanks!

Its in the Render Que I think that is how you spell it. Compostion->Add to render que-> One of the four options I think it is the one that says lossless.

Do it in this order.

1) open the render queue window . . .

2) in that window click on the "Output module".

3) click the 'format options' button and set the colours to 'millions of colors +' (make sure you choose a 'compression type' in that window that supports alpha channels/millions of colors + like 'PNG' or 'Animation')

Then back in the Output module" settings panel you can select various alpha channel options. Premultiplied is the better option here rather than 'Straight' (experiment to see why).

Good luck.
