Can you just plug the camera in and have FCP recognize it via Log & Transfer window, and then bring in all the clips that way? Like working with P2 cards on the HVX?
If so, how does it bring the footage in (ie how/what does it rewrap or transcode it to?)

Yes you can. I've actually copied the PRIVATE folder to the HDD and down it that way.
You transcode to prores.

You take the card out, put it in the card reader, then put it in your computer. Bring up the log and transfer window and it will recognize the card and start adding clips for you to view. Choose which ones you want to transfer to your project and it will begin transcoding them.

I'm getting an error when I try to drag shrigg's PRIVATE fold into FCP log and transfer. I'm using 6.0.4, I'm sure of it. I've tried many other different ways to import the mts files too. I've tried just the stream folder, the whole thing, etc.. What's going on? Thanks!!!

Do you have Perian installed?
Have you tried transcoding in Toast 9?
And have you used footage you actually shot with the HMC?
Because some downloads do not seem to work from the internet.

Yes I do.
Have you tried transcoding in Toast 9?
Yep, it works, but an FCP only workflow is what i'm after.
And have you used footage you actually shot with the HMC?
No I haven't. I don't own the camera yet.

Shriggs footage was just a straight copy off the card. The folder structure was left intact. I don't see why it wouldn't want to work.
Thanks for the help.

Uninstall Perian.
I also had intact file structures from other downloads. Some worked and others didn't.
Then try this short download and see if it works:

Thomas Lew's method works great with FCP on Macbook Pro, I just stuck the card in a card reader, opened Log&Transfer, and within a minute the clips were available for review and import into FCP, you can even mark in and out points on the card files and import just the sections of clips you want, and, the clips will remain marked when you put the card back in later. The import is pretty fast too, some of the clips were almost instantly transcoded and others took longer but never more than about 50% of the original record time. Hope this helps.

It does work nicely, no need to uninstall Perian. Used FCP 6.0.4 to Log&Transcode.
Drag one clip to your timeline and it will adjust automatically. Prores 422 is absolutely sufficient. Enjoy.
Funny thing: Just out of curiosity, tried to Log&Transcode with Final Cut Express 4.0.1 as well which
transcodes the clips into Apple Intermediate Codec.
The clips transcoded with FCE were about 35% larger (AIC, datarate 23.2 MBps) then those transcoded with
FCP (ProRes422, datarate 17.1 MBps).
FCE transcoded clips did work in FCP flawlessly, but not vice versa.
