Apparently... I'm one of the only ones with an hmc150. Does that make me a tool? Only time will tell!! But for now.. if anybody wants to request any kind of test footage in whatever format etc... make a reply here and I'll try and get that footage posted within a day or two.

Also.. I'm using final cut pro 6.0.4 with pro res 422 to work with the footage.

Test Footage Done so far:

have you had any issues that others were having in regards to transcoding footage with apple's work flow?

no issues whatsoever..

make sure you format the sdhc card in the camera before you use it though. Then you plug it in and transfer it via the log and transfer. It's as simple as 123. I think the problems start occurring if you have a non intel based mac and/or an earlier version of final cut

I'd like to see a few things if you don't mind.

1. How it handles branches and leaves moving in the wind.

2. Really fast shutter stuff of cars driving or people running, etc.

3. Some 60p footage converted to slow-motion.

4. Some high contrast type lighting with some in between "murky" shaded areas. This is where the HVX really sucks and the noise appears.

5. Bright red objects to see if there's noise and jaggies and such in the red...

6. Halle Berry naked?

+1!!!

If you do this could you try out a couple different shutters? Maybe 1/500th? I think shrigg's test footage was done with like 1/1000 or 1/2000th. I though it looked a bit choppy when slowed down.

thanks man! You've been a great help so far!

Thomas

How long does the pro res conversion take?

For a 1 minute clip I'd say it takes about 40 seconds or so. You can also set ins and outs on the clips so you don't exactly have to transfer everything. It's easy too.. you can set it and forget it, then come back later

Hi Thomas. Thanks for your willingness to share your experience with the HMC150. I am trying to decide between the Canon XH A1 and the Panasonic HMC150 and have some questions I hope you can answer for me:

How did you do the rack focus in your Vimeo DOF video? The A1 has a nice feature where you can set a focus point, change the focus, and push a button to return to the set focus point. This makes rack focus easy, but it looks like you were able to do similar with the HMC150.
Is the image quality what you expected? It is hard to judge IQ on the Vimeo clips. I've seen some compaints elsewhere that the HMC150 footage is a little soft. This may have been with prerelease units. What do you think?
Does the HMC150 have a lanc input jack? It would be nice to be able to control zoom and focus from a remote on the tripod arm.
Thanks again,

Jerry

There are focus numbers pretty clearly visible on the lcd so I found the focus number for one.. focused to the other distance then switched between them. Was very easy.

Honestly I had no idea what to expect with the image quality but I am in love with it. I hooked up my camera to a 1080i tv and the picture quality is unbelievable. Very vivid colors. I heard the xh-a1 has a hard time in low light. The hmc150 performs extremely well in low light. Very little grain if at all even at midnight (I posted a test clip of that).

As far as the input jack I do not know.. perhaps you can google it. I don't know what it looks like.

I would DEFINITELY recommend the hmc150 over the xh-a1. I'm pretty sure you'll be satisfied.

Videomaker... yes, the HMC150 has a remote input, and is supposed to use the same interface as the DVX100 and HVX200, so it will accept remotes made for them. Note that it is not compatible with Sony and Canon remotes.

Thomas, glad to hear about your excellent image quality.

I'm a bit unclear about how you did the rack focus, except that from your clip it seemed to work well. Are you saying you did something like this:
Manually focus on a near object and note the focal distance (say for example, 5 ft) as displayed on the lcd.
Manually focus on infinity.
Start shooting.
Using the focus ring, accomplish the rack focus by changing from infinity focus to 5 ft by watching the readout on the lcd.
If I am misunderstanding what you did please correct me. Something like what I described above would certainly work for me if the focus ring is precise. Currently I am using a Canon GL2 and the focus ring uses a servo to adjust focus and it is not very precise.

The focus ring on the HMC150 is completely repeatable and totally precise. It is approximately 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 times better than the focus ring on a GL2.

^ What he said.

I've used a gl2 before this is nothing like that. Sorry if my original explanation wasn't very clear. You understood correctly what I was saying.

Check the Vimeo group I've put up several cinelike D tests it looks great but the master ped is crazy, it goes to -100!

Thomas - Cinelike D is the default Scene File 6 on the thumbwheel. Adds a cinematic oversaturation and a little filmlike grain, etc. Also if you click on Scene File in the Menu, you can adjust all kinds of settings for each Scene File, rename them, etc. Have fun! You have to save the settings in the Scene File before you turn the cam off if you want to keep any changes.

Thanks for the time and effort to help us all out Thomas.
Alex Horner(DM_rider) got this footage (http://vimeo.com/1872951) out of the HPX170 with the following tweaks.
I was wondering if you could put up some sunset-ish footy with the same adjustments.
If it's possible to get pretty identical visuals then I'll be pretty sold on the HMC150.
Again, thanks for everything you've posted so far. It's be extremely helpful.

Thomas - please, please, please take some 6mbps footage! If possible, also with a 1/30th shutter.

Ideally, footage of a crowd of people or something similar.

Thanks!

Boo interlaced =[

I can do it tomorrow perhaps if I find some time.. (lots of stuff going on this week) but I don't see a point in shooting the lowest quality with interlaced.
