Accidentally put this in technical also.....

Hey all,
Just thought I would throw up a quick and dirty early 170 comparison. My buddy Gregger Jones from Abel Cine Tech and I were on our way home from a shoot and had all three small p2 cams on hand, so we set up a quick and dirty sequential comparison. Scene file settings were the same, though we couldn't get the 170 to take em from the sd card that originated in a 200. We went through all the menus quick to make em same. We lacked a proper white balance card also. Any case, here's a quckie, we may try to get another test together this week. 170 and 200a look similar but darker, interestingly.....

thanks for that ethan.

Cool test, but with that resolution and compression it really doesn't show off the differences. If anything it makes the hpx170 look even noisier than the hvx200, which we know isn't the case. ( looking at green curtain. )

Maybe a few high rez stills?

yeah it does seem darker and noisier.

Or upload to vimeo? Just a suggestion. I know Vimeo will compress it further using Flash but there, we can at least see it in HD. It looks as though the file is small enough to just upload the raw files and then Vimeo users can download the raw files to see what it looks like in hi res.

What do you think? There is also a group for HPX170 folks.

yeah, i dont know what were supposed to see here. the framing is all different and the available light isnt dark enough to bring out grain anyway...

yea it's really tiny or maybe our screen sizes are too big, but yea you aren't able to see the difference.

Guys thank you for the advice. Especially putting it up on Vimeo. Really it was 3:00am in the morning and we had just got back from shooting Jazz musicians with 3 JVC's:) I think we could have done a better job with the shoot out had we spent more time but it was too irresistible with all 3 puppies just sitting there. We can probably get them all back together if anyone has anything particular they would like to see.

No big deal on what you shot. At least you were able to put something up. Everyone's busy.

Honestly I'd love to see how the 170 does in the setting you mentioned that you just shot. Live theater, concert, low-light performances is what I've been shooting a lot of lately and would love to see how the 170 performs in those situations compared with a HVX200 or whatever HD cam you have around.

Thanks for posting your footage!

Crazy how busy it is out there. I can barely get lunch in at Abel! I got a side project going where the script takes place in the course of a night. I may take the 170 out and see what I get in the streets of NY.
