that looks like one fantastic camera. Very curious to see how the enhanced dynamic range function works.

apparently its not available in 24p? That is a shame if not.

I am reluctant to purchase this camera right away. Not sure if i should perhaps wait to see what the scarlet has in store. ( not a scarlet versus 170 reply, just uncertain of future purchase )

I hope to make enough cash to pick up scarlet too!

The footage i posted above is all stock settings and no CC in post, just captured, cut and uploaded.

pretty damn nice for stock settings.

care to post some more cinematic stuff? Perhaps lower exposure with some curve adjustment and the biggest dynamic range in camera possible? :)

absolutely but just not right now. I'm doing some data migration to free up storage space on the mac.

PaPa you do know the scarlet has been scrapped, and they starting completely over on redesign? so it's gonna take a long time before you see something in that direction.

I think if you need a new camera, get the 170, if you don't use what you got.

(in SA we have to wait another 6 weeks!!, and NTSC/PAL can still not be verified for us on the HPX-174)

it is being redesigned yes, but as they say it will still be released around the same time.

YEs.. and they've been so highly reliable on those dates.. Ohh wait, they do what they want and admittedly tell people that things will, do, and are going to change. There's no accountability and they aren't beholden to anybody or anytime frame. Being mavericks they do what they want.. and tha'ts good.. but I don't think you'll see this camera shipping before this time next year... or probably more like xmas 09 or so.

Why not have a cam.. make money for a year and then go on. I never see the sense in waiting for a cam, unless you have something that's doing what you need now. Make that bread and then move on later

i do own a cam, canon xh a1 with letus extreme. relax please

The reason i am hesitant to make any upgraderight now is, seeing that i will be bound to using 35mm adapters until full sized 35mm sensors become somewhat common in the 5-10 thousand dollar range, i will need to suck in as much light as possible, meaning the larger the CCD or cmos sensor, the more light i will keep and the less i have to worry about light loss from the adapters and such.

Now, if the hpx was a 2/3rd inch sensor, that would be great :)

that footage looks pretty crisp. where in nj are you located?
papa you should just go with a used canon zr-40, its really good in low light. it has that night vision setting where everything turns green and lags. it would work good with your letus probably

The HPX500 is 2/3" and it is GREAT. DOF for days and no need to throw up 10,000 watts of light to get it....

but the 500 is a shoulder camera... if the hpx-170 was a 2/3 it would be awesome
the 500 is great though obviously

My best bet would be to see the Scarlet out in early 2010. Right after Christmas. You know Red, they aren't extremely reliable. Not to knock them, they make amazing cameras. But sd he said, they are mavericks, they do what they want when they want. I'm sure it'll be a revolutionary cam tho
