I see quite a few people are editing D90 footage on PPro. I am getting a unsupported compression error when trying to import. Of course VLC and Quicktime will play the files and if I convert the .avi files to .mov they will load. The time ad effort to re-encode 100 or even ten files through quicktime should not have to happen. Is there any way around this so I can get to editing?

Do you mean unsupported codec? This was happening to me as well when trying to import some clips into Premiere CS3 in XP, however today I imported some 25 clips which I shot last night and they all imported without error...Strange.

Scott as far as I understand the Nikon shots m-jpeg with a .mov extension. So why are you having to convert them from avi to mov in OSX?

Roxics,
The error I get is "unsupported compression in file". This could be just the verbage PPro uses in OS X?!...
Andrew,
The clips my D90 outputs have a .avi extension. I have used QT Pro to convert/transcode to .mov. These work with no problems, but I am trying to avoid this step. I am guessing the file is not in spec somehow, but Motion Jpeg is a legacy codec right?
Rwenaming the files with .MPG as sugested on an old Adobe help file did not work.

(Think you have the names backwards there, Scott.)

It didn't work for me until I downloaded and installed the MJPEG codec from these folks:

Do the trial first, then see if you want to buy it for $10.

Is there an MJPEG codec for OS X? If so, where? I've been hunting for it with know luck.
Does OS X use other installed codecs from other vendors? I am not sure that PPro works the same on OS X then Windows. I have a home built DVR at home running XP and I've had to at one time or another download or purchase codecs for proper playback. I have never had the same experience on OS X. It seems that many files types are dependent on differnet programs. VLC, QT, Real, flip4mac, etc...
Thanks,
Scott

Scott I don't know if this would help you or not, but I guess it's worth a try.

This really helped me in Premiere Pro CS3. I can scrub perfectly. The red bar is still there but it didn't seem to matter at all. I even added come CC and it ran smoove like butter. The render time for preview is ugly, but it didn't seem to matter because everything was real time. The output time was fine. Give this a shot. I really liked it.

These codecs do not seem to be for OS X. Any other ideas? I cannot be the only one running Leopard... I guess sometimes it Windows that just works.

Yeah, these are for XP...have you tried Adobe's website?
Might have something there.

On a related note, but under XP, I had to convert my D90 footage to 23.976 to get it to play well in PPro with my HV20 (cineform pulldown) footage. Perhaps there is some option to turn off the funky frame blending it tried to retime the D90 mjpeg footage with, but gods was that aweful looking!
Of course the converted D90 footage was off very slightly for sound sync, but it wasn't an issue in my project. I just sync'd a D90 clip to the center of the part(s) I wanted to use in multicam and I was a frame(ish) off one way or the other and really couldn't tell even when looking for it.
