i don't care about vincent canon dude. don't want to talk to him.
it has retiming and stabilization. like using gyro wasn't good enough for them...
but i've got the video. if you check canon's webpage html source there's the direct link to Reverie_Final_Cut2_midres.m4v. get it. maybe they'll remove it like they did with the 5dmk2 samples on Canon-Korea website. you never know

Your analyzing footage that has been edited and then compressed and not the original camera files, footage stabilizing, sky replacement, CC and re timing are common post practice, whats your point sir?
The case about "jello" artifacts, can you please show me in any two frames, where pixel compression or pixel stretching has occured in the Y axis (Which is visually overt), thus far I haven't seen any yet.
Anhar,
i didn't say it's sky replacement
i said the jello makes things look fake. that's all
editing video doesn't add hotpixels, banding noise and so on. that's what we're looking for

What hotpixel? I see nothing..
i did try to stabilize cmos footage from hv20. what happens is that the tracker detects movement when the rolling occurs even if you can't see rolling at first. it fixes overall the image but the parts affected by rolling become blurred but stay almost in the same place. they don't jello no more like waves.
if we assume they didn't lie about post stabilization and just used gyro when the cmos picks any tiny movement the image becomes a blur for a few frames.
next there are hotpixels and visible banding in resized video. that is not good.
next the blurry blended interframes present only on some sequences. i don't know about that. it looks like cheap retiming to me. but maybe they just put the wrong workspace.
if anyone sees other problems or potential problems please post
we're just testing the statement that 5dmk2 is better than Red and $100k cameras. that's all.
canon didn't put a simple test so we can enjoy the video, nooo.... they say 5d is the best video camera at any price. this is marketing without any video knowledge and that sucks. it's like nikon saying d90 doesn't jello when everybody can see it jello.

Kind of silly of you to take the word of one man so seriously. Okay, have fun with your testing. I think most people who knows of RED and who get excited about the 5D2 knows that 5D2 is not a replacement for Red One. However, I would belief that it has superior low light / high ISO than Red One.

For us videophiles... every little detail is extremely important and has to be perfect (or near perfect). The viewer and audience out in tv/movie land don't ever notice the small imperfections if the story, lighting, cam op., directing, acting, etc... are good. But once one part of the equation looks or seems like it is crap (really bad lighting and/or acting, etc...) then your audience will more than likely pick up on it.
There are definitely problems with the Canon and Nikon still photography cameras (5D MKII) that so happens to have video integrated, but it is indeed a step in a good direction. It truly amazes me to see people get so nit picky over a camera that performs moderately well, when feature films shot on palmcorders are still getting distributed direct to DVD as we speak.
I truly have no real opinion as to whether the canon or nikon still camera shoots better video... but I do know that things are moving in an interesting direction and I can't wait to see more people shooting REAL stuff on these cameras to see some real results.
I'm done ranting on theories and balogna... sorry.

I'm sorry but I'm still not convinced, I have yet to see EXACT frames CLEARLY showing any forms of "jello".
Are you even sure of what you are referring to you when you refer to "jello"?
Is there color banding (perhaps, I didn't take a close look) however your looking at a web compressed file and not the original file.

For Gods sake! The best way to criticise this camera is to go out, buy one, test it yourself and make the final conclusions from your own work. The same way a lot of us did with the D90. Laforet's footage looks amazing. And this guy is going to make a lot of money because the time and money he spent creating it. Thats right, he will be making lots of dough with this marketing gem. And great for him.
If you want to waste your time and money analizying it and making your own conclusions without been part of the working team behind the project then feel free to do it. It is your time and money. But are you going to get anything from doing this, well absolutely not. Canon will make millions of dollars from this camera as it works on perfecting the technology. That is a reality.

Yeah, I've been reading the thread over at Red. Jannard likes to talk about how they are putting pressure on the big boys, and in many ways I think they are, but it has been the big boys that have rearranged Red's game plan over the last couple of weeks no matter how he spins it.
I'm not sure if Red has the R&D resources to even start to compete with Canon's sensor technology. When Canon finally wakes up, decides to get off their butts and move, they can do some incredible things instead of slowly releasing incremental improvements to make a buck. I'd like to thank Red for their presence in the market. I think they finally woke up Canon.
The problem is: Canon is now awake.
People over there seem to be concerned that Scarlett will now be even more expensive. I will go on record that Scarlett will now have to come in at cheaper price point than projected and have more features than the 5D if they hope to have significant market penetration. That is what will put Canon on the run and gut their camcorder line.
Scarlett:
2,499.00-2,999.00
fully manual
variable frame rates
XLR audio inputs 24 bit, 44.1, 48 and 96K, phantom power, line level/mic level
Eos and Nikon mounts
Full Size Sensor/Just as low light sensitive as Canon
This is where Scarlett needs to be if they hope to get a jump on Nikon and Canon. But I don't think they will be able to pull the sensor off. We'll see. I'll buy it if they do.
For some reason, Jannard reminds me of John DeLorean. Remember the DeLorean DMC-12?

Remember the DeLorean DMC-12?Smart POV -- resumes the thing.

Not sure why one would obsess frame by frame over this video. The footage looks very good for Canon's first baby step into the DSLR hybrid market. I think this camera will do pretty well. If I were getting a new DSLR I would seriously consider this one.

lucky me. i WAS looking for a dslr. i was ready to pony up for the nikon, although i have many more canon lenses at my disposal. saw the jello and was willing to live with it. heard about the 5d and can't live without out it. not the best for video, but a damn good camera (especially a first serious one for me) and a great way to get used to shooting video. will what i shoot fall under the same scrutiny as vincent's - hopefully on a story/filmmaking level, not someone who's criticized hot pixels or questionable motion blur. if they even consider that, i've failed as a filmmaker. canon announced a DSLR i can afford. they had me at "video."

you think?
to me it's the jello that makes the moon move.
Let me look again.
But the cam was mounted on the car so it will move too.
The only moon movement that I thought was weird was the time lapse with herky jerkey near the end. It keep changing exposure and moving a bit spazy like the camera wasn't locked down or was getting bumped.

Canon's next camcorder will be killer.
Watch.
Cannon is not as dumb as they have been.
They will make a Camcorder that takes Canon 35mm glass.
It will have a hyped full size chip to boot that records to open market solid state.

OUCH.. are you predicting that RED one's will soon be curiosity peices?
how long did the company last: 2 years, 3 max?
;)
Only if there is a suitcase of cocain somewhere in the equation. ;-)
Red just needs to really go for the jugular. It's a simple marketing axiom: Offer more quality product than the other guys for less. It works everytime. People will flock. It will be a lower profit margin (maybe even very, very slim), but they'll make it up on volume. The most critical thing at this juncture especially at that price point is to build "Brand". You do that by selling quality at a bargain price. Then "Brand" recognition and volume sales go through the roof.
If they don't offer a full size sensor to get that major bokeh in order to protect their Red One. Good bye, Scarlett. I'm sure they'll press along with the Red One, but they won't be as big as they could have been. This is about winning the market, not protecting Red One. It strikes me that Jannard is all about winning no matter what the cost. That's a good attitude to have when you go up against Nikon and Canon.

Ando - you have an open invitation to come to my studio at any time (business hours) for pretty much ever. You can inspect the RAW footage yourself and see that nothing whatsoever was done to it. Period. I turned the camera on... then off. Imported into FCP, cut , added music - and exported via compressor. End of story.
It's one thing to question me publicly - I don't mind. But calling me a liar... is another thing. I know it's RAW footage and that only one result came possibly come of this.. to that end - start crafting your apology letter...

to be clear - this is vincent laforet - the guy who shot the 5D MKII "reverie" video - who you are calling a liar and I shot the footage that you are spending an inordinate waste of time dissecting - and pontificating on...

Mr. Laforet, thanks for popping in and setting the record straight.
And thank you for also shooting a great little piece showing off the camera's potential.
And Ando I suggest you apologize to Laforet.

Actually, Red doesn't stand a chance.. Look at what happened to Scarlet..
And which of your assholes are you attempting to pull this from?
It's obvious that with the 5D2 and what's to come in the future for Canon's pro-sumer camcorder line, Scarlet 1.0 as it was design will not stand a chance with the competition in year 2xxx of when it is finally released. 2.0 could compete, but then it is still a just an imaginary camera with an ever chance spec sheet as demonstrated by Red so far.

OMG you people are truly messed up. You know out of 21MPs there will bound to be some that are hot/dead or whatever. I have 3 Canon DSLRs and they all show several hot pixels in the frame when shooting at high ISO or long exposure. Do I care? no...

Hey Mr. Laforet,
Great film! Thanks for showing what the 5d is capable of. The fact that footage is raw and unprocessed is just astounding. Thanks again. Nice job.
I hope my results are just as good when I turn my 5D on and then off.

All this dumping on Ando. Poor guy. I liked his dissection. It was an interesting read. As for the fake? Who knows, it is the internet after all. That's why dissections and discussion are good. They help prove truth or BS.
I found the hot pixels and the jellocam most interesting. I'd be choked if I had a hot pixel in my camera. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to mess around with this camera, but people need to take a deep breath. It's going to have limitations, just like everything else out there.
why is everyone so aggresive? wasn't me who said 5d is better than $100. don't look at me

Ando, Laforet offered you an invitation to go look at the original footage. You're basing your observations on footage shrunk to a quarter of its original size and further compressed. You can't be sure of what you're seeing because you don't have the original footage in front of you. And to go to this level of dissection seems a little strange. I'm not sure if you have something against the camera or Laforet himself.
As Vincent already stated.
What you've said in this thread and in another thread can be construed as libel and you need to be careful about that. If you want to approach Laforet personally and ask him questions contact him on his blog or email him directly. No more dissection posts please.
Also, keep in mind that this is a pre-release camera. It's not the final version, there may be some funky image things going on that have nothing to do with Laforet. It's probably a better idea to hold any major judgments and dissections for a production model. When it's released in a few months rent one and check it out for yourself.
I don't think there's anything too productive here in this thread so I'm gonna shut it down. If you want to keep discussing this camera there's at least two other threads.
Thanks.
