Gyro Stabalizers - The "NEW" 35mm Adapter

With the new crop of 35mm DSLRs that can shoot video undoubtedly the "NEW" 35mm Adapter has to be gyro stabilizers (http://www.ken-lab.com/) that kill the jellocam! :-)

What do you think?

i have the ks-8 and i love it . will even work better with my new lighter hpx170. i shoot with 5d as well but never needed to mount on my 5d will try it monday . up in the heli to shoot some seaplane footage. will try with a 300 2.8 is. lens. i don,t know what the res on the old 5d video is but will find out. crap compared to the new 5d mark2.

We are now all waiting with baited breath! The first canon non-professional footage has surface today, and it is full of jellovision like the d90. See the 2nd video here -

There is talk about what the pro's have done to hide it in the example marketing footage. Did they just not pan, or was it the use of gyros?!

So if you could please please if you can try and get a fast pan past a vertical line with the gyros on, it might put it to bed! :)

Heh. There is always shooting wider and using "Smoothcam" in FCP. I've used it occasionally to good result...

Those gyros aren't too pricey compared to some, and if the ks4/6 kit $2k-$2k8 will work on every camera I've got, and every still camera, and steadicam, and d90? Hmmm... might be worthwhile... Especially if you can take a cheap steadicam like a merlin or something, whack this on it and save yourself $7k on a flyer or above... :) I mean the steadicams are rated by weight, but i find the smaller ones just too flighty, but gyro might make the difference. Wild if it turns a featherlight dslr into something that improves "handheld" style footage into something usable. Imagine shooting a club scene in low light handheld, with just the d90 and a little gyro underneath it!? You wouldn't see some of the gait type issues anyway with the rest of the movement in the shot...

1) they are noisy (how much? anyone knows?)
2) takes two, at right angles, for full stabilization
3) you cannot pan or tilt the camera rapidly
4) they take about 5 to 10 minutes to harm up (to come up to full speed)

Depends on the ball bearings used, the construction of gyro, etc...

I think they also take ~20 minutes to "cool down" / stop running.

Even with two of the cheap gyros you would be at the price level of an EX1 with Letus Ultimate with lens included and you could save few thousands by not bringing a lightning kit ;)...

The gyro is might very well become the next "35mm adapter"!

P.S. The Gyro only keeps the camera from making quick erratic movements.

It will go a long long way in eliminating Jello! But NOT SKEW.


Skew is the result of the subject moving across the sensor faster than the sensor is read.
