Obviously the RED ONE isn't just a better camera... it's just about the best camera ever made. But I was looking over some posts on Red User with Jim complaining about how he is pushing the envelop, and the big companies like Nikon, Canon, and Sony are always trying to take business away from the little guy.
Red One has only been out for a year now, and according to their site they're now servicing up to number #2900... which if you do the math means that they've made over $49 million since they started. That doesn't include accessories, lenses, mounts...
Can RED still be thought of as the little guy if they've probably made as much as $80-90 million in the past year or so?

That would be a very rough estimate of their gross profit.
That doesn't take into account the millions they've undoubtedly spend on R&D, manufacturing, marketing, etc.
I wouldn't be surprised if RED was still in the red.
Regardless - a company that has been around for going on almost 3 years and has one camera out there - sure they took the market by storm...but I would say they are still very much 'the little guy' when compared to the likes of Sony, Panavision, Panasonic, Nikon, Canon, etc. No question.

I still think Nikon could be classified as the little guy though. How you been, Luis?

I still think Nikon could be classified as the little guy though.
In the realm of video cameras I suppose so.
I meant more in terms of the general size and scope of a company.
Of course even in the video market Nikon is a huge player due to their lenses.
Nikon is definitely has a large amount of name recognition and history behind it (and for good reason).
How you been, Luis?
I can't complain.

That's what they've grossed.
And yes, they are still very small compared to Nikon et al.
Red's advantage is they can move fast and turn on a dime.
Their disadvantage is they do not have as deep pockets and as large as an R&D network nor supplier network.

This whole thing is only another step in the evolution of moving imaging.
It's good for all.
Red will have to respond by adapting or dying.
I think they will do fine but only time will tell.
Nikon for their part should pull out all the stops and shake the industry from bottom to top right to the core.
The problem is they are a Japanese Company and that complicates things as they have an insane amount of relationships to maintain at home.

Second that.
