Hello,
I know this info is probably out there, but I'm having trouble finding it... the "Pro" in my handle is for "Productions" not "Professional" :)
Anyway, I was wondering what the file size is on the HD 5 min clip? And do you need to restart the recording every 5 mins, or are the files just saved as 5 min clips?
Thanks.

I think they are somewhere around 600-ish MB's. Others can confirm this.
The recording will stop after five minutes time, assuming you don't run out of card space, you can just hit ok again to begin recording a new clip.

Right, and, assuming the lil timer doesn't creep up on you and tell you that the camera's too warm.

Thanks, that confirms what I was able to find. Just trying to figure out if using a d90 for filming a movie is viable. What are you guys thinking? Is this going to be an option for longer pictures? Or are you looking at it as a short film camera/more of a step towards what you really want?

I don't see the 5 minute limit as a large problem for filming a movie. It would be a problem for someone filming their kid's play at school maybe, where they don't want a few second break in the footage. How often in the real world do you shoot for more than 5 minutes in one take?
File size seems to vary with image detail and exposure. Expect 600 MB for 5 minutes, but I have one that is low key that is only 420MB for 5 minutes.
I am using a SanDisk Extreme III 8gb that's rated for 20mbps. There are some that are special 30mbps, but I don't see the need at the camera's current bitrate. Beware there are 8gb SDHC cards that might not do the 13 or so mbps the D90 puts out on HD... dunno what happens with them but they might not fail gracefully.

Wouldn't that be the lil "thermocouple"?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, but I was also thinking that SD card cost could add up. I guess you do save on the fact that you can file transfer rather then having to capture. What is an 8g running these days? I have a few 16g for my Nikon d40x (whick I'll be looking to replace if the d90 really is the best of both worlds!), but I bought those quite a while back... looks like I'll have to head down to Best Buy!!!
Oh and a second question, I notice the mention of B&H a lot, and I see quite a few stores on ebay selling packages with 3-5 lenses. Any thoughts on the best place to buy?

I think mine was 60 something... not really too bad. I've yet to fill it up.
Beware of prices that are too good to be true, counterfeit high-speed memory cards are a major problem, scammers relabel cheap cards of the same capacity. Most users don't even notice until its too late and the seller has moved on. Best to buy them only from a place you trust.

How much is the Sansdisk III 8gb? Is that just a regular SD card?

I find the local PC stores in Van the best place to buy memcards. The box stores are always overpriced. Try NCIX, which is local to you. You looking at about $60 CAN for name brand 16GB.

there's also anitec on kingsway. near the mcdonalds at kingsway and victoria. they have stuff when you walk in too. ncix has to go to the back and fetch the stuff (but i do buy from ncix a lot because they have better prices)

With my current cameras, I can do all my capturing right on my computer through Firewire. With the exception of the HDMI abilities of the D90, can I use the USB connection in a similar fashion? Or is USB just for transfering the data from the memory card?

Heh. For the videos I work on, I let it roll till the end of tape. I find working with three full video tracks (set for three different shots) and 1 audio in post a lot more efficient than working with a whole mess of different takes.
I sync the three video tracks to the audio, and do my cutting from there.
Otherwise I am spending way too much time synching all my different video clips to all the different audio clips.

question about the sandisk extreme III 30MB/s edition. Anybody know when in september its due to be released? So far i can only see it on B&H photo but nowhere else. Not on amazon.com, not on bestbuy, not on adorama, not at ritz. etc

I'm curious about this, too. Any D90 owners used the USB-to-HD method? Or does it choke?

nobodys' really answered, but what's the best write rate for this camera? 20mb/s and up?
and is it better to get a SD card or CF
i was thinking about this

The D90 takes SD cards, CF cards are much larger and can not be used with it. I am not sure if that card is fast enough, I am using the Extreme III at 20mbps. It would be best to check with your vendor to be sure the card is fast enough.

Okay thanks. I'll do some searching. So 20mbs is good I take it.

d90 may go 30MB/s with the new Extreme III 30MB/s cards.
with other cards will go up to 20MB/s
also the new extreme cards won't do 30MB/s on older hardware like D80.
they will reach cameras' maximum
CF cards are not used at this level (d60, d80, d90 or similar dslrs from other brands). SD cards fit best the speed and size.
D300 or D3/700 benefit from the advantages of the CF cards' speed.

as Charlie Gibson would say, I got lost in a hailstorm of words, kidding...
So I'm new to d90, 5mins is the limit that the camera will allow you to shoot before stopping or that's the most a SD can shoot?

Ummm so... if my class 4 card writes at 8mps and the class 6 writes at 16mps. I can see an advantage of keeping the buffer more clear for still shots.. But is that the solid rate it writes 720 video at? There is a link a few posts ago that suggests it 17mpbs for 1080, but this d90 is 720 which is like 9mps according to the post above,,
http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Item(2552)-SDSDHV-008G-A15-SanDisk_Video_HD_SDHC_8GB.aspx
So if my d90 is managing to record video to both classes of cards. Then does it require the class 6? Or is it using it's still buffer somehow to keep up. It's 24 per second but that would not be after compression, or anything like the size of the uncompressed images from the still shots.
I only ask because class 4 32gb's are really cheap :)

I use a Scandisk Micro SD 8Gb in a SD converter (I had it for my mobile phone) class rating is 4 and this works fine.
I also found a really old 128Mb SD card (must be 5 years old) it has no rating and when I insert it gives my about 35s of recording time. It will record no problem when I stop recording (I did about 24s worth) it took a while to finish writing to the card so I guess the D90 has quite a large buffer size

Gareth,
Now you've hit the nail on the head for me something happened yesterday while shooting. I was shooting in full sun, nothing different than I could tell, and right after about 10 minutes of use (in about 3 x 3m lots), it then started giving me a 30 second countdown and jumping out of LV mode... Luckily it was a 20 second shot, so I got it anyway.... rare.
I thought it was just overheating, though it had very little use that day.
I had a 32gb class 4 sdhc pny card in it. I had no problems the day before with it, and it shot a lot longer, afternoon sun though...
Could have been heat, or length of shot.. but MAYBE it was jumping out to let me know it was fully buffered up on the class 4 card????
It's quite likely that the buffer had to work overtime perhaps, and that heated it up enough to want to jump out? Plenty of space left on the card.
That bears some testing.... No one has really been able to confirm the writing rate requirement for 24fps shooting on this unit yet. And until the price drops on 32gb class 6, ... hmm 3 months maybe? I does matter....
I went though 16gb on one short scene the day before, and I wasn't about to pull the unit out of the steadicam cage to change cards whilst in the back of a moving truck...
Anyone had issues or remember posts about it jumping out of LV mode... was it heat/use or class 4 cards?
Thebes

Mine jumped out of LV after it had been in almost constantly for an hour. I took 20 some minutes of footage in that hour. I think it was the sensor overheating, I was using a 20mbps card so it shouldn't have been buffering issues.
I now take it out of LV after a shot, while moving camera or whatever, and have not had a repeat.

So leaving it on for 10m shooting nothing, as I did not want to re-lock the exposure, and my volunteer test actor was impatient and hungry...
That could be the diff :)
Heh. Good point. LCD's chew all the juice. Wouldn't think chewing juice would directly affect the sensor getting hot, but I guess it's a small housing, and whatever. Leaving the lcd on in the lv mode without shooting is a recipe for both sensor and lcd getting warmer...

When I record using my normal 8Gb SD card I can almost instantaneously start recording again. On the old 128Mb card when I had finished the record icon had a line through it and was flashing, it took a good 10-15 seconds for the camera to finish recording to the card.... but I did not reach the buffer capacity. I think I have an old non class rated 1Gb card still lying around... it would be interesting to see what happens when I record until the card is full.
I wonder if the 5 minute limit has nothing to do with overheating but everything to do with the buffer size.... just a thought

i just bought my d90. looking for memorycards.
planning to buy 2 16gb cards.
just wondered if i should buy the 15mb/s or 30mb/s cards. are the 30mb ones worth the money for the benifits you get?
thanks for any comments.
