View Full Version : DVX just for fun
When I was in high school all I wanted to do was get into the movie industry, direct and make movies. A few years later in college I decided that I wanted to do something else so I changed majors. Video was and is still a hobby that I enjoy a lot. I've used the Sony PD150 before and was really impressed with the results. Now after seeing some of the films on this website and seeing what the DVX can do I can't stop thinking about 24P. It looks great and I really like that film look. I've been saving for a while now, but haven't been able to justify investing in a camera just to make a few shorts. Having spent years taking pictures with a still camera I find myself enjoying capturing beautiful images. That's all I really want to do with a camcorder; I want to put together a nice short piece and add some nice background music. I don't think the same can be achieved with a $1500 camcorder. I'm not going to profit from this, I'm not looking to get into movie making, casting or anything like that. The Water's Edge in the frame grabs and film section is really what I'm looking to do.
It's a hobby and I'd like to have some fun with it. What would you do?

I don't really have $4000 just lying around. I'm not filthy rich. It's a hobby and I'd like to have some fun with it. What would you do?
Get the cheapest camcorder with balanced audio you can afford, and a cheap G5 computer. Throw in a standard kit of goodies, immediately or as you can afford it, and you can do much of what the DVX can do, only you have to give up a little of the look. In exchange, the camera is 1500 bucks cheaper.

If you can afford it, go ahead and get it. I have spent close to 5k on this thing and accys in the past 2 months, and still have no immediate projects in the works that will let me recoupe any part of the investment (this may change very soon tho, fingers crossed).
But yea, if you have a place to live, and food to eat, and can get the DVX on top of that, why not. If worst comes to worst, there are plenty of people who would love to buy a lightly used camera at a bit of a discount.
