I'm trying to make some final touches to a trailer I'm editing. Vegas had been crashing on me occasionally with the message "An Exception has occurred". I could deal with this until once it loaded back up with a recovery/save file from nearly two weeks ago and I quickly saved without realizing. Because of this, I ended up overwriting my current project file and losing a bunch of work. At this point it began crashing more and more often until it got to the point where the file won't even open completely before crashing again. I found similar posts but no answers.

Here's the details on the "exception":

I haven't seen this problem myself, so I can't really comment, but a quick google search on the problem dll "mcmpgvdec.dll" shows that this is a somewhat common problem. One solution that worked for at least one person was to replace the problem dll with a copy from another location on the Hard Drive. You should find one here:

C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 8.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\mxfplug

and another one here:

C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 8.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\mcplug

It may be worth swapping them. Sorry I can't be of any more help.

HDV? Canon?

yep. shot with xha1, captured through hv20 using hdvsplit. i'll try moving files to see if that will fix the problem.

Looking around, I see a lot of people getting that error with HDVSplit.

Did you try capturing through Vegas?

I couldn't get it to recognize correctly through vegas, which is why i went with hdv split.

The new version of the HDV codec that Vegas uses, should be on Vegas Pro 8.0c (there was a public beta about it a few weeks ago). That version doesn't crash with HDVSplit files apparently. You just have to wait for it to get released and retry.

I get the same problem. It's extremely frustrating. Just have to wait for the next release of Vegas.

This is why it's very important especially with Vegas to use versioning with your saves, don't just save one copy, every time you've altered the original source project, do 'save as' and give it a new version, eg: 0.1, the next version would be 0.2. then if things go pear shaped you can go back to the one that worked.
And I get this confounded message constantly, no matter how many times I've rebuilt on different machines, hopefully 8.0c will put a end to it, but I think it's this endemic Sony memory leak problem. Basically your system reserves so much ram that you've preallocated to your graphics card port etc, and if you breach this then it's crash we go. I've been having to render anything upto about 1hour in chunks as it means a crash if I don't.
So because of versioning, if i've added too much material to the timeline and it exceeds the amount of ram left after a save, which means this message comes up as soon as I open vegas, I open the earlier version, render it in bits, then bring back the rendered bits into a new project, which halves your ram requirement, your filters etc really knock up the ram requirements, so once you've rendered them they're part of the footage and don't load up your system.

The 8.0c version is out. Just try it and see if it fixes the crash for you.
