Thanks for the nice welcome everyone!

After my rush-job of a movie, "The Enchanted Notes of a Time-Traveling (puppy-love) Piano" I was determined to start this one with a good foundation- The SCRIPT.

I think I got it now. It's been quite a journey, and I was itching to start this thread a long time ago, but I had to wait till the writing was there.

Mucho thanks to Alex Whitmer who helped me get over the big hump and much closer to a lockable version.

------------------------------
now I'm kicking into high gear.

Still to do:

Find the two leads- Jack, (30's-40's) and Dan, (20's-30's)
Storyboard everything-
Work on some Sound FX-
Paint the set (my apartment)
build several props-
Finish my new DIY DOF adapter-

Crew:
Boom Op-
AC-
Makeup-
DP- It'll be me unless I can get someone good.
Composer- Jon Brion is my 1st choice...
Script supervisor/ PA / production designer-

... much to do. This is SO FUN!

I heard John Belushi brought a chocolate cake to his SNL audition (fo real)

Sadly, none of the actors brought me any kind of edible sweets. It DEFINITELY would have swayed my judgement.

I've been meaning to post updates... but I'm running on full throttle. Thanks for the nudge Susanne.

Here's the short version.

Auditions went really well. Pretty small turnout, but I got two fantastic actors. What they brought to the script was better than chocolate cake. I even had to reshuffle the shooting schedule so that I could use one, losing two crew members in the process. Sorry ZaZa.

Yesterday and today, built an awesome doorway dolly. Take that Matthews!

Found a sweet key prop today (the ball)

Connected with an awesome Production designer/ associate producer/ props man/ great guy who is as passionate about this stuff as I am, (and accomplished the two things above)
You're the man Chris!

Made a first-draft shot list and storyboards, and lighting plan.

Frantically working on machining my new DIY DOF adapter, rails, and follow focus. I am CRAZY. I should've pluncked down the cash a long time ago for an SG or RR or something, but I'm too deep now to turn back.

Rehearsal with the two main actors tomorrow.

First day of shooting is a week from tomorrow, the big day is Oct 6th.

I said that I wouldn't be rushing this one and leave everything till the last minute, but here I am again- rushing at the last minute. My blood pressure is probably sky high, my nerves are being abused, I only have time for a few hours sleep.... I am ALIVE! I love this movie making stuff.

Never fear, Anti de Presence will be here, Oct 27.

Tim Joy
09-29-2008, 09:01 PM
Today I had a non-stop (not even for a pee) 10 hour machining session and made the real rails. I think I built them tough enough to hold an imax camera, so they should be just fine for the dvx.
Say goodbye to my "woodies"

I also made two connectors for the dolly track, extending the shot another 5 feet.

Now for the follow focus. Got Zaza's old gearbox to tinker with.

Friday morning is the first shoot. AHHHHH!

Tim Joy
10-03-2008, 12:33 PM
Friday shoot was a success!

I had the best crew. They all came down the night before and tested the setups, so everyone knew what to do when it came time for the shoot.

This is the first movie I have been able to rehearse with the cast and crew. It makes me realize that REHEARSALS are really important, especially when actors have only two hours to get into makeup and shoot 3 setups, one dolly shot, and one crane shot.

I had two rehearsals with the actors, so they knew what to do and only needed a few takes to get what we needed.

BTS pics and video coming soon.

a two hour shoot??? That's possible?

Apparently it is, but only when the actors are well rehearsed, and every camera and lighting setup has been tested and tweaked the day before. My compliments to the crew for pulling it off! ...and of course, just as we were about to shoot their closeups (with dialog) TWO lawn mowers started up across the street. Luckily, we were able to bribe them with bagels and they held off for ten minutes while we got what we needed... whew.

EXCELLENT!!! Can't wait to see some picts! I hope the FF gears worked...

I couldn't finish machining the follow focus for this first shoot. I'll be working like mad this weekend to have it for monday. There was only one focus pull on Friday (on the crane, no less) and Chris did a great job of grabbing the lens barrel on the way down.

It's 10:17 pm. The big shooting day is tomorrow. Everything is coming together as planned. The new DIY Follow focus is working great.... Which reminds me.

I would like to declare this production
Most DIY Twilightfest entry

Here's the list of stuff i've made, mostly over the last two months.

1- Spinning GG DOF adapter machined from a solid block of aluminum with Silver Nanotm on-the-fly collimation adjustment, and flip up SLR viewfinder. (not working yet)
2- Machined aluminum rails, with stainless steel rods; built like a truck.
3- Machined aluminum follow-focus with machined plastic gears.
4- Doorway dolly with heavy welded steel frame and skate wheels.
5- 8' aluminum Jib arm
6- Light pins for ceiling mounted lights.
7- A few DIY lights and lots of other little things.

If anyone would like to challenge me at this self-declared title, please do so.

OK.. So I got a VERY rough cut of everything we have so far (one more day to shoot) and it's coming together nicely. I'm watching it right now....

...Trim that.

... try a different take.

Editing is exciting to see it come together, but frustrating when I see how much I f'd up. Especially the stuff that I was aware of on set and thought it wouldn't matter.. and IT DOES. ooops. I guess that's why I do this- TO LEARN.

I'm excited to announce I have secured Neal Acree (http://www.nealacree.com) as composer. He will Rock 'the House.

... Back to it.

Congrats on the rough cut. I hear ya on the whole "I'm in the edit room and I don't have the coverage I thought I had". I have to admit, my weak point is directing - shot lists? storyboards? what are those? I learned a ton, though, and that's what keeps me coming back to these fests.

Hello everyone! Finally got around to registering.

Chris Shumway here - 1st AC/Associate Producer/Set design/Post-shoot Beer Runner for "Anti De Presence"

I've been trolling the forums for some time now, reading up on everyone's film adventures from this year's fest. It is great knowing that there are other people in the same boat as you are, overcoming filmmaking obstacles while at the same time still loving their art. I look forward to future DVXuser endeavors and perhaps working with some of you!

You guys seemed to like the behind the scenes posts, so here is another one - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95pguuGEz1I This is the making of the dolly, featuring Will the wonderful welder. He also happens to be our dolly grip for the shooting days.

There will be more behind the scenes updates coming soon, I hope the last few weeks of filming go smoothly for everyone.

I hope I can live up to everyones expectations.... especially my own. (those are the hardest)

I've realized that the sound design will be Mucho Importanto to this piece, like another character. I played around with some music last night, and isn't it amazing how it can change the feeling of a scene so much? I worked in scoring for years and still I'm amazed. Trying to find the basic concept and have a temp score for Neal and others to see. It's pretty much impossible to judge the quality without the music and basic sound design. At least I have the time to play with it.

Tim... THE king of DIY! How goes it? Have you got an edit together? Is it all falling in place?

Oooo. The King. I like it.

...as if my ego isn't big enough.

So I'm on Edit version 3 now. It clocks in at 6:11. I placed some WILD choices for the temp score and it led me to a whole new concept for the *big scene*. I would like to reshoot it to work with what I'm thinking, but there's no time for that now, (or is there?) so I have another idea that will be nearly as good. Sorry to be so vague.... you understand.

This highlights the importance of test shots and having music in mind BEFORE shooting. If I had, (like Robert Rodriguez does), shot the whole movie as test shots, edited it together and put music to it, I would've found this extra nugget of goodness. Unfortunately, I was too busy machining gears and stuff to do that for this flick. Next time.

I've shown the cut to the actors and crew with a great response. I'll have a locked cut this week to send to the composer, drop in the shots we do on Sat, and work on the sound design and CC. Oh my. That's a lot of work. Two weeks should be juuuust enough.

I think I have a locked cut. How do you know when it's locked? Is there a certain feeling? Or is it when your composer says, "Gimmme Gimme Gimme! Now Now!"

I'm working on color correction now, my weakest area. Here's an outtake grab with CC.
Question: Is it too dark? ? Maybe too contrasty?

That grab is looking good! Can't say if its too dark or not, depends on the scene.

I want it to be dark but still visible, so you can see the scene, but have that Dark feeling.

Anti de Presence is officially wrapped shooting! I knocked out the last VFX shot last night at 3am.
It is locked too!
Sent to Neal for scoring.
Got a first pass done on the CC.

Had to take a little time out to watch part of Zeitgeist Addendum. If you haven't heard about this film, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Your world will never be the same.

Thanks! It did work pretty well, although we realized half-way through the shoot that there was a speck of dust somewhere inside... couldn't ever get it out, so the film will be featuring an extra character that plays the all-seeing God role. You know... he "watches over everything [all scEene]"
I call him Freddy. Freddy the Fricken Spec o' Dust. Life goes on.

Update:--> 10-24-08

Working heavy on Sound Design. This is going to be a MEGA sound design project. I already have 30 tracks going, and only got through the 1st minute, so I have a long way to go... I'm sure I'll be one of the last ones to upload again. Going to try not to stay up all night Sunday, but it may come to that. A little extra hair loss won't be too bad.

The sound design is a crucial element that adds so much, and is so subtle.

Neal is working on the score and coming along very nicely. It's such a joy working with talented people.

I like to leave the camera rolling between takes, (cause tape is cheap) and ended up using a few shots of the in-between times in the final cut. Sometimes works for reaction shots, but most of the time it's me yapping. (Also a good way to critique my directing)

Okay, here's my notes straight off the nice little chart Zaza posted:

F'ing brilliant! VFX not over the top. Startled several times. I thought "WTF? He'd just happen to have that?" at the ball bit, but the end made the randomness make sense.

And now, to elaborate. The clues to the nature of this story are all there the entire time, I just didn't see them for what they were. Even the title clues you in. This is a well crafted film, and easily the "sleeper" of this fest. Full 10 from me. :)

Winner. The perfect short and THE most creepiest I've watched in any fest, personally.

What you REALLY gotta think about, after you watch it, is what really happened.

SPOILER BELOW

This little girl was playing with dolls, talking about religion and drugs, anti-depressants (if I'm to assume right). Good grief, what a rockin' short.

I kid you not, man. I had to rewind about four times to see what happened on the couch. Infreakin' sane. LOL So subtle yet effective as hell. Not to mention the shadow play. The second watch puts the shadows and everything in perspective.

Perfect TWIST OMG win

Jack Daniel Stanley

Yeah. Very interesting work here.

At first I was like "WTF? Is he a drug dealer or a man of God. Crystal ball and a candle? WTF?"

I like that she's a twisted kid playing drug dealer and "exorkism".

One thing I can't quite wrap my noodle around. And I don't know if it matters that much because it came from thinking about the film afterward - what Hitchcock called a refrigerator question: the audience is there with you in the telling of the story then later when they get home and open the refrigerator to make a sandwich they say "hey wait a minute ..." So here it is, see if I can express this clearly...

SPOILERS (highlight to read)
So one interpretation is
A) that the girl is intentionally making shadows on the wall and making ghost voices and then having the dolls react to her voice and shadows and moving furniture.

BUT ...

B) it seems like those are incidental. Just her moving her hand around to position them etc. But the characters, the dolls, don't have free will. So they can't be reacting to things she doesn't want them to be reacting to. In otherwords if she was playing drug deal, then the drug dealer would have never heard her voice and the story go off in that direction unless she wanted them to, unless she was playing drug deal interrupted by an "excorkism".

Am I making any sense? I mean it would have to be "A" right, and yet the dolls seem to have free will and be reacting to non intentional stimuli from the girl.

This has more complicated layers of meta-reality than the Twilight Zone episode you are homage-ing. In the Twilight Zone episode, the dolls are clearly aware and humans just don't know it. As long as no humans are around they can think and act freely. Here they seem to be doing that but they can't be they are just her puppets.

END SPOILER

Maybe I am way overthinking this - I probably am. But after viewing, it was something that made my head hurt a little.

In any case. I enjoyed the fllm.

Sorry if this has been answered before.

But could you please tell me what lens you were using when the two guys enter the room for the first time?

And can you confirm that as a dolly shot vs. steadicam.

Thanks very much,

Jack

Tim Joy
10-31-2008, 04:39 PM
Thanks Jack! I don't think you're over-thinking it...

I have a refrigerator question for you that might help.

Highlight to read

If she's controlling and moving the dolls, and they are both moving, she only has two hands... so who's hand shadow is on the wall? And why does she say, "It's evil."

End refrigerator question

I don't have ONE solid interpretation of this. I have 2.

That was a 17mm f4 canon fd lens, on the dolly.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Great! I think like a few I was wtf, a crystal ball and a candle, and sure here they are. It was great to see a payoff to those questions, but besides that what a twist. Very cool.

Visually, I thought it could have benefited from some harder lighting to help with the tension and suspense.

Sound, pretty solid all the way, couple of times sound was a little wide sounding when they were a tad too far from the mic.

This was amazing. It reminded me of a short on "On the lot" with a similar ending. I thought the lighting was too "lit for comedy" toward the beginning, but when I saw the end I realized that was the point and I though it was perfect. As an art department guru, I was thinking what the heck are these set dressings. A cardboard cutout? a paper fire place? What is going on? I think this is my favorite of the fest so far.

Man was this a fun piece.

SPOILERS

Agree, so much 'what the' but with a huge payoff. Kid was great, and did a great job - right up there with Boo in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Pacing was nice. Music spot on for the theme. I had a hard time hearing some of the dialogue however.

Set design was very good, fit the story nicely. Fireplace was a kick.

Didn't quite get why the guy stumbles when the door to door preacher arrives. Felt kinda forced there.

Love the opening scene where Anoushka walks to her room, and that mystery figure slumps in the background. Nice suspense set up. Nice tilt of the frame.

Would have like to have seen a different cut from the closing of the bedroom door to the gut laying on the floor, like a close on an eye bursting open - since now the girl would begin to animate things. I don't knwo, it felt off to me fo reasons unknown.

Really like this piece a lot. The Mr. Bill homage at the end is great.

Excellent film.

I'll have to check out this "On the lot". Haven't heard of it before.
When I sent it to the composer, he said, " Oh yeah, reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode..." and proceeded to tell me the story and I thought, OH $hit, I'm probably just stealing this without even knowing. I fell asleep watching some Twilight Zone and probably picked it up that way. I plead innocence. i think I have a different take on a similar concept. *I hope* anyway.

Alex- Great suggestions. The reason the guys stumbles is because there's a step there. I didn't even think about then, but see it now.
I was wrestling with some of the dialog, especially the scene at the door, which was done in a hurry, and it was raining. The street is only 20 ft away and I wanted it sound like they're inside. I hate ADR,( and there's none in the film), but to clean up those tracks was really tough. I assume that's where you couldn't hear the dialog?
What's the Mr. Bill Homage?

Thanks everyone for your generous comments. i'm smiling ear-to-ear.

Great one. A true Twilightfest entry, where nothing is as it seems to be...

There's that part where the preacher/drug dealer realizes hes hearing voices too, and those shots had some weird shadows of the chars. Besides that, there's really nothing to complain; music, acting, idea...it's great that naive 'crystal ball' and already lighten up 'candle' reveal itself at the end.

Once again, great job.

...Talk about refrigerator question. Last night, it occured to me, in a creepy twilight-zoney kinda way, that, although his name is never said, in the script, the guy on the kitchen floor is named.... Jack. The other guy's name, which is only said once I think, is... Daniel.
It started to weird me out a little, so I stopped thinking about it.

Hey,

We loved this. And Im not just saying that because you liked my film ;-)). It just felt right, had a nice mix of humour and twilight-esque vibes kicking in. Loved the shadowy hand throughout.

My favourite line 'get me a crystal ball and a candle'. lol. I'd love to see more of your work. you created a personal world which was very unique to anything else in this fest.

SPOLIER AHEAD :

I will say that the ending is very similar to that twlightlight zone episode where all the dolls relaise they are in a tin. And there was that 'on the lot' episode (if you bothered to watch it...lol) where they all realise they are figures in a doll's house. However, I think twilight zone episodes always lend themselves to one of a few 'types' of endings and I didn't see it coming until the end so you got me.

very nice work.

The cardboard cutouts reminded me of Science of Sleep. It seemed to be an excellent homage to Michel Gondry. Bravo!

I'm glad you picked up on that. He is my fav director, and I was definitely paying homage to him with the set design and the "crew-acting" (moving blankets and chairs and shadows and stuff). We were going for a Gondry meets David Lynch style. A little different grading in the living room scene I feel we would be there.

Incidentaly- those cardboard cutouts are the "producer's cameo's" (I'm in the back, stuck the wife up front :)). My dad made them for our wedding, so they were the perfect available prop to add a little extra WTF.

Darkline-

I'm really glad you liked it. We all worked very hard on it, and it's nice to see such a great response. I never realized how far out of left field the "get me a crystal ball..." line comes from. Everyone seems to like it, especially the speed he comes back with it.

I think the only criticism I can give is in regards to your actors. Thankfully you have killer sound design and sick effects to distract us, but I think both of their performances were a little lukewarm. thoughts after second viewing.

love the dutch angle, that with the first note of the music tells us right off the bat something is amiss. great camera movement onto the bible, love it. dialogue is a little hard to hear after "have you heard the good news" on the porch. Nice use of sound fx. I like what the actors are doing in this, they feel present in the scene. the tension is building well and the music supports it. The fireplace is a really nice touch in reminding us this world is just not right. Perfect twist at the end, really nails it.

the first time I watched it, I thought the drugs in the bible were candy corn. For some reason that really felt appropriate given the ending. Awesome job on this, one of my favorites

Hey,

Just caught the piece. I really really dug this film. I thought all the elements worked really nicely and you had me going every step of the way. The lighting design and music first struck me as really really good. I think there migh be some sound or dialogue issues here or there, but I think those are negligible for the most part.

This story has some amazingly seemless tone shifts, I think, and my brain was seriously working overtime just to keep up with stuff. LOVE that about this piece.

This story man, wow. The elements work really really well together for me. Love that the stuff in his "house" are drawings and you think he's just a nut case but then it works in the overall story.

This one is so friggin' good. I love it. Sorry I can't be constructive but only gushy. But I dug it.
Gushy is OK with me :crybaby: (happy tears)

The STORY. After my timefest entry, the 2nd film in a row where the story and script was crap, I was determined to make it great this time. After getting the rules and theme, I was itching to start a thread for two months while I bled over each version of the script. At some point, I would like to post the early versions here so everyone can see the progression. The early drafts have maybe a few lines in common with the final. I was fully committed to test out the saying, "scripts are not written, they're REwritten". I'm a firm believer now. I also couldn't have done it without my group of friends and family that would read each version and delicately tell me, "this sucks". It took a long time to get to the point of casting, so I didn't have as much post production time as I would've liked, but the script HAD to be there first.
...Hence the slight audio issues. I will fix it for the next version.

A very intrigues and funny film. At the beginning I thought, oh no a moral religious one, but then the story turns in an other direction and at the end it still turns again in an other direction. Surprise after surprise. Very enjoyable - compliments - I love it!
Susanne

Thanks Susanne! Good to see you back here.

I was tossing the festival theme and "rules" around in my noodle and thought, "What if... EVERYTHING is not what it first appears to be?" I went on a quest to make every moment seem like something else, and keep the audience on a tippy-toe path of discovery. Hopefully I did it. :)

Awesome job here. Also love the color of the movie, how did you achieve this? Cheers!

Paint the set. White is death. Tons of light, and white balance. Added a little green in post. I still feel the movie needs work in the color grading dept. Especially the living room scene.

DUDE!
AWESOME AWESOME FILM!
I watched it with my girlfriend.. and when the sheet flew off the couch she practically jumped out of her seat! Well done!
Loved the set... it's great when you have production designers huh?
and LOVED the big reveal tilt at the end... not even gonna ask how you did it... it's too good. Bravo!

Ha! That's great to hear. Yes! production designers! Never again without them. Yay Chris!
There are no VFX in the movie, all done in-camera or practical FX. The tilt you speak of is nothing more than a quick dissolve. KISS method, and another homage to my man Michel Gondry.

Appreciate the comments everyone!

I think the real horror of the movie was the “father” of the little girl. ::shutter:: ugh.

I was really bothered by a few things in this flim. BUT, many of the problems (and there were many), were washed away by the twist/reality of what was happening.

While I was watching, I really felt the execution was better than the individual pieces. The acting was well enough, the dialogue, lighting ect…. But as a whole it was just odd. I thought the direction was bland and the script off. But once I got that the girl was using the characters to act out what was going on in her life… damn clever. It instantly made everything purposeful and work exactly how it should have. I’m still a little weary of the wait for the reveal, but it’s a solid film. Good work.

Excellent. I agree that it feels odd until the reveal. We made it that way on purpose and apparently succeeded in that dept.

Thanks for the review!

The actor playing the Door to Door Preacher/Drug Dealer looks like the guy from The Office (British version). I think both your actors would work great in a comedy role.

As for this film, to me it played more comedy than scary. Not sure why. I think mostly because of the actors expressions and some of the dialog. Like him being a drug dealer than all of a sudden doing an exorcist.

The girls father was probably the scariest person in this fest.

Overall, I enjoyed watching it but I really can't say it was strong in any one area.

I definitely felt like this film played more as a comedy/satire than as horror -- until the reveal that is. Once that happens there is a very creepy/ominous vibe that permeates the remainder of the run time. Quite effective and quite awesome.

While I had reservations about some of the mood and lighting of the setpieces, once the reveal happens I completely forgave all. Everything suddenly clicked and the pieces fit together rather well. I especially dug the transition between the live action to the dolls -- genius...

Your actors did a great job of balancing believability with a touch of insanity -- kept me guessing and I laughed out loud at the 'crystal ball and candle' line. Again, at first I wasn't sure what to make of their performances but as the film kept rolling (and again, the end comes into play) everything there just worked.

It's funny -- as I was watching the film, it actually reminded me of the Twilight Zone Movie when the kid gets all nuts and starts creating a cartoonish room (I half expected to see a freaky ass rabbit pop up). So you nailed that twilight aspect completely.

Great job with this one!

Thanks for the great comments. Actually, there IS a rabbit that pops up, only one or two frames though, so you gotta pause and go frame-by-frame at 5:35. Our actress was intent on getting it in the movie. :)

Great twist ending! Best Twilight Zonish ending of the fest!

As I was watching it I was a little thrown off by the cheap looking set design. Looked awful fake. Oh, well, low budget and all... When the final reveal came, it all made sense. Wow. Great premise, well executed!

Review as I watch the second time (lie, it's the 4th time)
Love the shots and the angles. Nice reveal of the Holy Bible. Oh wicked!!! I saw the shadow of the hand on the stairway and that was super cool! Candy corn drugs, crudely drawn (in crayon) set design... LOVE IT! It's freaky man, but funky cool.

On first viewing would have been better to review this. On second viewing we're in on the joke. Even the way he says "exorcism".

I love the way he gets the candle and the crystal ball so quickly. Originally I was "WTF" but then ot all tied together. Excellent production value and your actors were spot on.

Great dialog. And nice dissolve to the doll house. I absolutely LOVED this film. GREAT Twilight Zone episode.

Congrats, you seriously spooked me. You have a real handle on creating tension. I was quite unnerved. The performances were very good. Only thing that took me out of it a bit was the slight tonal shifts to comedy in a couple of spots. They felt out of place, and blew the creepiness you so successfully created. Anyhow, this is definitely in my top 3 so far.

The "WTF" seems to be the common denominator with most people. I'm glad you've watched it so many times. We worked hard to fill it with clues and references so you can watch it multiple times and see things you didn't before. There's still a couple things that nobody has mentioned yet....

oh, and that's not candy corn, but I see why you would say that, and it fits the story anyway. I don't know if I should put an ECU in there to show that they are pills???

I have to give a big credit to my composer Neal Acree for a lot of that. I still get the chills at the end because of his music. Also, that devilish look from Anoushka helps too.

Very good story! I love all the twists and how throughout the film you were constantly leading us in different directions!

The score definitely added to the creepiness of the film and I love all the hand shadows on the wall; that made sense at the end.

You might have meant to do this on purpose, but I went back to rewatch it and had a hard time figuring out what the girl was whispering throughout the living room scene and I also had a hard time understanding what she says at the very end as she walks out the door.

Both lead actors did an excellent job! :)

Thanks Teresa, you know how much I enjoyed "I Would Rather".

I would love to hear from others about the intelligibility of the voice during the "haunting" big climax part. I did some pitch processing and other effects, but thought you could still understand what the voice is saying, if not, I'll definitely clean it up for a future version. Same goes for the lines at the very end, although those only have a little reverb on them.

The other voices during the two other "scares" towards the beginning are not meant to be recognized.

Definitely one interpretation. We tried to close one story line, (the answer to all the "WTF" stuff happening throughout) but leave others open for the afterthoughts.

But, if that's what's REALLY going on, then she would need 3 arms. See my post responding to Jack's comments on the story a few pages back.

Funny how the pills play as candy corn. They are actually vitamin C pills. I have a closer shot that shows more detail that I left out, because I thought you could see them clearly, but maybe I'll put in back in later, so you THINK it's candy corn at first, then see that they are pills. great finish - didn't see that coming. acting a bit wooden at times, but overall, kept me guessing.

Thanks. I think...

We experimented with the acting in rehearsals to see how far we could go in the direction of "they act and move like *what they are*" (don't want to give it a away here, but if you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about) and we have a really funny take where they went WAY far out in this direction. I'll post that one a little later... :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

So even though they may seem a little wooden at times, just know that it was done on purpose, and hopefully makes sense, (and works for you) especially on multiple viewings.

I'd love to address the critiques of Anti De Presence. This forum is great for improving your craft and that's mainly why I do it. So far I feel like I've been showered with praise, and while it feels really good, I think it could be better.

My own personal critiques-
-Sound mix is a tad flat. I think at the 11th hour I compressed the mix a little too much.
-There are quite a few continuity errrors, but nobody has mentioned them yet, so maybe the story keeps attention away from it.
-The lighting in the living room scene could've been moody-er.

Other critiques I've heard.

-A few lines of dialog are too low, especially the beginning at the porch.
-Double and triple shadows in the living room.
-lack of camera movement in the living room scene. (where should it go?)

Nobody seems to have a problem with the story or script. Any other suggestions?

Thanks everyone for helping me become a better filmmaker!

i actually notice many continuity issues on the first viewing.
1. like the crane shot in the start one shot he wasn't holding the bible..the next shot he was
2.the shot with him leaning the chair toward him
3. This one is big...when the drug dealer was walking over to the "addict" right b4 the addict went to his knees. We see the dealer walking to him with a decent amount of space between them...next shot we see him right up on him.
4. the shot with the guy fidling with the cardboard cut out...i noticed quite a few more..those were just examples. what i find is that ur just a tad off, either b4 or after in the sequence. like with the leaning of the chair...he leaned back...then we see him lean back again. To tell u the truth continuity is one of my nitpicks so i guess thats why i noticed so many and without the ablility to rewind it as i had...it would have passed with just a "huh..what just happened?" reaction and moved on. :)

However I still LOVED this film!! i;d be echoing alot of people about what i liked about it so i wont get into that. ..but i must echo the crystal ball thing. I was like " are u kidding me...he just HAPPEN to have that in his house, oh puleezze" :D. It was all revealed though.

Good Job man!!

This was really a super-clever, well done piece. I thouroughly enjoyed it. I thought everything worked well, including the music. The actors were really good and I think that's one of the most important things with indie films. Everything else can be great, but if the actors don't pull off the story, everything suffers, so nice job. I kept wondering though what it would have looked like if it had been in B&W. It would have really been twilighty! Good job.

Holy smokes! I absolutely love your set. You mentioned that you are getting mostly praise... well, it is entirely deserved. I can see all of the hard work that went in to making this movie and I am extremely impressed. Your story rocks as well. The only thing that threw me was an occasional focusing issue and one or two odd cuts but I'd have to go back and re-watch to really be able to point them out (minor stuff).

Great film!

I enjoyed this a lot. Very, very nice work. I haven't read the entire thread, so I may be repeating some things, but here it goes.

-I enjoyed the soundtrack. At times it was a bit overpowering, but overall I felt it moved the story and enhanced the feel.
-The acting was pretty good. I wasn't distracted or taken out of the story due to poor acting as I have been in a few of the shorts.
-Many of your camera moves were beautifully smooth and professional feeling. I especially liked the shot of the two men heading upstairs.
-The art was great- what a beautiful match between the doll house and the set. The transition between the two worlds was brilliant.
-The plot and "twist" were very fun. It was a bit slow paced as the two men kind of sort of make the transaction upstairs, but once we get past that and into the ghost stuff, it picks back up.

Things that weren't my favorite:
-There were some continuity jumps between some of the shots. At the beginning, the guy with the bible starts to turn around and you cut to his CU and he's completed the turn. Just some very minor jumps that didn't quite feel right. Overall, however, I ignored them and followed the story.
-Lighting felt a bit flat in the room upstairs. Not distracting, just felt like it could be a little more interesting
SPOILER:
-I wondered why the men could fight the "ghost" when it was the girl who was creating the story. Then I realized it could just be that the little girl made the entire story in the doll house and the action stopped when she dropped them. Then I questioned whether a little girl would be making a story in her doll house about a drug exchange.

Overall very nice work. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

It's your old pal/composer Neal Acree. I wanted to stop by and show my support since I think you really knocked this one out of the park. I also wanted to thank all the people (including yourself) that have mentioned the music.

I should point out as well that you wrote some of the music yourself and did an excellent job putting together a temp score. You are a man of many talents.

Here's wishing you the best of luck at the fest.

Neal

Thanks Neal! I couldn't be happier with the score, especially the big exorkism scene to the end. Still freaks me out. About the temp score... I always feel like I want to preserve the movie for the composer to see it without any temp score, so that they can come up with something without being steered by the temp track, but Neal encouraged me to temp it, as he only had one shot at it due to time restraints. It turned out to be a very good thing I did, because I didn't really know what I wantd until I tried some things over it. I've suggested this to other people here, and it's truely amazing what it does- Take any piece of music, and play it over any scene. Try weird stuff that you would never think would work, and inevitably, you will discover something. I'm lucky to have a giant music library in iTunes so I can play the video and skip around till a song clicks. Soundtracks of similar movies are especially helpful. I temp'd Anti De Presence with a bunch of music from The Exorcist and Hellraiser.

The other thing that happens when you discover a great temp score is that you suddenly want to reshoot the scene (or entire movie). This was the case with the big seance. I found some bombastic choral music that worked very well, and layed in some thunder and wind sound FX that I liked a lot, and then I wanted to reshoot the scene to match. What we should've done is had all the crews hands in the lights, creating swirling shadows and flashing lightning. (something I could do in post perhaps...uuhmmm NATE? FX GURU?)

If I would've found this music BEFORE shooting, we would've done it. Another reason to have music in mind before you even shoot. (would've been a fun this to play on the set too)

i actually notice many continuity issues on the first viewing.
1. like the crane shot in the start one shot he wasn't holding the bible..the next shot he was
2.the shot with him leaning the chair toward him

Glad you loved it. In response to your continuity comments- 1. HUH? I see that he has the bible is both shots. He's holding it a little differently when we cut to the overhead shot. I had to work the editing magic to get that scene to work at all, due to major time-restraints when we shot it. The others I could probably adjust and make them better, but my feeling is that most people don't even notice, so why bother reconform my massive sound mix. Major PITA.
In general though, I work on the philosophy that if people notice those little things then you've got much bigger problems with the movie anyway, so I tend to be somewhat lax about continuity, as you've pointed out. Also, I will use the take with the best performance over the take with the best continuity/focus EVERY time.

Good job.

Yeah! Jason and Andrew worked really hard to perfect their characters. I'm very pleased with their performances. I will say that REHEARSALS were key to this. If you could've seen them at the first rehearsal. :zombie_smiley: (no offense guys) It was then that I realized what a difficult and nuanced scene "the big middle part" is.

I will do a B&W cut after the fest. That's a good idea, and I was wondering that myself. Quite a few people have mentioned how much they like the colors, so I don't know... Try it and see, I guess.

Thanks! Chris Shumway did a great job designing the set, and thanks to the crew that helped paint and dress it. It really throws you for a loop. I'd love to know which cuts bothered you. I've lost all perspective after seeing it so many times.

Thanks for your detailed comments. I agree with your critiques, and I'll work to fix them, and try not to make those mistakes in the future. Most mistakes were simply a result of time contraints. We shot the porch scene and walking up the stairs in one furious two-hour shoot. (Three big camera setups) The living room scene and the kitchen scene were all done in ONE day. I wanted two, but schedules wouldn't allow it. (The down side of using talented actors involved in many other projects.)

I'm glad the story worked for you. That's what I was working the most to accomplish with this movie- a story that is both enjoyable and can be understood by all. Films are ALL about story-telling to me, and I managed to suppress my geek-side enough to focus on the story and not the cool technical stuff.

Response to SPOILER *****
Highlight to read SUPER SPOILER

My original idea was that these guys, and their story is all in the girls head, played out with her dolls, hence, the wierd set, stiff body movements, . The question then becomes, "Why and how would a little girl come up with a story like this?" If you notice, the girls father is wearing the same shirt and pants that "Jack", the drug user is wearing. That was intended to allude to the notion that the girl gets this story from her father, who is alone, (mother has died) depressed, and takes antidepressants, and maybe other drugs that cause hallucinations. The girl perhaps misinterprets this drug-taking as a bad thing (it might be), and thus plays out the story as such.

However-- --- There is a bigger Twilight Twist that came about purely by accident. I'm going to spell it all out here how I see it, so SEE THE MOVIE FIRST... please.

First off, as I have tried to mention in other posts that if these guys are dolls being moved by a girl with only two hands, and they are both moving, where do the other shadows of hands come from? I hope those DO play as hand shadows? Also, when we tilt up after the transition from real to dollhouse (or is it the other way around) you will notice that the girl doesn't have her hands down in there (and she has that creepy look on her face) When she leaves, says, "I'm gonna get you", repeating the line from the seance, and then says, "It's evil", as she closes the door. (I think I need to bring those lines up in the mix btw) Then as we tilt down and do the whole freaky reveal thing, the dolls start moving by themselves at the end. I think they DO move by themselves, and she "plays with them" but still controls them to a certain degree. This is the part that is still open to interpretation, but I think adds a nice little button twist, or "refrigerator question" as JDS labeled it.

And she'd need three hands why?

Sean, are you kidding? I thought that "Exorkism" line was brilliant!!

Robbie

SPOILERS:

No, I wasn't kidding at all. The line took me out of the film completely.

1) the filmmaker had generated really good tension and creepiness--the line suddenly veers towards comedy, and I didn't feel I was in a comedy

2) the characters are quite authentic. One's a junkie whose life might be at stake from some sort of haunting. The other is a drug dealer who has inadvertently stumbled into the same jeopardy. This is great stuff. And then the character asks if the dealer can perform an "exorkism." This is completely inauthentic. The character isn't a child. Or an idiot. Everyone knows the correct pronunciation of exorcism. Who would ever say "exorkism"?

3) I guess if it's from the child's POV (playing with the dollhouse), then she might not know the correct pronunciation of exorcism. But then I gotta wonder how she knows about junkies and dealers who bring drugs hidden inside bibles. ;-) And we just don't know anything like this yet. If it's a "tell" or a clue to the final reveal, it should be handled differently.

4) The line is not funny. Granted, funny is very subjective.

Only giving you my extra thee cents cuz you asked if I was serious, and I was. I thought it was a great short, with the exception of a couple of these tonal shifts to comedy. Same with suddenly grabbing the crystal ball out of nowhere. It became inauthentic and slapstick when I didn't feel as though I were in such a film. I felt like I was in a horror film. Can you imagine in the movie The Exorcist if a character had come to perform an exorkism and then "magically" presents a crystal ball from behind a closet door? It would feel like the wrong moment in the wrong movie. That would work if Austin Powers were conducting an exorcism.

Maybe the point is that subtle choices can really alter the experience for the audience.

Great film over all. One of the best of the fest.

THIS time (unlike my timefest entry) I guarantee that you will understand everything in the end... The whole time I was writing I always asked myself the same question: "Will Edgen say, 'I don't get it'" If the answer was NO, I started over.

Back to present time-

It seems that I achieved my goal, and there was no confusion on your part, at least on the "surface" story? Thanks for the comments. Always enjoy your work.

The "Exorkism" line was meant to be another clue that makes you go "WTF?". The idea is that it is said how a little girl might say it after hearing it once, and in fact, our little actress said it exactly like that when we asked her to. It wasn't meant to be funny, but if you think it is, then I guess that's a personal opinion. The Ball and the Candle thing has the same idea. Theses are props that she has right there, and so needs no time to produce them. I think most people have felt that it is the biggest WTF moment, and really heightens the Twilight aspect of the film. My feeling is that if you don't know if you should laugh, be afraid, or some other emotion, that's perfect for this genre, as is keeps you unsettled, off-balance, and generally wondering What THE HELL is going on here. Like AmyO said- "The clues are all there all along", and not till the reveal is it clear why things are as they are. If you think it should be handled differently, you might find a lot of objection, because many here have latched on to those specific moments as being ones that stood out for them. I'm willing to listen though.

Glad you still enjoyed it, and thanks for clarifying your comments.

Overall i loved the film but had two issues with it both of which were mentioned before.

1) I also did not like the "excorkism" line, certainly not a big deal but its those little things that make all the difference
2) I did not understand why a little girl would make a story about a drug deal, then I read your post explaining the matching outfit of the father. I went back and now it all makes sense, but I would have tried to make that connection easier to make for the viewer.

I see that some people didn't like the exorkism bit, but was it still effective as another WTF moment? I hope so.

I didn't exactly intend for the reason "why" the girl would come up with such a story to come across, it was merely alluded to. It's a deeper layer that is not really necessary to know, and I felt it wasn't good to try and explain every layer of the story, except the obvious surface story. The question does however, bring up an important message that I had in mind, and I try to include some type of message in every film I make. The message here is this: I think we often underestimate the depth of a child's understanding, and therefor we might be too casual sometimes with the things we show them. They're like sponges that absorb everything, even when it seems like they are not paying attention, and it's especially crucial, IMO, when drugs are involved, even if they're prescription drugs, to explain it to them properly. I don't know what "properly" means, and I wouldn't tell anyone how to raise their kid, (I don't have any so what do I know?) but most of the "bad" habits I've seen kids display seem to stem directly from their parents. I include my own bad habits as well. -End Tim's preachy soapbox minute.

Thanks for the comments and glad you loved it!

Am slowly making my way through these. I thought this was a very very nice take on an original episode. I think it's very impressive that you used the episode as a springboard for your own story. Will watch again and try to come up with stuff to criticize. But overall I felt like you nailed the theme, and all of the pieces worked pretty well together.

I liked the preacher guy especially. I think the camera likes him a lot.

Wow, great movie! I wish it could've been longer because it was fun to watch. The things I liked best were the music, the set with its minature version, and I thought the actors had some great lines. Something for improvement might be to have a few less unanswered questions, because it seemed like there was more to it than just a twist in reality (which is why I wish it could've been longer). Overall, though, really good!

Yay! So glad to hear you say that. What was the biggest difference this time? I took two solid months to write Anti De Presence, instead of two solid days for Enchanted Notes of a Time Traveling Piano.

I would say, that BY FAR, the writing is the most important element of a movie. I've never made a movie with (what I consider) a good script, and it has always showed. I was determined this time to have a good script, and I bugged every friend and family member for ideas and critiques. After the 6th or 7th draft they were pretty tired of it and stopped responding, luckily, Alex Whitmer gave me a critique that really switched on my light bulb. It was truly a script written by committee.

As for this noise in the video. I shot it on the dvx, but I've always felt it's been pretty noisy. Perhaps I got a lemon, or the settings I use produce a lot of noise, or my DIY adapter screen causes it... not sure. I'm going to play with it. I used to have the dvx100a, and I thought it had less noise than the "b" I have now, but isn't it supposed to be the other way around? I'd love to upgrade sometime.... to FILM....mmmmm. Forget this video crap and adapter-shmapters. Gimme some juicy celluloid... yeahhhh.:tongue::tongue::-Happy(DBG):

Really interesting project to work on. I think the quality of posts on this thread speak volumes about the filmmaker. Everyone's thoughts have peeled back many of the layers of this fantastic short and provoked genuine discussion about concept and theme without having to delve too far into technical missteps.

There were times I just had to trust that Tim knew what he was doing (like when I had to commit to speaking the line, "Give me a crystal ball and a candle." I mean...come on...Really?!) How do you approach that as an actor when all you can think about is how ridiculous it must sound or how convenient it all seems? How do you allow yourself to make that moment truthful? Tim got me to let go of my ego, trust that the moment would have a payoff, and commit to it.

If our goal as artists is to be storytellers; to take an audience on a journey that's leaves them in a different place than where they started, to affect, to provoke thought...then I think Tim has knocked this one out of the park.

Well done.

This is one of my favourites (er have I reviewed this already!?) No no... anyway!

I was struck with the dark humour, and genuine sense of unease and macabre! Its an incredibly effective mix which is pulled off very well. I have watched this film several times, finding it enjoyable.

The acting was convincing, and the production value impressive. The cinematography worked well to convey the mood and strangeness of the piece.

Sorry if thats a bit bland - i think like others, having the voice of the girl at the end of the film be a little clear (with her passing remarks) would be good - and charles manso's cameo at the end scared me too!

This was very well done and the ending took me by surprise, but fit very well. The style and tone grabbed my interest (reminded me of early Tim Burton slightly). The shadows on the wall were absolutely brilliant.

The biggest thing I wasn't really a fan of was the digital look. Just from the fantasy style of the room and the rest of the tone, it really felt like something that should've been shot on film. Rarely does it bother me shooting on digital, but here I noticed it more for some reason. Not that it wasn't well-lit, just had that digital feel.

The acting wasn't distracting for me and the characters were interesting, but I did feel that it could be improved upon.

Overall, very good effort and definitely shows a lot of promise for unique future films.

This was FUN FUN FUN FUN! Halfway through I was so into it I grabbed for my beer in deee-light. The drug dealer is one of the best actors in this fest, solid. Great charisma. The other guy did very well too. The music was spot on, location was perfect. At times your edits threw me off, there were some moments where I think you were trying to match actions and they didn't quite match. Also the light wasn't consistent on some of the shots, some of them were darker than others.

Overall great job man. This is in my top ten.

Thanks! I'll have you all know, Charles Manson is one of the nicest guys you would ever meet.

I AGREE. Maybe I can shoot on film next time....??? :cheesy: I'd have to get my shooting ratio down.. and get some investors... and a DP that knows what they're doing... and .... oh my. It might have to wait.

Thanks for the review.

Glad you liked it. It IS better with beer
Hear that Mr. Davidson? ...one of the best actors in the fest... Yee -yeah. Funny thing is, I found him through a family member, and he was living in town, not 5 minutes away from me, for like a YEAR, and I didn't know. He has since moved farther away, but not too far...
hey Gabriel, you're in Boston now eh? I think things will be much better now that you're out of Palin-Paradise, and it's only 4 hours to VT when you need a scenic location. BTW- Those lighting shifts you're seeing are nothing more than my color correction anti-skillz. I need big-time help in that area. Thanks for the comments y'all!

yeehawnow...you get the slow clap man...awesome short...really. It grabbed immediately and just when it seemed to be going a little far (get me a crystal bal and a candle), the payoff came and I was blown away. Awesome work.

Your actors did an excellent job. they had great delivery and chemistry. The shots, the lighting, all of it. This is definately on of my favs this fest. I'm definately going to keep watching to see what you do next. Great film man!

I loved this. I didnt get the reference to the girl at the start and all the way through I was expecting her to appear through the door or something as a prank. The ending was a complete surprise and worked really well. Although im not sure about the dolls moving after the girl left.

Love the dessing of the room.

The photography and editing was just right in that it allowed complete immersion in the story without letting the viewer know that it was a film. It pulled me right in.

Excellent work. Well done.

DEAL. That would be the most music bang-for-your-buck ever. (or is that just the first payment.)

Awesome score Neal, and thanks for making it happen at the last minute. Next time I'll get you that real orchestra I promised-

Thanks for all the great comments/criticisms, its definitely been interesting seeing what works and what doesn't. Seeing how different people interpret a film is one of the best parts of the film process. I'm just happy people liked my cardboard decorating skills!

The DVX community is a great place to be part of and I can't wait to watch all the finalist's films again. This really is the time to feel good about your work.

Thanks for the support everyone,

I just realized--- Anti De Presence was the only finalist film shot on the DVX. We should get a few extra points for that, yeah?

the idea is kind of old and getting cliche'. i see this at film school all the time. army men, cowboys and indians.

although your execution was good.

Hey everyone,

If your interested in seeing some "Anti De presence" behind the scenes footage check out these videos. I apologize for the sloppy links, still trying to learn how to embed video.

Edit:

Tim will put those videos up later, still need to learn how to use the forums obviously.

Mojo,

read this post by Jason (don't know why it wasn't stickyed):

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=1439349&postcount=1

but it's pretty easy, just take the "number" that motionbox gives you (in your case, the ee9fdbb1191ee464 for the first) and put the "[MO_VIE]" and "[/MOV_IE]" embed tags around it. (remove underscores :))

like this:

ee9fdbb1191ee464

Considering I usually enjoy watching behind the scenes docs more than the movies they are about, I'm glad to see you put something together for this. I thought I was going to have to wait until the Ultimate Edition DVD boxed set.

That DVD boxed set you speak of will also include the directors commentary, however ridiculous it might sound.

Screeing the movie tonight at the local coffee shop for the cast, crew, friends, and family. I'd invite other dvxusers, but is there anyone else in Vermont...besides cows?

It will be nice to see it in front of an audience.

The screening was a lot of fun last night. A big success! We had a great crowd turn up and they wanted to watch it twice. Yay!
It was such an unnecessary ego booster.. :) but exciting to see it with an audience.

sorry... brought the camera but forgot to take pictures. I can't wait for tomorrow!
