Colin,
Did you mask out duplicate layers for your depth? How exactly did you do this?

Nice Job.
Metro- alot of photshop work is key here. Most likely he cut up his images in PS and cloned the bgs and brought them into AE.
Hope that makes sense.

Nice work se7,
I like this style and the red and BW images. There is a real sense of depth.
The only thing I did not love so much was the end graphic and I would just stick with one or maybe two fonts.
Good show , Keep it up .
Thanks guys! Metro, triplej96 is dead on with the technique... I just used the lasso tool to cut out the layers (new layer > via cut) and brought the PSDs into After Effects. Then, just turn on the 3D layer switch and now you can position the different elements in all axes.
Hopefully that makes enough sense... really simple, but getting your camera positioning all set up is usually what takes the most time.
Everts, I think I agree with ya on the last graphic... but the Hollywood 10 were screenwriters, so I wanted that "type on" effect like an old typewriter.
Cheers guys!
I'd love to hear some more comments, criticisms, remarks...
Thanks to those who have already watched it and commented...

Just watched it again and it doesn't get old. You really did a good job with this; the music, the pace, the length, the use of color with black and white....really, this is very professional work.

wow, loved it.
the 2.5 effect is something that makes a huge impact and i have yet to perfect it in practice.
that effect will never go out of style and networks continue to use it in combo with lower 3rds, splash and colorized effects.
nice work.
hope i can post mine soon.

thanks Metro for the second-watch!
And thank you Tin Man! I'd love to see your video when it is completed! That'll be cool...
Thanks guys,

That is so good! Wow. If only I could do that...
Btw, what does trapcode do?
Thanks!!
Hey thanks crzyns... it wasn't too hard to do, actually! Just a bit time-consuming...
Trapcode is (in my opinion) not only one of the best particle generators, but also one of the best plug-ins for After Effects. The portion with the 3D red particles as the camera flies around the "Jordan Chai" credit was done by the Particular plug-in.
The reason I love it so much, is not only the huge array of settings that you can adjust to match your exact wants... it's the versatility of it. You can use it for almost any visual effects shots to add realistic atmospheric effects.
If you only purchase one plug-in for After Effects, I'd say go with Particular. (Check out trapcode's site for more info on it)...
Thanks again for watching and commenting!

Really Good!
You should do a tutorial! It would rule.....
2.5 is kind of the in-between of two dimensional and three dimensional. (ie, using 2D elements in a 3D environment). I like this effect because I think it has an interesting feel. You can tell that those images were all 2D, but there was that 3D sense about them. Thanks for the comment!
Ogrus, I was thinking about doing a tutorial, but I kinda thought it would be a waste of time, if most people already know how to do this effect...
However, if there are a few people who want me to record a tutorial, I'd be more than happy to... (when I have the time).
So just let me know and thanks for checking it out!

Just wanted to say your work looks really good! It employs techniques I'm in the process of learning myself. But this looks really professional. I could see this on Discovery Channel. Thanks for posting and providing inspiration.

nice, very riding giants and lucid dreams, those two are the best usage i've seen of this technique and this is up there with them 10 points.
the only things i can say is possibly use a little more of your depth of field, i'm not sure if i saw it in the bit with colin at 08. but putting it in slightly will just add to the 3d effect. and possibly use some lighting with shadows and have your light source move slightly. but it looks very good. and i'm sure that with a director spitting over your shoulder you'll make some great stuff.

That's brilliant! The multi-layer look is not new but used to great effect here. I agree that the black/white/red thing works to add life.
The camera moves at the beginning and end look a bit jerky but that could have just been the YouTube playback.
I too watched it twice. Nicely done.

Not to be a harsh critic, but I'm not really digging this piece. This style has been done time and time again, and you have just rehashed it without adding anything. Your camera moves are erratic and linear, there is practically no easing from one move into the next. My guess is that you used a lot of keyframes where you probably only needed two to pull off the move. The Particular stuff is out of place, it has no real reason to be there. As well as your flourish, which covers up your name in z space, which just looks odd.
A note of the type as well, you have 3 different fonts throughout this piece, and you change fonts mid sequence for your credits. On top of that, none of your fonts really compliment each other. You open up with thin wedged serif font then follow that with a heavy, very geometric sans serif. Then at the end, back to the serif, with a ubiquitous typewriter font , probably Courier. When picking type you need to focus on picking something that compliments the piece you're working on. Do a little research into the time period, subject matter...find out what's relevant. That era of American history has a rich visual aesthetic, so you should be in no short supply of good type choices.
Overall, it's very light, with little texture. If you're going to use all that negative space, use it effectively. Right now, it's very random with little order and cohesion from one segment to the next. There is not visual cue tying it together, and with the lack of good solid, fluid camera moves that only highlights the disconnect even more.
