View Full Version : Hit by car! Need damage estimate!

Long story short, I was hit by a car while filming with my DVX100B.

Both camera and I went over the hood. :(

To get a copy of the police report I need to provide a damage estimate on the camera. All the local shops around me cannot give me a number, and I can't find a camera shop that will just give me an estimate, I don't want it repaired yet.

Damage:
Focus mechanism (the more you zoom, the slower focus operates)
Body (tripod plate ripped out, scratches, tear in eyepiece rubber / scratch on viewfinder)
Tape drive (After thorough head cleaning, tape device still produces glitches. Sand may have entered tripod plate hole)

Does anyone know where in PA / NJ / DE / NY I could get a damage estimate?

I've always kept it in a hard case, it kills me to have a trashed camera now.

Me getting hit because it's golden footage:

Whoa dude! That is crazy footage!

I love how she instantly started making excuses...did she ever apologize or ask if you were ok???

Did you get banged up?

WOW! Where the heck did she come from? You were panning from the direction she came from but I never saw her.

Was she the white car that you pass early on? If so, she had to back out and turn around (seems to fast for that), otherwise she had to come from around that bend, so not always facing the sun.

Either way, the first thing out of her mouth was "I couldn't even see you" ? Man, not even a "OMG! Are you alright?!"

Crazy ... hope you are alright! :)

You shouldn't have been standing in the middle of the road. IT IS YOUR FAULT

I took a trip to the hospital while she enjoyed a free dinner after leaving the scene without giving her info.

Ha, shut up Steve.

"The sun was in my eyes...I couldn't see anything"

Hmmm...then maybe she could explain why she was still operating her car? I mean if you can't see where are GOING, then why are you GOING in the first place.

Dude..that footage is Classic...and her response was ...well, people never cease to amaze me.

What if you were 2 year old who got away from her mom for a split second, What if you were a 50 foot ravine.

Bummer about your DVX...keep us posted. I hope you were still able to work one your project...it certainly looke interesting untill the Sun Worshiper made you bite the dust.

If she left with out giving you her info, its a hit and run. She is going to the SLAMMER! I wonder if the sun will be in her eyes then?

Anyone find it funny that she uses that as an excuse when she is wearing sunglasses? I bet she was not looking, ipod, radio, purse or something like that. Seems like the only reason she would instantly try to tell you why.

I'd print out the still of her face and make flyers asking people to call you with information about that woman. Post them around the town.

I can't believe she took off.
Ridiculous.

Turn in a bid for a new camera... then go from there about the repair bills...

Sorry to hear about your DVX and about you getting hit by a car and about the chick getting away. This sucks all around.

What doesn't suck is the footage. :)

We may be able to help you out by giving you an "estimate" for described damage. However, to get it repaired, you would really need someone to evaluate it because if it took a fall, who knows what may be wrong in there.

Just let me know if you need me to help you out.

Too bad you weren't a 50 foot ravine.

Fixed it for you rfrink!

I wouldn't even bother with repairs. It's replacement time.

Those crappy Utah drivers...

Just noticed that this is a month or old - I'd be interested in the outcome. Do you have footage of her leaving?

RedlineHeart sent me the extended version of the posted video when we sent him the repair estimate and it's shocking that these people are reacting the way they do. It ends up that it's a man and woman in the car and there young son in the back seat soaking all of this in so he can screw people later on in life.

Then RedlineHeart and his film crew follow the lady to a restaurant and they proceed to tell one of the people in the film crew "You're not even a person!" :)

I respect RedlineHeart for not turning this whole thing into an outright brawl.

"Unbelievable" is all that could come out of my mouth when I saw this unfold. I sure do hope that he can get a new camera out of it.

Please make sure you do the following immediately while everything is still fresh, (a lot of time has already passed) also have the police report handy. I'm serious, get off the computer and do this right now:

Luis is right. Make a flyer using some of the stills saying exactly what happened and when and letting people know if they have information to call you (use your cell number). Also send the footage to the news (her face is on the tape and this is a hit and run). Make dupes and show it all to the news and send it to the papers. Someone will play this as it's a local story. You simply want to find the hit and run driver who did this to you. Someone else may even decide to help especially if you were doing a student film. Play this well and you'll get compensated and they'll get what's coming to them.

This person seems to be either very rich or very well connected or at least think they are - proceed with caution. That statement equals "I think I'm above you and the law." The first part of that tape is usable in court because they knew you were taping when they hit you. The "I couldn't see in the sun with shades" excuse isn't going to fly. (At least it shouldn't).

If she left with out giving you her info, its a hit and run. She is going to the SLAMMER! I wonder if the sun will be in her eyes then?

Exactly!

RedlineHeart got a nice zoom in on the license plate. The people who hit him was on vacation, or so they said.

Even if the police catch them, it should go all over the news anyway to show people that there is no excuse for being idiots.

Woah thats a bummer man, your cam getting hit by a car isn't exactly a normal occurrence (er....I think so lol). There could be a few folks on here who could prove me wrong, but I hope not.

Hopefully everything gets worked out for you.

Can somebody confirm that this was NOT a public street but a driveway of some sort ? this can be of importance.....I also think its strange that he has not sought juridical action on this story! it should be broadcast on all tv channels !

True. Not to mention that is a parking lot. What could she have been doing? Who knows, but whatever it was it distracted her and her attitude doesn't help. A friend of mine was hit by an SUV backing out of a lot. The woman was on her cellphone and slammed into my friend. My friend went down hard, totally destroyed her poor Apple titanium (one of the original ones that were super tough).

It appears to be a resort or such parking lot. Southern Utah has tons of areas that are not paved and only graveled. Pretty typical.

I'd be we see 10 - 15 accidents a year in SLC that are a result of the sun in someone's eyes. Too many people think they can just drive blind.

Not having seen the entire tape, I'd definitely go after her. Unless you were stalking her afterwards, she hit, she ran and you followed her. Nothing absurd or against the law about that.

Sad that people have to be such douches.

Just noticed this got bumped...

I emailed the officer twice very early on with all the details, no response. Left a voicemail for the police report lady, never called back. Finally got in touch with her and she said to fax everything in. Andrew helped out by providing a damage estimate, and I faxed that in to the Moab police department as told over a week ago... Getting fed up with this whole thing, calling on Monday to figure out what's going on.

The parking area is below. Not so much a parking lot, but a wide area that branchs off to the little lodges. I was standing close to a fence and not in the middle of it.

http://mikespock.com/aka38.jpg

The woman was wearing sun glasses and had her visor down. It's one thing to be an accident and she was blaming me for standing there. However it's another thing to hit someone, yell at them, and leave the scene.

She hit me then started babbling. Drove to her lodge that was nearby, tried blowing me off. Some people started getting involved, her husband and son came out of the lodge and they ignored me and my request for their insurance information. They said they had dinner reservations at the lodge restaurant, said I shouldn't have been standing in the road, and pulled out.

Someone in our party and another camera guy followed them to the restaurant and approached them. I walked up after inspecting my gear. They asked if we were serious, and basically yelled and blew us off even after I asked for their information again.

Management came out, instructed us to turn off the camera. From what I'm told, they got free dinner while I sat and filled out a police report, then waited around for the police to return after they left?????

I went to the hospital and missed out on filming that night. Cut and bruise on my chest, was diagnosed with contusions. Had muscle pain all over for the rest of the trip, and my back still hurts.

I've been told not to make a huge scene and put out all the media about the accident as that would hurt my case.

The more I zoom in with the camera, the slower the camera focuses. Mic input 1 has died on me. I have to velcro my camera to my tripod. I have a school portfolio to get done, and this is my job. I'm sick of this crap and it's taking too long.
