mini dv tapes at the airport

i'm flying out for a trip this sunday, and bringing my hv20 along. any reason i should be concerned about putting my mini dv tapes through the x-ray? should i put them in a lead shielded bag (for film), or should they be ok without it?

i'm sure i've probably done this before without even thinking about it, but this time around i'm going to meet family in spain, and some of the family member are around 100 years old with lot of stories to tell. i would hate to lose anything i get over there.

If you can, BACK your tapes up in any case, get your self some cheap hard drive (external ones)

Each tape is about 11 Gigs so if you get hold of a chunky 320 Gig hard drive, you should be able easly dump 29 tapes on that.

Not sure about the x-ray.

unfortunately i won't have my laptop or hard drive with me in order to travel very light, but it looks like the tapes will be fine. just wanted to triple check since there will be some important sentimental footage on the tapes.

Yea I know the feeling,

I still have some 8mm tapes, arrg I need to get an 8mm video player so I can digitize them, I have some really really important family videos..

Also I read that if you have a tape that has not been used over 3 years, you should rewind it to the beginning and fast forward it to the end. eek I haven't done this yet!!

Yep, no worries about x-rays with tapes. I've traveled with miniDV and BetaSP tapes several times without any problems.

iv been in airports many times with my dvx,
yep and im checked out time to to time,tapes are ok i just go in now ask nuthing keep going be nice and polite!!,
yeah i fly a few times a year so cal! or where ever now last was seattle!!
dont bring wine it gets dumped!! the camera usaly gets checked out by security but it makes it thru!! ive had no probs with xrays,just dumb security mostly!!!
