View Full Version : Does the HVX have trouble handling red?

Here's something I've noticed in the past and on a project I'm working on right now.

I've been working on a short horror film, and visually it sort of draws from Italian horror, especially the work of Mario Bava. I've been using some harsh red lighting, and I've used red in the opening titles. One thing I've noticed is that the red elements seem to have some heavy pixilation around the edges.

Has anyone experienced this?

Ive experienced this as well but I think mine was due to Quicktime/Apple's piss poor handling of reds.

Are you on a Mac?

I am. So maybe I should try exporting to WMV and see what happens?

There's a huge thread on this here.

Do a search on it.

It basically was unresolved. Someone thought it was FCP related. Others never experienced it.

Its good to shoot with your chroma in camera way down to mute the colors and then bring them back up in post in my experience but I'm on a PC.

I was under the impression that red was tough for any digital video to handle. I remember problems with it using the Canon XL-1.

You are totally right. with the XL1, red was an absolute killer for focus and image softness. The HD handles Red 100 times better than DV, but as peope have noted.. there's a quicktime issue with reds and you see stepping and jaggies and that's what sucks about it.

We shoot a lot of flowers and the purer the red the worse it is, and that's in HD.
