View Full Version : Lagging After Opening mxf Files in Adobe Premiere Pro

Hi guys,
After copying my P2 card over to an external hard drive, I've tried opening the mxf files in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3. However, whenever I try and play any of the files there is a significant lagging in the motion, I'm not sure how to correct this when I'm trying to edit. The clips play back normally on the camera itself, so I'm wondering if something is getting lost in copying the files over to an external hard disk. I'm using a Maxtor 1TB and I'm using firewire. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Try the files on an Internal drive (as a test)

What kind of "lagging"? Shouldn't be an issue.
Did you copy the P2 folders over with all of the folders and files and with the file structure completely intact?

You say "opening". Did you use the "Import" command (you must have ver 3.1), select the VIDEO folder and select "import folder"? Because I only use external USB drives and don't have the problem you describe.

On a Mac or a PC?

I have a PC, and I'm not sure if I have version 3.1 or not, but I can't see why it would matter as Adobe Pro is supposed to be fine with importing HD files. I imported using the Adobe Bridge.

You must have ver 3.1 or better of Premiere Pro to import the P2 MXF file structure properly, using the built-in File|Import command. (I don't know what Adobe bridge is.)
Added: OK, I see that I have Bridge in my CS3 suite, but I still can't tell what it is supposed to do. And I don't thnik it knows how to properly handle MXF files.

PP 1.5 will recognize your .mxf files, but you have to drag them from the video folder. It brings them on the time with both audio and video.
What exactly do you mean by "lagging"?
Does the video take a second to play and then plays fine, or
does the video play back in a stuttering fashion, or
something else?

The video just moves along as if in slow motion, and it doesn't play back that way when I'm using the P2 viewer. In addition, I've found that I need to import the video and the audio of the mxf files separately. And the main purpose of bridge is just to help you organize the files on your computer, and I checked, Pro CS3 is supposed to be compatible with mxf files.

You must have 3.1 or later, period, or you won't be able to work with P2 files. You should not have to import the audio separately. I ask again, did you copy over the P2 folders with the whole file structure intact?
Did you shoot with variable frame rates? If so, was it in the 720pN modes, or in the P modes?
Bridge doesn't support P2 files.

I copied over the entire file (with all the folders) and I did shoot in 720.

OK, but is it variable frame rate footage? Is it in the P mode or the N mode?

I did copy over the P2 folders with the whole file structure, and I shot in 720.
