I'm sure I'm overlooking something, but I can't seem to figure out how to dub my footage from the p2 card to a tape. I shot something in 1080i/60i and want to store it on a mini dv tape.
Here's what I'm doing-
-I have the card in the slot, turn the camera on with the tape switch on.
-I press the mode button to switch to playback, then hold it again for a coouple seconds to open up dubbing mode.
-This is what I don't understand. In the manual, it says to press the THUMBNAIL button to close the thumbnail display. What is the thumbnail button? Is that the menu button? Then it says to select DUBBING SETUP, which I don't see. Also the icons numbers are red and I can't get them to be black.
Any ideas? I appreciate any feedback! Thanks!

There's a button on the top that says audio dub/thumbnail, to the upper left of the menu navigation buttons.
You'll also need to change your playback mode to 1080/60i, which it apparently isn't in yet (which is why your clips are red).

So, I'm wondering... if you can dub to tape from the P2 cards... in the camera... is it then possible to:
take an empty p2 card,
copy back the card data (originally shot at 720p24pn) to it using my laptop,
and then use the hvx200 to dub to tape,
and then using that tape (now DV footage) in the camera, capture via firewire to my g4 PPC with FCP 5.0.4,
and then edit the now DV footage in FCP 5.0.4?
I just really want to edit something and haven't made the leap to FCP 5.1 or 6 yet. (baby steps)

Yes, but why bother? Just use fcP 5.0.4's File->Import->Panasonic P2 command, and edit the high-def footage directly.

Uh, 'cause I've been having issues with this, I think. Like no video only audio. I think it has something to do with my QT Pro not really being Pro. I don't know for sure. I can recreate the problems later and get back to you on this but I remember some "you don't have the right codec" errors.
UPDATE: Here is a link where I described the problems I was having:

If you have Final Cut Pro, then you have QuickTime Pro. It is part of the install.
As I recall, you are running 5.0.4.
What exact Mac are you using: a PPC or an Intel Mac?

So, Barry,
When I try to import P2 files into FCP using File -> Import -> Panasonic P2, I get the following error:
"One or more P2 clips failed to import, probable incomplete or corrupt clips."
If I just import the folder into FCP, I get:
"File Error: 78 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 16 unknown."
Then I see the file structure, just as it would be on a card. I can hear the audio clips (mxf files), if I play them in the Viewer or the Canvas/Timeline.
video clips are black in the Viewer and "unrendered" in the timeline. Nothing happens when I try to render the clips.
On my system, if I try to play P2 clips using P2CMS, I see the icons but they play black video and I can hear the audio.
Again, these are P2 files stored on a G-Raid2 1T external connected with FW800.
If this helps the "MemoList" shows a white "screen" with black top and bottom bars.
When restarting FCP, and it comes up in the last easy setup you have set, which in this case is DVC PRO HD 720p, I get the error:
"Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card."
I get the same error if I try to put a clip into the timeline and export as a quicktime movie.
QT version is 7.5.
When I try to play converted files, I get this message from QT, "Additional software is required for QuickTime to playback this media." And I am again able to hear the audio and the video is just black.

Again, do you have the DVCProHD codecs in the HD/Library/QuickTime folder?

What's there is what's stated in the other thread.
So, if anyone can tell me what the codec would look like or where to obtain some, that would be great.

Barry,
When I try to write back to the P2 card, it says it's protected and I can't. How do I get around that?

Well, it looks like I can do it with my PC laptop, which is what I use to download the cards but can't on my mac (G4, which is the one having problems viewing the footage too).
Oh when oh when will I be able to afford an intel mac!

Well the PC way was killing my laptop. Each time it would blow up and restart and no copy was made.
I bit the bullet and bought a MacBook Pro and FCS2. Crossing my fingers....
