Long time reader (well not really)
Frist time poster...

I'm a student... a blonde student... which is why I haven't used the search function here because I really don't know how to phrase the question to get proper results.

Anyway... so my mates and I, well mostly I, got the HVX200 latest model or something. And we've shot somethings, and I edited somethings but it's all most in DV since no money for p2 cards. We're all just kids you know. 20-24 age range. Anyway... so we did little things like small adverts for people here and there mostly internet viral adverts and such nothing fancy and everything turned out well. Colours looked great and decent and magnificent.

One thing we want to do before the summer ends is shoot some timelapses and maybe even some... high speed stuff if it's possible. But I did some reading up on timelapses and it seems they're only mostly possible on the p2. Is there a way to somehow shoot on the DV?

If worst comes to work we can rent out a p2 card for a week for 300$ :(
But again as students it's kinda exepensive.

One of the best places to look for information first is the operations manual.

Time lapse is covered under "Interval recording (INTERVAL REC)", and is only possible by recording to the P2 card. (Page 47 in the 2005 English version of the manual for HVX200P.)

Also keep in mind that interval recording to the P2 is only available in video cam operation mode.

You can shoot intervals on sticks with a decent digital cam.

But on the HVX200, the manual is pretty specific on what is possible.

Yeah I siffed through the manual and figured how to do it via p2, but i thought that maybe they omitted the whole dv thingie and neglected to mention that feature. :(

Thanks though. :D
Looks like I'll be selling some fluids to earn enough money to rent a p2.

I'm thinking of asking if there's a way to record directly to a harddrive or something simmilar or something that isn't labled firestore and doesn't cost an arm. But I'll siff through the board. Thanks for the help. :D

It is not possible to record directly to any standard hard drive. You need some kind of device to take the raw video signal and dump it to the appropriate files -- the Firestore can do this, as can Adobe OnLocation (previously DVRack).

Sorry, but there's no easy way out on this one.

I strongly recomend onLocation, you can attach any firewire camera and record timelapse and animation.

It has a onion skin feature that you are goin to love, among a bunch of very usefull tools.

You can get it for a try here:

PS: It only works under windows, or an Intel WIN Mac.

Good luck.
