I never really paid much attention to the "equivelant to 35mm measurements" of video cameras until i was reading up on the HPX170. It says that it has a "28mm-51mm" lens. This is where I got confused. Because on a Nikon, a 24mm is pretty wide, and although there's not really any distortion, it's also not a very realistic view compared to the human eye. And a 50mm lens is considered a "regular" lens because it's the most realistic compared to the human eye. I've never heard of a fixed video lens where when zoomed out looks like a wide angle, and when zoomed in looks normal. So I must be getting mixed up somewhere.

You're getting the figures mixed up. The HPX170 has a 3.9mm to 51mm lens (actual focal length), which is equivalent to the FOV of a 28mm-364mm lens.

Ohhh ok, that makes more sense. Thank you for clearing that up.

you dont meen its equivilent to say a nikon 364mm lens? Id find that very hard to beleive. Your probably talking about a different kind of lens though so can someone clarify for me as well.

Yes, he means that at wide angle it has the equivalent field of view of a 35mm still camera with a 28mm lens. And at full telephoto it has the equivalent field of view as if you'd put a 364mm lens on that same 35mm camera.
It's a 13x zoom. 13x28mm=364mm.

so if I put a 300mm nikon lens on a red rock on an HVX it will be much longer then the stock lens though right?

Nowhere near as long. The stock lens on the HVX has the equiv. of 423mm, IIRC.
If you zoomed in on the RR then you could make it appear as if it's longer, but when using the 35mm still-camera frame, a 300mm still lens won't be as telephoto as a stock HVX lens at full zoom.

I question this analogy. (not trying to start a fight.... just sharing an observation) Barry.... I beg to differ.... I think the proper terminology would be equivalent "Angle" of view as the field of view is not so equivalent.
Seems like the smaller the sensor/film size the farther the background looks.

Angle of view is the more correct term.
