You need to do a RAM Preview. Button on the upper right that looks like a play button. And you obviously must import footage that has audio.
I would suggest going to www.videocopilot.net and watching their free and awesome tutorials. They have a whole beginner series that will help get you up and running.
I've just started playing around with After Effects and am hooked! It is such a great program!
Good Luck,
Alex

when i press ram preview, it only has sound for the first few seconds. my clip is around 1:50 min. But when i ram preview, the only thing that is green is the first few frames.

if you want to watch the whole thing with audio you should export it. otherwise, if you want to just listen to one section of audio change your work area by going to the first frame you want to hear and hitting "B" for beginning and the last frame you want to hear and hitting "N" for eNd; then ram preview. Good luck with after effects it really is awesome once you get the hang of it.

Hey paki123
I believe you have just found the answer to your other Thread and now realise why you got the answers you got. (except the ones from Barnapkins)

try previewing your comp in half res or even 1/4 res if you are in hd, that way you can ram preview alot more. also if you hold down ctrl (or it could be alt) while you play the comp with the space bar you'll hear the audio as it plays. works if you are dragging the timeline too so you can scrub to the position you want without looking at the waveforms.

If you're looking to get a sense of timing with audio, do all your basic cuts in an editor first. Then export the sequence to After Effects.
The solution isn't cheap, but if you have the budget, look at Automatic Duck. I depend on this for putting together commercials and anything else that needs to be tweaked in AE after the basic cuts are done.
After Effects is great for doing visual effects. But as others have mentioned, it's a terrible editor. As you've experienced, editing requires real-time playback with audio, and AE isn't designed to do that.
