Reserved because Dustin was too much of a poo pooer to give me my own up above.

EDIT(18 AUG 2008, 4:54PM): Until he decided to make me look like a dumb ass by adding me into Tom's spot. :)

EDIT 2: Then he decided to remove me and tom for some stupid cast list or something. Back to aquare one, it looks like.

This space is now ALSO reserved for Tom's something...

Well that's the thing. I didn't know if this was supposed to be the one we discussed or not. Now that I am sure you want me to go through with it, I will. I said I wasn't going to write any more but for you I will make a exception. I am working on one right now (had to put everything on hold for a week or so so I could prepare for school today) but after that I will hop to it, Rogan. :)

Hey guys I guess you can have the Assidental Hitman if you really want it. All you had to do was ask. You didn't have to get all secret code word and all. You have my blessing...J/K of course it would be a dvxuesr first if someone made a parody of a short film that was not even seen yet. Just a thought. Seriously Nick already knows the story. Could be funny.

1st Draft is complete, sent out to my script crew to bleed on it. I like the story, needs some work, but at least I have something down on paper for the fest.

I'd say this is a comedy with a darker twist.

I'm sure the story will flesh out more as the weeks pass by and my script crew gets back with me.

Need to cast this puppy, and work on a shooting date. As of now I'm sure it'll be between Sept. 22nd - Sept 27th.

Location has been picked out. I'll try to get out and get some pics of the location when I can. been kinda rainy the past 3 days and when it rains, I turn into a bear and sleep forever.

I'll work on a poster/banner at some point today.

Though I don't have a title picked out yet, though I'm sure it'll come to me at some point.

Heres to the fest! Good luck to everyone!

I may even have to write up a monologue too, but we will see. I'll get to you. I DID get the second draft, by the way, so that is the one I will read.

Looking good!

I guess I could update everyone on the progress (not that there is much to update)

Script is for the most part finalized. I'm sure as usual there will be some tweeking until then.

On a downside, I've not had any responses to my craigslist post, which is weird last time I posted on craigslist I got like 25 in the first day. I'll try again today and see if I get any responses.

That is all for now, I've been working like a dog, thanks to people leaving and having to fill in. On top of that my 2nd job. I've either been working or sleeping the past 4 days.

Anyhoos, off to work...again...

Nah Nick, no worries. Stick to your 2nd Grade math problems I know they'll be taking up most of your time. Good luck with that buddy we got things covered here on the home front!

as for the start Jason...I blame Penguin. What can I say he loves him some Rogan...now whomever the other person is, I don't blame you for loving you some Rogan.

Matt, "date" went fine. More like watch a movie on HDNet and I'd made din din.

Dustin R. Rogan
08-29-2008, 07:12 AM
its about time that Waco was known for something other than what everyone knows it for...

It was a pleasure working with such a professional the past two days, Dick Campbell. While auditioning his movie, we had time to talk it over, and like I said before he's come aboard the wild adventure of making a movie with me and my crew! I hope he stays sane through the process of filming 2 movies in 1 week. On top of that he has offered his HVX as a second camera so our shooting will go much faster!

Needless to say I'm pleased with the project thus far, now if I can get it cast. I'll be posting to Austin/Dallas sites once Dick gets the linkage to me. (hint...hint...) Maybe have a better outcome than my Craigslist ad.

I'm not quite there yet - I did the craigslist thing, but not too many entries. Today I started emailing all the producers I know. Maybe they know film actors. Alaska has a lot of small production companies, but they specialize in Alaska "stuff", outdoor footage, etc. I don't think there's many film actors in town... we'll see...

Gabriel, there are seveal yahoo film casting groups here in Texas that are very popular. perhaps they have something similar for Alaska, like "Alaska (or Anchorage) Film Casting". good luck.

I think I'll let you find out when you watch it. MUHAHAHA!

That's cool. I actually enjoy the suspense of watching the films without having read the scripts but I like to offer up my ability to read (something that should be more coveted in today's declining culture) in the event that somebody would like me to exercise it along with my ability to give opinions that I have carefully formulated within my mind.

Now, here is The Penguin Challenge, can you say as little as I say in my posts with as many words as I use?

Now, here is The Penguin Challenge, can you say as little as I say in my posts with as many words as I use?
Well that all depends, my flightless fowl friend. Some critics believe that I'm a "never was" "never be as good as". That is to say, that I am a hack. I don't have any talent at all. Though some would say I'm a genius, and don't know it. Now what does that say about myself? My grammar is poor, and my writing skills are lacking. But once I get what is in my head out on camera, the people sing my praises. Or maybe they love a little male ass or ninjas. Or is it the fact that they feel pity upon me? "Look at this guy, at least he tried to be funny" I am an enigma. I have the personality of a phone book when you meet me in person. I have a deep monotone voice, short (5'8") overweight, and have the typical "Directors Beard". But meet me online, and I'm like an ADD teenager that says whatever comes to mind, even if it does not make sense.

I say all this to say...I am Nothing....

That was the original plan but then I got lazy after applying the film grain to a small section to cover up my poorly crafted replacement wall. Where did you find that other picture, Tom? Or did you just have it, waiting for the perfect moment to post it? :)

I know where Dustin got his. He actually has a Penguin stuffed animal, to remind him of me, that he sleeps with each night. It creeps me out a little but I just tell myself he is thinking of some other Penguin that talks...:D

Sleep Walk is a wrap!

The day started out very very smoothly...lets just say us Wacoans have now been officially kicked out of a place, and we didn't go quietly...I almost got into fisticuffs with the owner and the mantince man. But I settled down and appologized to the mantiance man. But in my defense he looked at me wrong and you don't look at Dustin Rogan the wrong way when he's pissed off.

Ok, so it goes down like this, I have to stop by Wal-Mart to pick up a few extra props, no biggy. Give Gary the card to get the hotel room (of which I'd gotten permission from the lady the night before, she said "I don't care what you do in there, just as long as you pay the $40) So great I told her I'd be back the next day about 3pm'sh. Well my actors showed up about 30mins early, to drop one of their cars off and just ride together (because I was off at another location with the other two actors) They told the maid that we'd be back when we come to shoot the movie. Well apparently she thought we're shooting a porno or something...blabs it to her boss, the mantinance man is calling the cops to see if one of my actors cars had be reported stolen...and the maid told Gary and Matt that The "Big guy in Black" was kidnapped by the little guy (those guys being my main actors...then the owner yells some more...Then the maid starts to drag a prostitute saying "she wanna be in you porno" or something like that. Then I show up and we start unloading getting ready to shoot the majority of the movie in the hotel room. THen I get a guy comes into the room unannounced "Who is in charge of this thing" (when you say that...speak with a redneck accent) I said "I am, whats the matter?" "The owner would like to talk to you, he is very spooked about this situation". I said "ok, I'll go talk to him"
So i go to talk to him, and he said, "We do not want anything to do with this!" I said "excuse me?" "This filming you are doing, you will not do it here, we will give you credit, then you have to get out, now" I said, "hold on hold on man, I came in last night when Linda was here, and she said it'd be perfectly alright for us to shoot, here." (i'd explained to her the story of the movie and she said it'd be fine, just pay the money and we're good to go) "This woman has no authority to say anything about this, I am the boss I say yes or no! Now get out" He printed my credit slip, and I asked him to sign it so I could get his name and proof he'd kicked us out and he was "crediting" us. He yelled at me "I will not do this, this is what we do, we credit with this paper, I am not signing anything" Go now!"

ENTER ANGRY DUSTIN, do same scene over again...but with hellfire coursing through his veins... and referring to the one location of Sleep Walk as a $hit hole to the owner...yes in hine sight prolly not the wisest of choices...but yeah he was a dill weed (insert harsher word) I said screw this guys lets go shoot this one scene, then go eat then go find another hotel...we found one about 10miles outside of waco...that little asian lady was a god send compaired to the devil was just with. And to top it all off I got 2 hours of sleep...I am tired...will hopefully post pics up of when I remembered to take them with my phone tomorrow.

So, I'm in the motel room downloading P2 to my laptop, when I find out we've been kicked out, so I say just another five minutes. Well, the squirrel maintenance guy is standing in the door, wanting to know why we're not moving, and I tell him I need just a few more minutes on the computer. He runs over and says "What are you downloading from the TV?" It was too sad to laugh. We joke about the shallow end of the gene pool, but its another thing entirely to wade through it.

Fortunately, Rogan regrouped just fine and we finished the shoot.

So I pretty much went to sleep after I posted this and woke up at 2pm this afternoon...I was dead tired. We were all tired. And I thank my fearless crew of Dick Campbell, Gary French and Matt Bravo for sticking with me through it all. And they didn't b*tch about going over a couple hours when I said we'd be done by 7or8pm. But we got it done!

And my amazing actors, I thank you (if you're reading) They were cool with everything. Going with the flow of having to change hotel rooms that were many miles apart. They were still smiling after it was all said and done.

All in all I think we got a good short here.

ROgan

PS. Mr. Campbell did an amazing job playing the part of the boss in the short! David Wiseman his assistant, always a pleasure to work with! Great job all around.

PSS now time to get to editing (jason call me when you read this so we can get with Dick who has my footage on his harddrive)

and for those who haven't figured it out... this is a serious piece... my other entry (that isn't an entry anymore) will be the sequel to my polished turd you may refer to as TDRP. Once Rodney gets into town (mid Octoberish) we'll be filming all week. And will bring more laughs and more characters into the mix of my chaotic universe!...anyways this thread isn't for TDRP2 so enough about that...don't wanna give too much away. It will happen. I wasn't going to say this, but I figure this is as good a place as any to do so: I had planned a surprise entry for TwilightFest, but it never worked out. It was going to be a making of, similar to TDRP in that sense, and it was going to be funny and absurd (kind of like my posts). I was in talks with a very prominent animator on the boards, but in the end I ran out of time.

Maybe next time...

I actually have a frame grab from the entry Penguin's talking about...

The infamous ass shot:

The young one tries so hard, I remeber when I found him in a meat locker trying to survive. Hanging on to his last tail feather...*tears up* it was a sad, sad sight to see. I look at him now and I'm like a proud papa!

I really dug your last film and hoped you would stay with the ironic humor you nailed in that. Here, the writing at times reached for wit in a Tarantino -esq way (wouldn't an "Ernheart" risk castration? ouch) but this was obviously more dramatic.

My major criticism would be; If you are going to use a macguffin you need strong actors that can build characters around it a la Pulp Fiction and Ronan to fill that hole. I think the performances hurt this one a bit. I do admire the ambition of it all and there was a lot to admire technically. Congrats on getting a film in the fest.

This was fun! I really enjoyed it.

I liked the bar lighting, although some of it was too bright - the main characters were bright bright bright, compared to the rest of the location. Great acting by the two box-holders, all of their lines were delivered just fine. I didn't like the two other characters, very wooden lines, and they didn't look the part - the younger guy with the strange facial hair looked like he had a grudge with the world, ha.

Love how you didn't show us what's in the box. We don't need to know.

Nice work Rogan. Like gabrielflorit said, we don't need to know what's in the box. Although, if I wanted to get all deep and philisophical I could say it was either some device or element that put them in an actual trance, or that the box was full of money or dubloons and the trance that you displayed on film was a metaphor for the manifestation of greed.

Anyway, enough of that. Good production values and nice writing. Actors did fine. Really have no problems with your entry. I enjoyed it . Good job!

Nice work. I was excited to see if he would should at the end or not, it was very suspenseful. I like the camerawork on images of the box. I think the casting is a little weak and it's a complicated script to pull of convincingly.

9:31:05 PM Brad Mate: yeah, i get it if you are trying to make the guy really unlikeable...but thats not what it looked like they were trying to do. it was more like filler and was pretty alienating
9:31:49 PM Ben Sliker: i would say more, but you've nailed it.
9:32:17 PM Ben Sliker: like i would care about any of the characters in this
9:32:25 PM Ben Sliker: what were they wanted for?
9:33:06 PM Ben Sliker: hmm, apparently nothing
9:33:08 PM Brad Mate: yeah, i also get vagueries, as we did our fair share in refill, but you have to have enough info so we care about who these people are.

Rogan, I can't say that I was a big fan of this one. And I wanted to like it, cause you're Rogan, and I think you have a great sense of humor. This just didn't connect with me. I can see what you were trying to do with this film. Witty, engaging dialogue, a nice twist ending. I just didn't really care about anything that was going on. I was also conflicted about what the story was about, was it about these people, or was it about the box? I feel unsatisfied about either. I feel like this was a good exercise in direction for you, and in no way should you pigeon hole yourself into making just more TDRP movies, (and for that matter, I won't pigeon hole myself into reviewing this movie based on TDRP) but like I said before, there was a disconnect for us watching it.

Til next time buddy!

Rogan you have a good sense of humor, the jokes were really funny but the characters themselves need some more development. They're sort of obnoxious and we don't learn much about them and so I'm not sure if I really cared about the circumstances that happen.

An interesting story and the vagueness of the box was a cool idea, leaving it ambiguous I think was a good call, creates a lot of mystery towards what's in it and what it does.

Some good work for sure.

Ming

The color was very yellow across all shots and a little washed out on my display for some reason.

The plot seemed fishy. If they wanted the fat guy to kill the skinny guy all along they sure didnt plan well for the contingency of the skinny guy opening the box. Thank god the fat guy woke up for no apparent reason and stopped the skinny guy in time.

Or.. if they were just testing the box on these two guinea pigs the conspirators should have given more exposition at the end. "ie It took longer than I expected for the subjects to peek in, but it worked perfectly."

The smoking shot part made me want to smoke and drink beer. :)

Rodney V. Smith
11-07-2008, 10:33 AM
Mr Rogan and now we come to you, so let's play:

The opening shot of the dude on the phone felt a little superfluous. The phone call should have been a little more important, rather than having him flip it close. Maybe even a little more character building, or a lead in to the story... something about the box perhaps?

Handshake was just weird. Good introduction to our leads, and now we know who they are. Slow leadup on the car there. Surprised you guys didn;t get a 2 shot from the backseat. Good introduction to the characters: young asshole and older laid back dude.

Motel" i think we needed a shot of the box in the car or even betteir, a POV shot from the trunk.

I think you needed to build the tension even more here and show more of Saul's irritation. The younger dude's delivery on the joke was too much of a recital. He didn;t feel it and seems like he's trying to come across as a good guy. The perfect actor for this role would have been someone who took delight in his meanness and actually thinks this stuff is funny. A slightly below the surface psychopath.

Loved the shot of Saul waking him up with the gun. Think Saul should have been a little bit meaner there, really ready to blow this kid's head off. Would have helped o build the tension even more and build to the point of inevitability.

Love the bar scene by the way. Having the guy come in to check up on them was a nice touch and makes us wonder what the hell is going on. The kid is irritated but still playing the good guy. He needs to be a right bastard.

What would have helped this transition waould have been to have the bar music carry on over the dolly shot and fade away when the kid steps into frame.

Best bit of acting from the kid is when he's pleading for his life. I really would have liked to have seen a real psycho iin this role.

A little bit more information on the box, its next destination perhaps would have be nice to see at the end. Would have been nice to see it go full circle, from one person to the next, but never back to the boss.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. It was an okay film and I really expected more tension and better actors. with the right lighting and mood and intensity from the actors, this could have been a much better story. A few tweaks to the edit and you can make it so much more visceral...

Thanks for the oldest of all currencies: story.

Got to be honest, I had a hard time getting past the jokes. I undersatnd it's a character thing, but two full (and bad) jokes in a 6 min film really burned up some time for better story elements. Maybe spread out in a feature or 20 min.

Acting felt unrehearsed.

Not sure why all the fuss over the box. Just go shoot the guys and take it. Too much staging for a payoff that never quite came.

Really liked the mystery of the bok, the glow, and the effects after looking in. That was the strongest point in the film. Nicely done.

didnt really get the story, i guess it was a set up for one to kill the other? but why. this is a much bigger movie cut down into 6 minutes maybe.

really liked the bar shots. good set up too when we see the suit at the bar. acting was okay too, the big man was good. the kid was okay too but his jokes in the motel didnt work all that well, maybe because one joke is enough. small point , no need to repeat Earnhardt, kinda kills the previous joke. my 2 cents...

great use of the box! made me think about pulp fiction a bit.

11-08-2008, 02:04 PM
I enjoyed this. I think you almost got the road movie/pulp feeling very well. If you missed it slightly it was maybe in the casting of the younger guy, since the acting of both felt pretty good. The score went very well, too, not too sure where the story was taking us but all in all it seemed to flow pretty well.
