so here's a little clip of what i got, i got a basic square mask on then, which cropped them to the size i want, half and half on the screen..

but i want to be able to make the photo on the bottom transform, getting bigger within that box/smaller, showing more parts of that picture.. but when i trasform it, the mask gets bigger too..

basically i want the masks for both the video and photo to stay still/like two different compositions, then what ever content i put in them plays around within the boxes/masks..

like the masks are like windows, you cant move the frame, but what you see through the frame does what ever..

but seems pretty basic, i just cant get it to work..

wait! i figured it out.. i just put the video ontop of the picture, so i guess its just floating around under it..

but i would rather the content stay within the box.. so i still need that answer if it is out there..

not sure if this is what you need, but if you make a solid in the shape of your mask, place it above the picture in your timeline (or whatever needs a mask) and set the picture's TrkMat (Track Matte) dropdown to the alpha of the black solid, it will make the solid act as a mask independent of your masked layer's transform properties.

Would it be easier to make two comps and split screen in your NLE?

You do not need masks for this purpose.

Basically its a PIP (picture in picture) and can be done in the NLE (or AEFX if you choose)

If you need a frame/surround... make that in Photoshop and apply that over the top.
