View Full Version : shooting hvx in SD
hey all, i was wondering if on the hvx200... when you use the tape deck function, and shoot standard definition... if it is limiting...
can you still shoot overcrank frame rates? getting those amazing slomos...
is there any others, if any at all, functions that are limited to shooting p2 quality?
my reason being, that i had recently realized selling my entire standard def setup (dvx, century fisheye, letus, and other shit) would possibly allow me to purchase a used hvx200... but i also realized this would probably not include a p2 card...
and that im a contributing filmer at the moment, for a standard definition skateboard video...
just wondering, thanks all.

Nope, no overcranking with tape. And if anyone needs super slomo, it's a skateboarding
shooter. Start saving your pennies.

it's kind of rare for a used HVX to not come with a P2 card these days, just from what i see.
how many tapes do you fill up during a normal shoot?

I'm kinda on the same boat as you. I shoot skateboarding with a vx1000/century fish set up. Except I'm not selling my set up, just sellng my Nike sb collection to pay for the new cam. But yeah even a new HVX comes with a 16GB card, I'd be surprised a used HVX didn't come with at least one card. And remember, if you need 4:3 standard footy, you can shoot a lot of it on a P2 card. But if you want to overcrank and undercrank, just shoot 720p 30p. A 16gb card, maybe even just an 8gb would be good enough for that. When I shoot a whole day of skateboarding, I might use 90 minutes of tape, but in reality, I only get like 5 minutes of footy (that's on a good day). Remember with P2, you can delete every miss. A single trick only takes like 5 seconds, and even a long ass line would only take up like 45 seconds. So you could probably even shoot 3 lines and 6 singles on 2GB card at 1080p. I don't think you'll have a problem filling up a 16GB card.
I've also been giving that HPX170 some thought. It's got a 5 year warranty, that's a big selling point. And it's fixed lens is wider than the HVX's, which means the fisheye will be wider than the HVX's. I was kind of dissappointed after seeing how wide the HVX fisheye was.

That is funny. I sold my Jordan/air force 1 collection to buy my first camera set up. A lot of people have no idea the value in sneakers. I had 103 pair all in box.

haha yeah seriously! When I tell people I'm selling shoes to pay for an HVX, they look at me like I'm joking. I made $1,260 just this week from selling 4 pairs of sb dunks and 1 pair of Jordan IIIs.

thanks for the insight anyhow guys... i think i'll be sticking with the dvx setup for quite some time then..

Here's what I think you should do. Figure about how much you can get for your set up. Then save money while you make due with your set up. When you have enough money saved to where you can add money from selling your set up to make $5200, sell your set up and buy a new HPX170. Comes with a 16GB card and a 5 year warranty.
