I used to be able to playback 720/30P clips smoothly on my last generation Powerbook PPC in Quicktime but not anymore. I've always had FCP on the machine and it still plays smoothly in FCP but not with Quicktime. It is convenient to check files without booting FCP in the field. Anybody have any ideas what has happened? I don't run multiple programs when I play back HD clips. Also, the machine has never been able to play back 1080P footage but I think that is out of this old machines capability? Anybody have any thoughts on what I can do to fix this?

How about some version numbers of everything include OS, FCP, and QT, the speed of the PB, the RAM amount and what media drive you are using.

I use that same system as my field capturing device. Mine was never able to play 1080p footage either but I noticed that with one of the recent upgrades to QT that playback had taken a hit. Now even 720p stuff is choppy.
You might try downgrading, if possible.
Or maybe Apple will fix it sometime in the future?

I think you are correct. Quicktime is the only thing that has changed in my work flow.
