Can vegas 8, not vegas pro 8 work well enough for a newbie with a canon HV20?

Thanks!

There is no product called "Vegas 8". There is "Vegas Movie Studio 8", "Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8", and "Vegas Pro 8". Since the Canon HV20 is HDV, the minimum version you can use is Vegas Movie Studio Platinum because Vegas Movie Studio does not handle HD. This is an excellent product for someone just getting into video editing. The best thing is that the interface is identical to Vegas Pro 8 so that when you are ready to move up, there is absolutely no relearning required. Just new features to be used.

I went to BH and found that you need a 2.8G processor to edit HD with the Platinum version. Who makes a laptop that fast? It's got to be big bucks!

Is that only for real time playback? Vegas usually will run on most anything. I used to edit HDV on an old computer (with Platinum) with no problems.

One thought, isn't the HV20 a 24p camera or is it just HDV with pulldown removed? Will Platinum edit that?

ah, forgot about HDV - I use my HV20 for SD work. Yes, any sort of HDV editing needs a big grunty machine, regardless of software.

The short answer is yes. I purchased my camera and Vegas Pro 8 in March '08 (with absolutely no video or editing experience) and have made several videos since then. It's very easy to use, although I think you'll need at least a dual core processor to render HD in a "reasonable" amount of time.
