Based on a test clip I rendered, it looks like my movie will take 38.5 hours to render!!!!!!

I need to output an uncompressed quicktime file. TRT is 77 minutes. 32Bit Floating point, quality slider set to maximum.

My machine is a dual core 2.6GHz with 3 GB of RAM.

The film is very light on effects and has no CC on it even ...does this sound excessive to anyone?

I'll do it because I have no choice but this is unacceptable.

The render time seems perfectly normal given that you are using 32 bit floating. Why do you think feature films are rendered on server farms with dozens of servers more powerful than your machine?

I suppose.....FWIW I did a test on 8 bit mode and the render time was not significantly different.

Are these times the same as avid or FCP??

Do you have anything on the master effects track? These really drag down rendering.

Do you have another computer (or two) in the house? Maybe set-up a temporary renderfarm...

I can tell you from experience, it was no better when I was cutting on Premiere. And from what I read and hear, it's really no different on Avid or FCP depending on material.

Out of curiosity, are you doing a resolution change with this? What size video are you starting with, and what size are you rendering to?

nope - 1080 in to 1080 out. I;m going to get a quad core tomorrow, though.

What exact effects do you have on it, and what exactly are the render settings?

Hey David, I have removed all CC because it's going to the colorist. There are like two glows, a half a dozen fades, three or four instances of slomo and that's it.

Render settings are an uncompressed QT, none as video type, 1920 x 1080, 32 bit color, 32 bit floating point, quality slider to max, uncompressed audio. That's about it. Basically the highest quality QT you can make.

You might think of making lossless PNG files. It would probably be faster, and still lossless. Not to mention making smaller files. Just an idea.

Yeah except the colorist wants QT only.

Quicktime is a container. You can put all kinds of things in it. It says NOTHING about the codec. So you could make a PNG encoded quicktime, or JPEG2000, or Sorensen, or MJpeg. Speak to the colorist and try to get a more specific answer.

Just saying "quicktime" isn't giving any real information.

I realize that...i pointed out that he needs a quicktime uncompressed with *nothing* in the container. Vegas has this option.

Uncompressed Quicktime. No way around that pain I guess.

So I upgraded to quad cores today. Tests look like it will cut the render time in half!

Wow, I was thinking of upgrading my PC to a quad core as well. I'm currently rendering with a dual core AMD 5000+ 2.6GHz with 8GB RAM. Will you be running the 64bit version of Vista?
