Short answer - Sort of . . .

Lighting shots like this with even the biggest lighting packages is tricky, especially to make them look good.

A scrim would not have worked because you would see the net pattern as we look through the window. You can sometimes get away with that when the window is just a background element that is out of focus.

The better tool would have been to put ND gel over all the windows, but given the time, budget and crew size would not have been really practical.

Another option is to light up the interior brighter so you are balancing the to the outside more. I did something like that in the office scene and the shot of our hero leaving his house. That said, you need a lot of light to balance the two, and those shots were fairly tight, so we had a fighting chance at pulling it off. If we were wider (for example, like the the gallery, I could not have done it with the tools I had). On my meter, the outside was somewhere around a 22 and inside I think we were shooting around a 4/ 5.6, so 4 or 5 stops difference - quite a bit for a camera like the HVX with limited dynamic range.

So, factoring it all in, I knew it was more important for us to just get the shots than have me spend a lot more time trying to get it only a little better. The old phrase "not every shot makes your reel" is important, especially on projects like this. We got the coverage we needed, on time, and that's what really matters.

Very well conceived and shot.

Loved the opening sequence, I was drawn (no pun intended) in right away.

One thing I thought was really great was the sequence in which the story was told. Masterful reveal all the way through. And I'm still not sure of a couple of things regarding the sequence of events in the story, but I do follow the whole story (I think).

Great cinematography. Great music. Great casting. Sign me up for a DVD of this one.

Masterful!

John! Really glad you liked it... thanks for commenting!

good film!

loved the art! really cool idea, loved the animated art too, really well done, looked seamless to me! nice touch and idea.

acting- the guy was fine, the doctor was not that great, he was way too forced, i'd almost rather prefer not to even see him all that much, i'd rather see the guy react and think to what the doctor is asking, i think this would make that part of the story so much stronger and more interesting, i think this story is all about what is in the guy's mind, so show me reacting to what he is thinking about. to me this simple change would make this story a huge winner.

as it is i really liked your film. the music was good too. well done!

Carrying on the tradition from Timefest, the AIM sessions have returned, a live stream of whatever may come out of our heads as we watch your films. Here are Ben Sliker, Brad Mate, and Justin Kuhn's thoughts on "A Work of Art."

Since for some reason, since we couldn't get Adium, AIM and iChat to all agree with each in one chat room, we had to go to an online chat room for the 3-person chats. After almost being molested by a forty year old man in a chat room for "privates" (ben read private chat), we managed to hop on to the chatzy client, which worked well. Note: Never search "free chat" in google and expect what you are looking for.

Ben: A WORK OF ART
Kuhn: I've got "twisted" up.
Ben: yeah ... that's nice ...
Ben: we are going in order
Kuhn: ready
Jebus: hold on
Ben: okie dokie
Kuhn: agreed
Ben: ok
Ben: new color
Jebus: rdy
Ben: now i can tell when it's me and when it's justin
Ben: not that i needed help before
Jebus: i didnt have a problem differentiating. when smart stuff was being said i knew it was you
Ben: ZING!
Ben: 3
Ben: 2
Ben: 1
Ben: go
Ben: wait ... what website is this for again? i forgot ...
Ben: ooo
Ben: art nudity. bonus stars for mike manning.
Kuhn: Those are my "private" pictures
Ben: apparently this insane asylum has 50s female closeup lights installed.
Ben: i hated drawing humans in college
Jebus: what time on the film are you at
Jebus: im off
Ben: worst part of DRAWING I and II
Ben: 2:00
Kuhn: two oh seven
Ben: cyborg assassin
Ben: i'd buy that.
Jebus: WHAT DO I WANT? STOP DRAWING NAKED PICTURES OF ME FREAKSHOW!
Ben: yeah ... i hate it when the police come when i draw my neighbor naked constantly for 3 months
Kuhn: awesome animation
Ben: subway shots
Ben: nice
Ben: that had to be a pain to get
Ben: DONT MIND ME
Ben: JUST LOOKING AT YOUR ART
Ben: i wonder ... did she draw him naked?
Ben: not that i want to see ...
Jebus: you would
Ben: TOTAL CHEESE ENDING.
Jebus: yeah that relationship is gonna work out. she has all these cute drawings of him. all his are of her naked
Kuhn: I'm confused as to whether she was in fact real or not.
Ben: you see, that's the difference between other filmmakers and me ... that ending would have been creepy and someone might have died
Ben: screw this "im insane but happy stuff"
Jebus: keke
Kuhn: he gets laid...IN HIS MIND
Ben: Justin, you obviously take everything you see on screen as real
Kuhn: I do my best
Kuhn: "Falling" is hilarious by the way.
Ben: YEAH WE HAVEN'T WATCHED THAT YET ASSCLOWN
Kuhn: I don't see shi* really coming together in anyway, or apart really...no real conflict.
Kuhn: if that makes sense.
Jebus: i like mindpoo poos as much as the next person. but this one made no sense to me. is she real or isnt she? the doctor says she isnt, but he see's her, and not only see's her but see's her interacting with others which would make her real, but if shes real then he wouldnt be committed, but why would he walk into an art studio and see drawings of himself. its purposely confusing and i dont think its good writing
Kuhn: yeah
Kuhn: bit muddled innit
Ben: alrighty.

Mike, if you read the Barn Dance AIM session, you would know that you barely lost the feelgood movie of the fest award. Partly cause your guy was a little creepy and John's was a handicapped kid. Production value was solid throughout this piece even tho sometimes it felt unmotivated, i think it would have capped off your piece to have dark lighting in the asylum room and then have the blurry bright lights turn on at the end when he says he's in love with her. The animation and drawings were awesome. Cheers.

Beautiful artwork and shooting. Loved the story skeleton but the whole delusional/mental ward aspect was unnecessary, imo. I'd have rather the two both existed and just drew each other- a love story without the rest. His reaction to her becoming animated was a little over the top. Instead of freaking out and calling 911 he should have been shocked but curious as well and soon calmed down to listen to the voice. This would have made the story harder to cram into the format, granted but would have been far more interesting.

Mike Manning
11-07-2008, 05:35 PM
Hey thanks for commenting. While I was see where your coming from, the removal of "delusional/mental ward aspect" removes the very conflict that drives the story. Arthur is searching for an answer to the cause of his torment. This, for me, is the epitome of the Twilight Theme and removing it removes the essence of the story.
Were the story to be about star-crossed lovers drawing each other, there would have to be a new element introduced that provided some sort of obstacle that Arthur would need to overcome.
But yeah, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I'm glad you liked it!

I like the conflict going on... I would certainly not remove that from this film. -- However, I don't think scrapping the mental ward conversation would have hurt you. I can still see him struggling, even checking himself out of a hospital... but the conversation with the doctor felt redundant.

"After all... that's why you checked yourself in here... isn't it?"

Meehhhhh..... of course it is!!!!

Great job on everything else, Mike. This is a much tighter edit. I didn't notice much difference in the Cyborg Assassin office discussion, but I also didn't have a problem with it this time around... so, maybe you changed something... or maybe I just overlooked it. Either way, the fact that it didn't bother me is good!!

I still can't get over that ending. What a POWERFUL moment... probably the most emotional I've gotten in the whole fest. Their focus shifting to each other, and that BRILLIANT dolly move.... wooonderful, Mike. Seriously.

Definite contender for the finals. Keep it up, man.

I can't really say what hasn't been mentioned already. I dug the film. I think it could have done completely without the doctor scene and perhaps swapped with another form of exhibition. (say a convo with a friend in the mundane tasks of the world)

wonderful music. Maybe mixed too loud, but all in all great production and a feel good ending. I was left wanting to see and more of the two artists.

congrats on entering the fest,

I thought this was a pretty good film. I too had mixed feelings about the doctor scene... not sure why... something about the way they interacted with each other; it didn't seem real to me. I'm not sure what the ending represents... I think it was all in his head, but I was really keen on the idea of two artists finding themselves in that way. I think I was hoping it was real to the both of them.

Nice work. Thanks for sharing.

I didn’t watch all the entries yet, but this is my favourite so far.

I liked how this disturbing tale slowly morphed into a love story.

The scene where the drawings come alive was especially creepy and well done.

I would have liked it better if he met her at the mental ward, finding out she was going nuts just like him.

Nevertheless, it was a pleasure to watch and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Well done, looking forward to watch more of your films. :)

Wow, nice job. One of my favorites of the fest. Beautifully shot, and the moving drawings were fantastic. Great Great Great! My only con would be that there's a little too much talk with the Doc, I think you could've shortened a tad and 5 min would have been plenty. But that's minor. Well done.

cheers,
Jon

Hi Mike,

sorry it's taken me so long to get to this... I havent read this thread so I'll just get my first impressions out of the way before I read any of it to clarify what I'm thinking.

first off I liked it, the story had a nice progression and I was drawn in big time. I have to say I was a bit scared because I had two scripts I was going to do for this fest, one was 'broadcast' the other a short about a man writing a novel and one of his charatcers begins to come to life. Thankfully this went in a totally different direction and I was holding my breath all the way through. (because I still want to make that! :-))

Anyway... it all worked for me, I love the images moving on the walls - great creepy moment and the fact you managed to turn from that vibe into a love story in a natural way is no small feat in the timescale.

My interpretation of the end was that while he had been drawing this woman all along, she too had the same obsession to draw him, and they of course realise they are meant for each other. So why is he in a mental ward commiting himself? The doc says 'you know she is not real right?' and he replies at the end 'I know'...but I was thinking the opposite, that she was very real and she had the same councilling issues as he did. So I was left a bit confused at the message. Perhaps I have read the wrong thing into the ending; I don't mind an ambiguous ending with questions left unanswered, but these final two scenes seem to contradict each other, which is a shame.

That gripe aside, everything else was top quality and I will now go back and read the rest of the thread to see if I can gleam a bit more info.

Great work Mike.

I think you missed the subtle acting there when he says, "I know". For me, it seemed like he's going to look into the camera and give us a wink at any second.
That would've been cheesy, but the feeling that he's not telling the truth came across for me.

I like it a lot. The tone you got for this film was very interesting and all the elements worked together in maintaining it which is a challenge. The artwork and story both were very good, I admit I wasn't completely satisfied by the ending as I was really thinking the girl would be real in some capacity. If she would've been introduced at the beginning as a real person then adding the twist at the end would've helped, but revealing who she is near the end, and then almost immediately afterwords saying she's not didn't feel right.

Hard to make it work in such a short timeframe, but you did an excellent job with the time that you had to work with here.

Mike Manning
11-11-2008, 12:56 AM
Yeah... there's an unintentional ambiguity to the end that really separates the cynics from the romantics... my intention though (as yeehaanow pointed out a couple posts above) was that Arthur's line to the doctor reads more like "Sure, whatever you say Doc" ... cuz really, he's understanding that he's not crazy. But yeah, the structure definitely added some ambiguity that wasn't really intended to be there - though, I'm not opposed to how it divides the audience. I find it interesting how some people think he's crazy... and some people think he's found love. Anyway, thanks for watching...

And in other news... here's a picture from the premiere. This is a shot of (most of) the cast and crew right after the film ended...

My viewing of the films was interrupted due to a family matter and this was one of two finalists that I did not see. Tonight I finally got to screen A WORK OF ART and I absolutely loved it. As an artist I loved the story and especially the execution. You've got some great figure drawing and sketch work in this film Mike.

Opening camera work is marvelous and when you cut to the first scene with the doctor I really appreciated the glow effect. Little touches like the ink on his fingers and the detailing of the studio are to die for. Speaking of art direction, Jeremy Cisneros is nothing short of incredible. Jeremy was production designer on our Iraqi war picture and he just helped us out on the MIGGS music video we shot this past week and the guy is amazing. It shows in your film and I hope others here recognize that art direction is right up there with sound design in terms of making the difference in how a film is received. The studio set has all the elements of a working space including the imperfections and litter that adds authenticity and realness.

I simply can't say enough about Jeremy. We needed to create a somewhat funky medical lab from scratch for the MIGGS video and had a very short amount of time to pull it off. Jeremy went to AlphaMedicalProps and picked out a few items that would give us the most bang for buck on a very tight budget. He raided Luis's office and then scouted for junk at the warehouse we rented. Somehow in just a few hours he had a set with real character ready to shoot. Our good friend Matty G. shot Jeremy's set with a RED using anamorphic lenses and the results were stunning:
http://www.archivisuals.com/JeremySet.jpg

Ok, back to my review of this beautiful film. ... The production values are consistently maintained throughout and the story never feels rushed nor easily predictable.

Sebastian Stenhoj is perfect for this part. Great work directing him, Mike. He really conveys the tortured soul necessary to sell the piece. Mara is beautiful and a perfect counterpoint for the piece. My only critique would be the relatively weak (in my opinion) work depicting "her" images of Arthur, given that she is purportedly a featured artist in a gallery.

That score by Daniel Walter is killer. Simply killer! Whoa!

What a wonderful work of art you yourself have crafted. Top drawer. Absolutely spot-on and a beautiful depiction of what can be done with six minutes. Bravo.

Wow thanks Mark! I'm glad you liked it so much!
Yeah Jeremy does good work.. I think your the first to have commented on some of the subtleties of the film (ie.. the ink on Arthur's fingers and the clutter of the studio). There was definitely a lot of hardwork put into to all that (and a lot of stress for me and my girlfriend...as that set is our apartment!)
I agree with what you're saying about the gallery art.. there's a crazy story behind that actually. We originally had a different actor cast for the role of Arthur... and he dropped out 2 weeks before production - after Morgan had already done like 10 pictures of him. With two weeks left, she had to start over and do new pictures of Sebastian.. the workload proved to be too much in a short time so we brought on the help of another artist, Rachel Raleigh. I think the art definitely works for the scene, but I agree... I had originally planned for paintings that said 'fine art' more so than these.
But yeah man, thanks for commenting!

That's well said. The gallery scenes work well and the artworks are definitely from the hands of a talented artist. What I meant was that I could recognize several (not all) of the portraits of Arthur to be quick studies rather than polished works one would see exhibited. It brought to mind an amusing event that happened to me in college back in the 70's. I missed the first week of a drawing class and was pleasantly surprised to find the workload to be light and limited to 30 minute and 1-hour drawing sessions during class time. A week before the end of the class the instructor said, "remember, your three-a-week drawings are due next week." I turned to the student next to me and said wtf? Turns out the first class session he handed out a homework assignment requiring us to do three finished drawings each week. That first week that I missed class, the prof even warned several times against getting behind and trying to make up drawings toward the end of the semester, but then the subject was dropped and not mentioned again (at least not that I picked up on). So there I was needing 45 polished drawings within a week. I skipped classes and actually tried speed for the first and only time to be able to stay awake drawing (it kept me awake but I couldn't sit still and ended up bouncing all over the dorm not getting anything done). By the end of the week the drawings got really strange and desperate. So I guess I'm sort of an expert at recognizing art produced under extreme deadlines! That said, the work is wonderful and original and especially amazing in the works depicting the girl.

Hey Everyone.
I asked Larry to remove "A Work of Art" from public viewing.. as we're going to start submitting to film festivals this week. If you didn't get a chance to watch it, PM me and I'll send you a private link to watch it.
Thanks again for all the support. I'm glad you all liked it so much... and keep an eye for me in LossFest...

Damn didn't know people were still posting in the twilight section!

Thanks Mile, yes there is a longer cut. PM me if you'd like to see it. I have it on a back-link but cannot make it public because it is under festival consideration.

Speaking of which, we're on IMDb now! Go here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1347109/

And also, for anyone in LA... we're featured in the January issue of LA Direct magazine! I think the magazine hits stands today.. but here it is for everyone who can't get their hands on it..
