You would buy a Mac just so you can build virtual Lego contraptions? Are you that bored/lazy? :)

on a side note, gage did you read what i said about you in the 'are they any women here' thread??

well, I'd rather build a real one and then laser scan it into my computer, reconfigure it, then use a 3d printer to re-create it again:

(a) Laser Scanner:

1,995 Euros

(b) 3d Printer

$4995

(c) Uber Nerdy-ness:

Hmmmm... Sounds neat but I'll just stick with my bucket of legos. I must say though I wouldve guessed that all that equipment cost more. Technology is getting cheaper!

Gage - arent ya glad ya dont have to go and get a mac now! Bleck! :)

yea those ones are price break throughs (I was actually thinking of buying at one stage, hence I had them bookmaked), usually those things costs tens of thousands, bit like the whole RED analogy.

Jeff Anderson
08-07-2008, 06:42 PM
Ahh ok so they arent all that cheap. At least there is something for the budget minded geek though. That 3d printer looks really tempting. What the hell would I do with it though. I could make little penguin figurines and paint them pink. Hmmmm... Anybody wanna split the cost on one of these?

Anhar Miah

Well, one cool thing you can do with 3d printers, is make another 3d printer (thats the theory) its call self replication (kind like our DNA), we are nearly there.

Also things like cogs, wheels, gears, any kind of moving/ non moving parts are possible.

In fact they have a whole DIY thing going on, its called "Open Hardware" (like opensource)

Jeff Anderson

oh shit then the 3d printers might take over the world. I dont want anything that has the potential for self replication... thanks for the info Anhar, but I'm gonna leave this to those like to wake up surrounded by chainsaw wielding 3d printers. Maybe I'll have one sent to Penguin... he he he... That'll teach her.

Forget the penguins. This would be perfect for quick and easy prop construction. The initial cost is high, but not having to sculpt, mold and cast would be nice, and mold making/casting is not cheap.

Anhar Miah
08-07-2008, 07:27 PM
yea, thats not a bad idea, you can do prosthetics, like use a hand scanner to scan the face, arms etc, then you could manipulate it in 3d app and print it.

Oh sure, do something practical with it!!

That actually is almost tempting enough to buy one for... You'd be limited by the max size and I'm not all that sure what a big ol block of whatever it makes things out of costs... I may have to get one now... Suppose I'd have to learn CAD pr something though huh...

damn this could be used for minitures, just make the models in 3d, print it out and paint it then film like usual.

The up side is, say you want 100 houses, just model one and print it a hundred times..

EDIT::

Or grab the models from Google earth/sketch up and build an entire miniture city!

ConspiracyPenguin
08-07-2008, 09:06 PM
You could also use it to make a baseball bat which you could then hit Gage and Jeff with.

Hmmm, all the builders in suburbia must already have a 3D printer since all the houses look the same. When will there be a color 3D printer -- all the homes are beige.

And I was all ready to buy one.... Sorry Penguin... You'll just have to settle for boring ol zombies to attack you.

You could scan your hand in there and then put your hand on a stick and slap people with it. Or you could replicate your dog. Or make fake salt and pepper shakers. Boy would that fool people!!!!!!!! I'm bored. It's friday. Machine is rendering. Suppose I should stop it and just render this weekend....

Finally two of my favorite things, Macs and Legos come together. Take the black hair off the lego chick and the blonde hair from the blonde lego girl and put them on the spacemen in the red suits. Then you'll have Diana and Lydia from V. A bunch of red spacemen can be the visitors. The Blonde lego guy as Donovan, the Lego businessman as Nathyn Bates, another blonde as Julia and on and on. That's how I used to roll. I jumped the shark though when I introduced the Lego pirates and the Tyco Mega-blocks guy (from Tyco's Lego rip-off Mega-blocks at least I think that's where I got him) into the mix. I built a cold car for Donovan (I had a wind-up and a wire based RC motor, that was way before hi-tech-lego) but it would always break because I would make it do stunts. The Tyco guy would do cross overs until he finally became a regular on the Lego "V".

uh macs rule okay??
Yep, my kind of woman.

I used to have such a thing for Jane Badler. Hot alien chicks rock. By the way, you know the aliens in V were another group of villains based on nazis, right. Check the stylized swastika on the shoulder.
