BIG BALL was rough for me. It was the first one that took me more than one try. Turned out I needed more wheels for more power.

Way too addicting...
GageFX
08-07-2008, 12:13 AM
Hmmm. well, I've been trying the last one for about 20 minutes now. I'm having no problem getting a contraption up and over the ridge, but as soon as I attach the main pink ball thing, it doesnt make it up and over. It gets tied up in my thingy and it all goes to hell.
I'll get it.
GageFX
08-07-2008, 12:22 AM
My contraptions are a spectator sport. I end up watching for 5+ minutes to see what they'll do. They never disappoint.
GageFX
08-07-2008, 12:42 AM
I'm giving up. After painfully watching it for 15 minutes, it finally made it up, but then a wheel got hooked on the pink ball and it came to a stop.
This, btw, is why I BUY equipment. I made a dolly and a crane that look exactly like the things in this contraption.

http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=275705
You can do it without the extra (blue) wheels -- the water "sticks" don't need separate anchor points; you can just connect segments to each other.

I'm enjoying your solutions GageFX... and they ARE prettier then mine. I've used a soldier assault on several levels... using multiple contraptions to cooperate the thing in. Your solutions look nice compared to mine...
With 3D graphics at the level they are (COD, GOW, etc) it's amazing how much fun that simple little game is.
GageFX

Post your contraptions, Matt, I'd like to see them.
Beat Takeshi

you have to make a conveyor belt type of thing with wheels on the top and bottom connected by wood and the last wheels near the end with water and adjust each time they go through. If you do it right it spits the balls out into the goal.
I'm stuck on umpossible.

Maybe this is something else I didnt try. You can ADJUST things while it's in motion? (And that's exactly how I did it - conveyor belt - but I couldnt get the last ball up and over.)
Edit: You cant adjust, so I'm not sure what you were talking about.

It was funny, last night as I was drifting off to sleep, solutions were coming to me in that twilight sleep. Ok, this is my THIRD failed design for BaF. The first was a car design, that I wanted to work like UGA and Jared's but I couldnt wrap my brain around going backwards then forwards. I never even touched the ball.
So then I decided to try to knock the F*er across. My 2nd design was VERY different from the one linked, but I couldnt get it out the other side. Finally I made this last one (linked) but not enough loogie power to spit that sucker across.
That's when I gave up.
I'm kicking myself looking at how simple and elegant your designs are.

All I did is pop a stick into your solution there and it makes the bridge and works perfectly... and quickly! W/O showing you what I did... go back to it and draw a stick that will drop in the ball shooter... you'll laugh at how close you were. :)
I'm laughing at all you guys like I'm witnessing the discovery of electricity! That's a compliment... I love seeing the solutions! Uga has had some good sh*t now... I want to know how long it's taking and what percentage of luck is involved... otherwise that's freaky smart. FREAKY.

I've done them all. That was the only one I was stumped on.
I find it so fascinating how different minds work. I wracked my brain trying to think of how to make a bridge, but my brain was thinking "must be connected". It never occurred to me to LAUNCH a bridge. Then, I'm sure Matt just glanced at it and thought "huh. just put a piece of wood right there." as if it were nothing. That's awesome. It kills me that my brain was missing that, but like Jason said, the teamwork is awesome.

Did you do any other puzzles with that elegance?
The one thing I'd consider doing to mod this one is putting a little feed angle in the right corner... for a while I didn't think it would get the last 2 balls... but still... pretty freakin' cool man.
I'm curious if anybody can greatly improve on some of the designs... by getting to the goal much faster. The eventual success makes me LOL while watching... but a couple designs (think Ugafan) have made me think "damn that was smart"... although... Simon... damn that was smart!

Along the lines of overly addicting games, this isnt the same type of game, but it is just as addicting. I put it here so it can just get lost and disappear if no one is interested.
A friend and I played this for about a week straight until we finally completed it. So, be warned.
http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/game.asp
The MODE in question is listed under the FUN menu, and it is the 10K GOLD mode.
You have 10k in gold to buy towers to stop the creeps from getting by. The creeps that enter at the top, exit the bottom. The creeps that enter at the left, exit the right. Keep them from doing so. They come in waves, and only 20 creeps can get by or the game is over.
Etiquette is to take a screen shot just before you start, but after you've built your initial tower array, then a screen shot just as your 20th life is about to be expended. (Once the 20th crosses, you cant see the screen anymore.)
Just thought I'd throw this out there.

Handling was just about the hardest one, aside from Tube, which I'm still working out. I had to keep adjusting the braking tether, because of the elasticity. And if that wasn't nerve racking enough, I had it so that the block was within the goal I don't know how many times, and it was just cocked enough that it wouldn't give me the point.

This one particularly impresses me.
I tried and tried to do a simple design like this... but I kept finding the un-powered ball to pull my contraption down... I couldn't get it positioned right to force continued traction as you have... we were going for the same thing... but my design was 2 wheels more complex and eventually dropped... never gained traction.
Yours is a pretty good example of what I'm going for in these things... for elegance... but the one that explodes apart is incredibly entertaining... I want designs like that to work. I'm attracted to beautiful disasters... as long as they work out in the end.
This is the far simpler way to to the dynamic one:

Tom Marshall
08-08-2008, 07:58 PM
Whenever I make the stick longer, even by a pixel, it runs over the big ball and rides off the other side...
But yeah, the elegant stuff does tend to get boring. But then again, that one guy who did the Unpossible with 6 pieces? Not boring. I even tried copying his design and it didn't work for me. It really takes advantage of leverage which I just can't seem to get out of it. It will catapult, but the farthest I've been able to get it is halfway to the goal.

through all this, I'm surprised Anhar hasn't been tearing this up.
He's too busy cooking up the sequel, Quantumphysics.

I just think he hasnt chimed in yet since he's still writing up the white paper for his contraption for ROLLING AWAY.
This isnt a game, folks, this is serious science. http://www.buddy-icons.info/content/smileys/yahoo_beatup.gif

Um... I know I said I was done with this, but when I said ridiculous solutions... THIS is what I was talking about... very funny.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp3BHuFaGLw&feature=related
EDIT: Another brilliant solution... I like how this guy decided to not even address the big ball... and instead defeat gravity through acceleration.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taTU7k9p5Qg&feature=related
The youtube vids are more entertaining then some posted here... somebody beat TUBE with 3 PIECES. Although... I do think the game loses something when the exact same design can be totally functional if you move it by only a pixel. It's like chaos theory personified... and probably why you could waste so much time playing it.
I am intrigued by the stored energy contraptions though... I hadn't realized that the spinning wheels can store potential energy... you just have to know how much rod stores energy and how much truly stops the wheel.
Whatever... OK now I'm done with it... (probably not).

You can actually attach wheels directly to the box. Just click to place a wheel and drag it to one of the corners of the block. It will eliminate the 3 water lines. :)

Am I the only one that worked with the default position of the target object? Moving the little thing around helps massively. Some of the levels just got super boring.
