Hey everybody! Back in the game again! Really looking forward to this one. The script is still in the writing process but we already have a great actor on board. Zack Emerson, from "The Five Worst Days In The Life Of Bartholomew Saxton". Really excited!

Updates
8/6/08 - The script is still a work in progress. Zack Emerson, our actor just got into LA a few days ago. Hoping that we can finish the script off and start shooting in a few weeks!
8/8/08 - Just finished the rough draft for our script last night. It seems to be coming together really nicely! I think we are all going to sit down and figure out what needs to still be worked on with it!
9/20/08 - Just finished outr first shoot of the day it went really well i thought! Will have stills up later for sure!

09-13-2008, 10:58 AM
Yes! moving along very well! We are shooting on the 20th and 21st. I have a shot that is going to call for some 3d work and i was unable to find any VFX guys to help so i have been messing around with blender, after effects, etc. Zach (our actor) is currently in Valencia and we are planning on having him stay down here in the OC at a hotel during the shoot. I'm super excited for this one!

Dude, how old are you? I'm insanely impressed on the resources you've gathered. What did you shoot your Timefest entry on? Now you have a nice beautiful DVX, you have a dolly that does the work, you have some crew, and you have talents.
I'm impressed man, and I am DEFINITELY looking forward to this..

thanks man means a lot! I am 15 years old. I want to get some more BTS shots up so you guys can see what we REALLY had going. We had a 11 ft by 12 ft green screen and a LOT more equipment. I was sooo excited with everything we were able to borrow out from everyone. It's all a really good learning experience for us! But i wish it could have turned out a little bit better. Im still really happy with what we got.

Thanks for your intrest in the Dolly! I did build it. It cost me about 60 bucks and it runs AMazingly smooth. I am in love with it now. I used some cheap angle iron, rollerblade wheels, 3 by 3 peice of wood and some PVC. If you want some more in depth instruction feel free to PM me!
What do you pay your crew with, Oreos and Gummi Bears?
hahaha! I love this line too! Actually my crew probably wishes they could get paid in Gummi Bears and Oreos... what crew doesnt??? ;)

I put up a pic of the green screen we used. This was at 7AM And i hadn't thrown any lights on it or anything yet.
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb316/clarkage24/IMG_0221.jpg
As for the dolly I know there are a lot of questions about it. I actually just put sandbags on the end of the PVC which also helped as a blockade to make sure the dolly didnt roll off or anything. And then when we used it on grass, just the wait of it kept it planted but i still put sandbags on there just in case. It is a very GOOD idea for any of you indie film makers out there or just anyone wanting to save a few bucks. If you have any more questions i would love to answer them.

clarkage
10-29-2008, 10:18 PM
Yeah we got it from a USC film student I know and he let us borrow it for a weekend. It was 12 ft by 12 ft and it was awesome!! We used it for an effect in the end of the film.

What's cool is your parents let you tape a green screen to a wall inside your living room. Cool parents! :)

Well they did use painter's tape. When I was that age I probably would have used duct tape. And it probably would have involve spaghetti sauce as well.
Seriously. Impressed with your BTS photos. And feeling really old.

Thanks for all the great comments! And yeah we had it all taped up, but that only lasted about 2 hours without falling, so we took a trip down to the hardware store and bought a bunch of PVC to make a ghetto frame for the green screen.

I love kids stories, but I tell you what. This one threw me for a loop! Great ending! This was a really good piece. I noticed there was some hissing in the narrative audio in the beginning, but other than that it was very good and I thought the kid did an excellent job of acting. Just can't say enough about that shot at the end.

Great job Clarkage! ...and you're only 15 years old? I'd say you have a very bright future in film ahead of you! That said, it seemed to me that the audio in this one needed work, levels, noise, etc. I also didn't feel the score fit the action. Great story idea & you really pulled it off. Congratulations!

11-01-2008, 08:07 PM
What happened with the compression? I think you could have tried a couple more times to get a higher quality file.
I enjoyed the lighting, nice flesh tones, the indoor shots weren't badly done either. I did have a serious problem with the music, it was so poor and intrusive I couldn't focus on what was going on, I think less is more with ambient music.
Good story overall, I felt bad for the little kid, didn't see the ending coming.

Nice, Clarkage. You really got the Twilight theme going with this film. My only advice is to be very mindful of the audio as it is so very critical. I didn't catch some of the dialogue. It was a very good film overall. You're well on your way!

First off, thank you for all the comments it is really appreciated. As i have said before the whole thing is an amazing learning experience and just what i love to hear is more things i can work on for next time!! =)
I have to agree with all of you on the audio. It really disappointed me... And as for the music I went back and watched it again and i can see what you are all talking about it definitely had some awkward moments. I think that Justin Durban is willing to score our next one that we do because i have used his stuff in every film but I have problems when it comes to throwing the music down. Also I think next time around we will be monitoring our audio levels like hawks because it can just KILL any project you are working on. Thank you for all the feedback guys! Did anyone see anything else they thought didn't fit, etc.? I prefer brutal honesty over light happy little comments that don't help.

Nice work. If I might be allowed to nitpick, one thing I would point out is that the camera shake seems to come in a bit late and isn't totally consistent through the quake. Great ending, looking forward to your next work.

Nice job guys, the only thing I had a problem with was the volume on your young boy's voice. I could barely make it out. Also I would have liked to have seen him walking down a deserted street, I wasn't quite sure what was going on. It would have been nice to have set the scene/story a bit more. But hey, that's just me. Best of luck on your next project!
cheers,

This was fun and the ending surprised me a little.
There were some pretty smooth shots pulled off in this. Good camera work.
Work on the audio and you will come across much stronger.
Nice job overall.

Very good, you're lucky to have actor like him by your side. One-man films mostly depends about the performance of that one.
Zack did a great job, though at some times he walks strangely a little bit, like he's limbing. I didn't like the lighting outdoors-it looks overexposed to me, I think you just needed to lower your brightness in post-production(if you were able to), but I guess you're aware of that either.
Another thing-he's all alone there and he shouts if there's anyone out there. Now, if you couldn't get the empty street while he's walking, you could just shoot some details, roofs, windows, doors, cars, the sky...much of those shots would be like his point of view, that meaning, you don't need some great total shot etc to show that he's all alone. And of course, while editing it's much easier to put together ''Zack looking into sky---sky---Zack continues to walk'' then ''Zack---Zack---Zack''. It's better while editing, it looks better, and it doesn't cost you a lot or anything by that matter. : )
Audio could turn out better, but as I said-this is one-man film(hard and mostly unthankful), and dude, you're 15 years old! This film is much better than some on the fest by my opinion, and that just means that you should keep it coming, work more etc. If you continue, by the time of my age you should be one serious filmmaker.
Keep it up.
Maximus

Definetely captured the Twilight Zone theme. Actor did a great job. Nice dolly moves! My only critique would be that the effects could have been a little better. But that's nitpicking. Good job! Look forward to your next film.

Very nice story and fantastic score. I loved the moment when the snow fell down. It gave me the sensation of fairy tale and I wished to could go back in my childhood time. Very enjoyable film - compliments! :)

very ambitious short! i will echo an above poster to say that maybe add in a POV from the boy. love the ending, good twist! the boy did a great job too, keep filming!!!

dragged out a bit it seemed, but what a clever story. reminded me of the TZ where the dolls were in the barrel. audio mix of the dialog a bit weak in places (ambient noise, etc., like the mic placement was off, background noise).
Horncastle
11-07-2008, 09:16 PM
You had a great story here Clarkage, and some clever ideas like the earthquakes and the snow. Zack is becoming a pretty good actor too. That said you have a quality problem, both with overcompression of the file and with overexposure. I wonder if you tried doing the latter on purpose to give a "washed out inside the glass" look. If you did, I'm afraid it didn't work.
It was an ambitious idea, trying to tell the story with just one young actor, and it was maybe a bit too much for both of you. I think you needed to tell the story through images and action as far as possible, reserving Zack's monologue to tell the audience what's happening only when you really couldn't find another better way. I don't think "Look Mum, it's snowing" was necessary, for example - we could already see that.
I also think you could have made the editing a bit tighter: you had some shots in there that could have been cut entirely, the CU of the grass with Zack behind out of focus at 1:37, for example.
Overall, a good job though. The original story made up for some of the shortcomings.

Hey, nice film. When the ending came I felt like I had been thinking waaay to hard about the earthquakes and snow. I was thinking cosmic phenomenon or something. Guess not. ha. Anyway, most of my thought have been covered. The one thing that stands out is the length, I'd like to have seen a shorter film. Or perhaps with more events. Either way, good work gettin this sucker in (all the more impressive after checking out your bts).
