View Full Version : Vegas On Vista Anyone?

I have been using Vegas 8 on XP for a year now and like it very much. Never any problems. I am on a laptop, and will be putting together a new tower (first time at this). My motherboard will support 8gb RAM if I am on a 64bit OS. I think it will only support 2 or 4GB RAM if on 32bit OS like I am now. I have played around in Vista on some other laptops, but never anything intense.

Does anyone edit on Vista 32 or 64 and have any input? Is there any cons to using Vista instead of XP to edit?

I am running 8 on a 32 bit vista and am not having any real problems. Vista is more bloated then XP and that can effect performance.

I will say this though, XP just works. It's tried, tested, and solid. Vista is still a little shaky and I don't feel 100% secure on it yet, but so far so good.

I've been running Vegas 7 on a 32 bit Vista machine... no problems (knock on wood) so far.

...and I'll agree with William...XP is just solid as a rock!

I have Vegas 8 on an older XP laptop with 2G RAM and on a much newer Vista laptop with 2G RAM. It runs fine on the laptop, but I have a TON of stuff on the laptop and it is my internet comp - so it isnt the cleanest machine. The XP desktop is ONLY Vegas and Adobe Creative Suite, nothing else and never been connected to the net so it is very clean and fast.

I prefer the XP box for editing over the Vista, BUT, Vegas in Vista is fine.

Also, just about 3.2G is roughly the total RAM that 32bit recognizes, and that requires 4 too get to. (or 3 1G slots)

Thanks for the fast responses. I think I will put a 64bit version of Windows on it for now.

William, what motherboard do you have? All the ones I was looking at say they will only recognize up to 4gb of RAM like Gage said unless you are running a 64bit OS

Also, I know that DDR3 RAM is out, but it is expensive and I am assuming it is still not really needed currently.

Does anyone know if a motherboard such as this one:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3523225&CatId=3495
That says it supports DDR2

Will work with a video card that says it is DDR3 like this one:

My second hobby is games, but I have never made my own machine, I am used to buying complete Dells and stuff for games.

I am guessing you cant use DDR3 RAM on a motherboard that takes DDR2, but could a DDR3 video card work on that same motherboard?

Sorry, that was confusing.

I am running Vegas Pro 8 on Vista 32 bit. Not 8 gigs of ram. I have 4 gigs installed and windows sees like 3.5 gigs total. I am running a Asus board.

I have been running Visata ultimate 64bit with vegas pro8a with no problems(8b was very buggy in xp pro and vista ult. 64) I have tuned up vista using a few tips and tricks and it screams. I'm liking it better than XP. Although my Primera bravo II dvd dupliator does not work with 64bit. Had to hook it to my laptop.

Cool guys, thanks. I am very excited for this computer to come. Editing will be enjoyable once again.

Yeah, the 3.x G limit is only in 32bit. There is ALOT of discrepancy on the net regarding the actual amount, but 3.2 or 3.5 - it still isnt 4.

HOWEVER.... REALLY do alot of research to see that the 64bit OS will work for you. You can expect to lose the function of both some hardware as well as software. I was going to make the switch a while back, then read of all the complications and it wasnt worth it. It's fine for a dedicated video system that you have checked compatability on everything, but for an all around computer it is not the best option.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK. It is not just a matter of "one allows MORE than 4G, the other allows less than 4G". It goes much deeper than that.

I really only plan on installing Vegas 8, Photoshop/AE CS3, and maybe a game. I don't think I am even think I'm going to let it go online. I plan on getting my laptop fixed up a little so I can use it on the go, or for web purposes.

What processor are you getting? I HIGHLY recommend a 45nm quad core (Q9450) over a 45nm dual core (E8400). Also DDR2 1066 is amazing btw. You don't need DDR3 yet. The clock speeds are higher, but at a hit of cas latency timing.

DDR2 1066 = 5-5-5-15
DDR3 1333 = 9-9-9-24, but you may be able to lower those.
So overall, you really don't get that much of a performance boost because the cas latency timings are so high.

There are alot of questions. You should PM me or something, cause there's a lot of variables to get the best price you want. For example, if you want a video card that has PCI-E 2.0, then you need a X38 chipset, and not go cheap and get a P35 motherboard which only has a PCI-E 16X slot, but you dont need a P45, cause that's more for the crazy people, I dont think you need 16GB of RAM is the point.

Do you know what video card you want? If you want the top edge card, get the Nvidia GTX 280, its $450. It can run Crysis at 50fps on max graphics. (at 1280x1024) Or the next best thing is the ATI HD 4870, which is $300 and gives 80% performance of the GTX 280, a great deal, or even the ATI HD 4850, which is about the same performence of 8800 GTX for $200.

Then, if you're going to overclock (highly recommend) You need a better heatsink. You can easily take the Q6600, stock at 2.4Ghz, to 3.4 and even 3.6 no problem with a good heatsink for about $50-$60.
Also, you can overclock the GTX 280 to crazy levels no problem. Stock core clock speed of 602MHz to 675MHz and the stock memery speed of 2214MHz to 2300MHz, no overheating, WHICH COMES TO ANOTHER, the case. You would need a good case to keep your comp cool. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811166005 for example. My friend has one, and its great. Has 2 fans on the side that suck in air, then one on the top and black to blow out. Amazing circulation.
