Which one? If you mean the 1st environment test, that is completely created in VUE 6 using environment atmospheres, textures, and digital goodies. I am just getting a grasp on the program. That is the coolest thing I have done with it so far, but I need to do much more if I want to pull this off. Thanks for stopping by!

Hey Simon! Thanks for stopping by. The photo of you with the axes is priceless. Show that to the someday boyfriends of your someday daughter and they will be quite respectful of her.:Drogar-Evil(DBG):
THIRST will not be entirely CG but if all goes well, a large part of it will be. I am stretching my CG legs to see how it feels as well as testing the amount of time and work it takes to make this short so I know for a large future project. I am learning as I go, so tutorials are my friend.

Now the trick will be to make that level of realism work with actual footage of real people. That will be what probably kills me due to my head exploding or spontaneous combustion...at the least, my computer may kill me just for thinking I can do this. haha:zombie_smiley:

He is working hard on the VFX for Netherborn and Sleeper at the moment, so this time, I will try my hand of the VFX. I am sure I will run crying to him at some point, but I am brave at the moment. I would however love him to AD for me...I should probably ask him! Haha:beer:

Way cool to have that invite Matt. That's the kind of thing that will really improve the networking and bonding around here. We feel like all the Fat Monster alums from our prior shoots are kind of like family.
When you get your shooting schedule worked out please do post it. Not sure about the best place to fly into but perhaps some can come into L.A. and we can drag up a carload of peeps if the shoot doesn't conflict with our own schedule.

These are complete 3D environments. You can fly around them in VUE 6. People will be greenscreened and put into them via Syntheyes, the motion Tracking Software building a camera that duplicates the real world camera for Maya. I think I will composite in Combustion, or AE. We shall see. Once I build the world for the person, I will put a 3D person in to block shots, before I shoot.
Oh, and I must give a lame excuse so that if this horrificly sucks at the end....it is my first time trying any of this, so be kind as you tear me apart. :dankk2:

Those are all some really nice images. My only nitpick would be that the castle itself look just a little too clean (maybe unlived it?) which diminishes some of the illusion of "realness." I've seen the same thing in some movies and it just pulls you out a bit, because it doesn't feel real. Don't let that discourage you, though, because it still looks great.

Hey thanks Blaine. you are right about the clean-ness. I need to figure out what to do about that. I will probably wait until The image scene is imported into Maya and then scar things up with the actual polygons themselves. Maybe I can do that before though and already have it that way in Vue...hmmmm....ooooh! Maybe I can use my new program Bodypaint and create a rockin texture! I didn't even think about that until now. Thanks Blaine!:dankk2:

Matt Sconce

How did you build and render that castle out so fast?
Vue 6 xStream has a ton of goodies that come with it, and it freakin rocks! If my computer was a bit faster, I could handle bigger scenes. Right now I am at 500,000 polygons in the environment and it takes about 20-30 minutes to render one 800 by 600 frame. I changed somethings and had about 2 million polygons and my computer crashed. One frame at 500, 000-1,000,000 polys in Vue is fast, but for the actual animations from Maya, I will render through Rendertitan.com (Thanks Mark Johnson for that link!). I will render them in layers and passes for compositing. Thanks for stopping by!

Got it. Just didn't understand what exactly you were making these with.
Looking forward to how you use these. Do you have plans for incorporating some of these with real set pieces? I think they did that in the Ore.
And I'm pretty sure Frank did that with some matte paintings in his TimeFest entry.

Thanks! I am really hoping I pull this off. Basically, am learning a piece of software by building what I need in it. This is how I am making THIRST. I am learning VUE by building the environments, Learning Maya, by composing the view scene with motion tracked data from Syntheyes (Which I will learn as I track the footage), and finalizing textures with Bodypaint which I will learn when the time comes. All of this will be rendered by Rendertitan, which I have never used before so that is new too. haha:beer:

Holy cow...you are a glutton for punishment...and I LOVE IT! :D
I really like the way you are willing to just jump in and learn new software in the middle of a project. The banner you have is sweet dude! Good composition...leaves a lot to the imagination.
I have Syntheyes and have used it off and on for a while. Still very much a newbie but if you have any "beginner" questions when you get into it feel free to hit me up and I'll do my best to answer them.
Best of luck man!

The Tests turned out pretty well. I am focusing on the script for the next two days to get it completely roughed out and then I am off to the Action on Film Festival for PUSH. It breaks into half of that for interior shots so we should be all set.

Are you shooting on RED again?
Matt Sconce
07-28-2008, 02:37 PM
Probably not. I don't think I will tackle RED again until I am all MAC based. I am probably going HVX200.
Blaine
07-28-2008, 02:47 PM
That's too bad because the RED really excels when it come to effects shots...which this seems to be heavily laden with.
Matt Sconce
07-28-2008, 02:52 PM
The HVX200 keys hold up extremely well in my experience, but it would be wonderful to have the resolution of the RED. I just know how incredibly time and memory intensive the PC workflow was during PUSH. Since all of my programs are PC based, I will have to wait until, 1. RED has a kick butt PC workflow, or 2. I go completley MAC based, before I will tackle that beast again.

He probably does not need to offer it on free projects as he has enough footage to show it off now. It was not a free project. It was used in trade. Jusitn is a great guy and I am sure if we needed to use the RED we could work out a deal. I am simply not going that direction this time. I had to CUT in After effects for PUSH, and that was not a happy experience. haha:beer: Also, I already know and have a pipeline for the mxf HVX200 footage so it will move much faster, saving me time for post.

Sweet! I am getting good feedback from people reading the script. I have been able to tweak some things and make others more clear. I think this will make for a much better script.
I have also approached the Actress I would like to place Alice, but am waiting for an answer to the role. If she accepts the role, I have two more parts to cast "The Mother and Father of a 12 year old girl" and then I can start storyboarding.

These are NOT storyboards from THIRST but they are an example of some work I did with Storyboard Quick 5 (http://www.powerproduction.com/quick.html). You can import your own backgrounds, and pictures with alpha mattes and such from photoshop and they have a ton of posed characters.

Dang Matt, this is intense! And a shot inspired by Aetas, woohoo! I can't wait to see this. Just remember that its better to imply an effect if it cant be done to par, better to give us two effects that blow us away, then 10 effects that are 'meh'.
Rock on!

I went to the script award show last night and won an award!:cheesy: My feature script Stricken won best Adapted Screen play! Now I will have an article about me written in Hollywood Scriptwriter and Stricken will be shipped along with the other winning scripts to people interested in them associated with the AOF to see if anyone is interested in getting involved with Stricken. Hey thanks!
Last night was a ton of fun. Troy Ruff and his wife Heather, Norm Sanders, my Dad Gary, and Brandon Rice all sat at a table at the awards show. The Twin Palms served ridiculously good food and Norm ordered his ridiculously good Category 5 hurricane beverage. (you'll have to ask him about that sometime).
Michael Madsen was there, as well as John Savage. Ernie Reyes and Ernie Reyes Jr. were also there.
When they announced the winner for best Special effects and put the clip of the winning film on the big screen, I saw my lead in PUSH ,Kenn Arola, running and jump kicking the gun back at Randol and then realized "Holy crap! that is my movie!" I got up there and gave a pretty lame speech, but took home the award. So I walked away from the fest with two awards and was extremely pleased.:) I went in not expecting anything and it is nice to be surprised and feel recognized. I had a great time!

We had planned to be there to meet you guys before the awards dinner started but our meetings ran late and Norm told us that we didn't stand a snowball's chance of getting into the ballroom. We hung around for awhile in Pasadena for awhile but the ceremony went LATE LATE LATE and we finally slunk back to the shack without getting to see any of you.
Nevertheless, we're proud of all of you and are so pleased that you represented DVXSER so well, Matt and Gary.

Well, the pitch for Stricken was very enlightening. I reccommend meeting with Larry from Nehst Studios if you have the chance. He tells it as it is and gives you the knowledge of what you need to change to have a successful pitch. I will know in 6-8 weeks if Nehst wants to pursue Stricken. Here's hoping! Well, back to Thirst.
A costume should arrive today and then I can run some test effect shots. I am worried about one in particular that will be hard to pull off. I will be working on that one for a couple days preparing for the test shots. I hope everything is going great and smoothly for you other Dvxusers out there!

Well, I'm sure the costumes can be had easily in LA, it's just a matter of the $$$, right?
Does that Fresno Film commiss have any registry of people in the area who might have costumes? A college maybe. I figure you know everyone around there worth knowing, but a college might be one place to try for borrowing. Lot's of shakespeare and what-not.

Also, I just put some new business cards together, check them out. 40 ish bucks for 250 double sided custom glossy business cards and 2 day mail 29.95 with out shipping cost.

The card look great. The only question I have is, once it is printed is the resolution on the small screen grabs high enough to make as impact on the viewer? There is a lot of detail in there.

Yeah, it should be. The detailed file is 300dpi and the text in the awards will be readable so the detail will be there. Glad you like the card. I think it should catch people's attention and I hope it turns out well. We will see when it comes in soon.

Find the link to your first page and copy it, go to USER CP. In signature, click on the picture and then click the link button "chain" in the upper right. Paste the link to the first page in the window that pops up, hit okay and you are good to go. :)

UPDATE:
Apparently I suck at buying costumes.:zombie_smiley: I asked our little girl actress's mom what size dress she wore and she said it was a 10-11. I then went and bought a rockin size 10-11 dress for the role...which was not cheap...only to discover to my dismay that the 10-11 for children is different than for women. I had a dress come in size 10-11 for women. I am lame. So now I ordered a second dress in a different style, and the other is on hold for future projects....haha:huh: Just shows what a Galoot I am. ha! All environments are 3d. The actors will be blended so they attempt to blend in with a completely created world. This is a learning experience for me and lets me learn all of the equipment I want to become proficient at. It will most likely suck horribly, but at least I will go down in a flame of glory.
The definition of Galoot is awesome! I am Scottish so perhaps I am a 8th or 9th generation Galoot.

One of the tools I will need to pull off one of my main shots is being worked on by my dad. It should be functional in 1-2 weeks. Hopefully I can pull that off.

On a totally unrelated note, the lead from PUSH, Kenn Arola was helping me work out today. We lef the gym and I was about to get in my car when I dropped my envy cell phone. Usually I have extremely quick reflexes. (several black belts) and I could catch it no problem, but my arms were so dead from the workout, they would not move. I watched my newly replaced envy fall and now it has a crack in the front screen. LG Envy is this phone:http://www.mysimon.com/i/ms/fd/featprod/phones/env.jpg I left my last one on top of my van and drove away. I watched it flip off the car and get runover.:crybaby: They replaced it with one that didn't work right and then the new one they sent I just dropped and cracked the screen. Larry, buy the phone and just mail it to me. If you do not comply, I will be forced to send imaginary forces from my imaginary world after you. Yeah, right. I fished my MDA twice(!) out of the bowl.
I´m a phone killer.
Last year I killed 5 phones (best year so far).
2 by "bowl diving" (don´t even think of asking)
one droped out of the jacket,
one mysterious display crack over night without even touching it and
one by forcing the tip of the stylus into the microphone hole insted into the reset hole (they changed the position on the new model) - this was the shortest lasting phone I ever had.
Took it out of the package and did the "restet" stunt.
Livespan under 30sec. - there goes 350 Euros.
Now I got a chinese Iphone fake for 99 bucks, but I don´t like the Apple menue structure so I go sell it and get back to my MDA.

Often the theater rent their costumes - I don't know if somebody said this already before! (I think I read only that somebody said the colleges rent costumes). In Germany you can also find rent places for costumes! Perhaps this possibility exist also in Fresno.

My motivation is staying up for many reasons, but I can still relate to this feeling... I'm dragged down mostly, at this point, by story and script.
Keep pushing, man. I'm reminded of a scene during Run Fatboy Run (with Simon Pegg) where he hits a brick wall ("the wall") just as he is about to finish a marathon. It's a rather clever bit to a somewhat stupid film, but I think it illustrates our dilemmas rather well.

and

I'd rather one of you have it than a stranger. Anyway...See you all soon. I am off to sell more things. -Matt
I'd love to buy that sword from you, but can't trust actors with real weapons, Dunno how you did it.
Sorry you had to pull out dude. Take care and maybe take some more time and just get it done anyway, even if it's not for the fest. That's a tact that I'm having to take with one of my other projects (the musical) and I think it will be better for it.

Well besides Helping Troy and Shane on the shoot, I have been hard at work getting a new illusion I created for marketing. The link has been in the cafe but I will put it here until 5PST when it will be removed. The password is illusion Enjoy as this is the last time this will be seen until it is released.

Well, my Mad Scientist Father has been engineering a Giant Crane that will have the capability to move on the X and Y axis for future endeavors. We will use it on Thirst and hopefully some other Fresnan projects. Here is a picture of it. i think he made it for about 120.00
