It is my friend, it is :) It comes even better: It is only 5 minutes away from my place......... by foot :D
It's in my hometown called Overath ---> Villa Overath :love4:
This location also has a downside. The location sound is not that good. It's next to a high frequented road. but I won't record that much dialog anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

Exciting stuff is going on :) Today will be our first stunt training! I will bring my camera, so maybe I can show some cool things at the end of the week.
I really wanna step up with this one. The 34th place with No Air is not acceptable. One major flaw of No Air was the lack of preproduction. I had ideas in the beginning, but then lost focus and I didn't start organizing things till the last minute.
That's what I am going to change with Falling. I want to get my things together early on, so I can focus on other stuff.
And it will be a step up in post production aswell, needs some more VFX.
I wish I had a steadycam! Go loose some wait Frank! :D

HA! loose some weight? If I start loosing wight now till i fit into that vest (made for little indian guys) I can enter Twilight Fest 2030. :violin:
Nah, I rig up an extension and make it a MANS VEST.
By the way, you can borrow it any time (not while I shoot of course).
Frank
P.S. After I did the extension you might need to gain some weight to fit in that vest :D

Small dolly? You might want to offset the wheels on that so the wheels are never hitting the joints in the track at the same time... helps to eliminate bumpage

get some eyelets on the top and with some velcro you can tie the legs of the dolly down. I predict this will come in useful in the future...
also, definitely get someone to push the dolly for you while you operate the camera... helps so much with fluidity...

Most Germans come here because they don't have a decent beach. But some of them also come here to smoke that green stuff :)
Last month, some German kid called me on Skype to smuggle Marijuana... I told him to get it himself in Amsterdam and stop bothering me!

Shims?
Are you going to get some 10ft sections? When they cut the pipe at the hardware store they don't get the cuts too straight and its a bit of a PITA.
Simon Höfer
07-27-2008, 09:45 AM
No, it's more like 6.6ft. And I cut the ends by myself. The hardware stores over here are quite limited. That really sucks. I always have to compromise because I can't get the stuff I need.
Rodney V. Smith
07-27-2008, 09:46 AM
Well at least the ends are flush, right? Since you;re doing them yourself and all... how are you making the joins?
Simon Höfer
07-27-2008, 10:01 AM
The ends are made so that you can put two pipes together, thus I have to cut the bigger end. I did not yet figure out how to make the joints. I've seen some solutions on the net, so I'll see what I can find in the hardware store. Maybe like a wooden piece in between the pipes with a cut in the middle and then gets spread by a screw. Do you know what I mean? Hard to describe.
At first I didn't plan to make such long tracks. But yesterday I thought of a cool dolly scene for "Falling" which is a bit longer. :D
Rodney V. Smith
07-27-2008, 10:21 AM
I already have my own dolly and tracks so I was wondering if you had come up with a new way to make the joins. I've gone the way of set screws that sit in the join.. rotate the track so the holes align, and then extend the screw so it fits into the hole. works pretty good so far.

hey that works. good idea on the cross bars too. I'm here struggling with a way to use aluminum flat bars which are permanently attached to the rails. your way definitely works, especially if you're not traveling too far with the dolly.
How far are your locations anyway and how many shots do you plan to do with the dolly?
For Blood & Coffee I've been planning my shots to have the camera permanently mounted on the Jib and Dolly so that every single shot is moving.. even if it's only the movement of a foot throughout the entire scene... complicated but it's definitely the direction I wanna go with my narrative and visual set up.
Simon Höfer
07-28-2008, 12:43 PM
The locations are super close. the closest is about 5 minutes and the farest about 15 minutes, by foot :D (I take the car of course)
I am going to use the dolly in probably 6 shots. A few static shots and then with my stabilizer and handheld probably.
I've got no jib yet, that might be the next project in the future.
Rodney V. Smith
07-28-2008, 12:48 PM
It's actually an easy build, especially if you're doing a mini-jib and not a crane. With the Mini-Jib you can use it as your tripod, but then get some of those cool moving shots without having to change the setup OR you can just get it in one. I just built a 4ft Mini-Jib just for Blood & Coffee out of Ikea parts. Probably took shorter to build than building your dolly...

Well if it is a DB building, it probably belongs to the Bahn.
Maybe you can give them a call if tat is the case:

Not yet. It doesn't belong to german railways anymore. I just found out that it belongs to a company here in my city. I am going to contact them next week.

Didn't write so much in here, because my girlfriend was at my place for the last couple of days. But we did alot of tests for Falling. Went to some locations and filmed a few things and also did some VFX tests.
It's shaping up nicely. I also contacted a cameraman, so I don't have to take care of that and can focus more on acting and directing :)

To get the new location is not that easy. They had bad experiences with filmcrews in the past, so they hesitate. I have to call them back tomorrow.

They said that the filmcrew hindered them at their work. So I told them that won't be the case when I am going to film there. The crew is so small, that we can just move when they need to go somewhere. And we won't stay there so long anyway. We will see tomorrow.

Really? Aside from the friends I was with, I've never met anyone else who's been there. We hadn't actually even planned on going there...we we're road tripping through Europe and when we were driving through Cologne we saw that giant church that's right by the bridge (sorry I don't know the names of either the Church OR the bridge) and we had to stop and check out the city. We ended up spending the whole day there!

Hey Susanne! Good to hear from you. Well, I did a lot of sports. Played soccer for a very short time when I was like 6 :D then I did 7 years of Judo, then I did a few months gymnastics, but that kinda sucked. Then 2 Years Handball and for two years. now I do Tricking for 2 years already, which is similar to what you can see in the video. Basically I do what I think is fun. Jumping around, sommersaults, backflips, handsprings, running up walls, stunts etc.
