Free Fall
Written and Directed by Christopher Johnson
Story by Nick Kime
----------------------------------------------------------
Schedule:
Pre Production - wrapping up prior to Aug. 15th.
Production - August 15th is the first and longest shoot date. We'll be doing all of the arial photography.
Post - Before the deadline. :)
It's an accelerated schedule, and normally I don't like to work that fast, but to get some of the footage we need, I have no choice.
*Fun Fact* - This film will mark the first time I've worked with a stunt coordinator. Should be good.

Haha, I had a similar situation in Timefest with O2 :D And the entries were as different as can be!

You can rest assured that this one won't be as ... particularly paced, shall we say, as Urashima, Inc. was.

Kyle Stebbins has agreed to lend his graphic artistry to this project. I'm excited to have him on board. This is the first time I've worked with Kyle, and even though most of you already know this, he's an up-and-comer at the speed of light.
His skills are going to elevate this entire project and I just wanted to thank him publicly.

Hadn't seen this until today, man. I really appreciate it. It's been a real pleasure working with you thus far... I can't believe I haven't seen you around the boards before. I blame myself for not "getting out" much.
Next version of poster coming soon.

LOL! It's certainly one of the more interesting head shots that I've received, but it works. :)
Had a meeting with the storyboard artist on Wednesday and did screentests with two potential actresses Thursday. Hopefully an announcement of the rest of the cast is coming soon.
I considered playing this one close to my chest, but I don't think I will. I'll post some of the storyboards in this thread as soon as I get them back from the artist.
Thanks for checking in everyone!

Updated with complete cast information.
Also, August 15th is our firm shoot date for all arial photography. We secured the plane for the whole day, and won't have to shoot around their normal skydiving business, which initially we were told we'd have to do.

Safety is our primary concern. The actors have over 600 jumps under their belts and I've got a huge list of things that have to be just right before we shoot anything.

I can promise no blood and no vampires.
We're in pretty heavy prep mode for Friday's shoot. We've got the sequences planned out and will achieve everything we need footage wise in six jumps. Then we'll shoot some additional footage with the actors and the airplane on the ground.
Mark's post made me laugh because we did discuss the possibility of shooting weightless footage in a similar fashion to Apollo 13, but I couldn't figure out any way to work a sequence like that into the script without it looking like I worked it in just to be able to shoot some cool footage. Oh well....

Nice storyboards... I'm way too chicken-sh*t to jump out of plane... goodluck with that! Should be exciting footage.

Oh, I'm not jumping out of a plane. No way. I've got a second unit director who does skydiving videos for a living.
Even if I wanted to jump out of a plane, without training, numerous hours of practice jumps, etc. they wouldn't let me.
Skydiving is a very unique culture and one that I've had to learn a lot about on this project. It's interesting stuff, but I'm content to watch on the ground.

Alright, so we had our first shoot day on Friday the 15th. We got probably less than 1/4 the amount of footage I wanted shot. Weather was the biggest culprit. We arrived at the airport and there was a thick blanket of clouds in the sky and would couldn't take the plane up to shoot any skydiving shots. We waited around practically all day hoping for a break in the weather and got nothing. So we dropped to plan B and shot as much on the ground with the actors and the plane as we could and scheduled September 13th as a pickup day, which is far from ideal, but it is what it is and we'll get the film shot! Oh yes, we will!
There was also an unpleasant surprise regarding our location agreement. We had been granted permission to shoot there, but in the interum someone brought a lawsuit against the city regarding proper zoning of the airport or some such. They couldn't stop us from shooting Friday, but our pickup day is in question, so tonight I'm going to a meeting of the airport board to plead my case for permission to film in September. If we're denied, then I've got a backup airport ready to sign release forms. It's just three hours away, so I'd prefer to use the current airport. Still, if they give me any guff I'm not sticking around and we'll drive the three hours.
I've got pics and grabs that I'll post as soon as possible. Trying to keep up with the new developments with shooting Free Fall, keep My Soul To Keep running, ScriptFest II, a legal disclaimer change for a client, and arranging a corporate shoot the first week of September has a spread a little thin, so I'll update more ASAP.

Here are some BTS pics from the shoot on the 15th. This was really the most interesting thing that we shot. Since we couldn't get anyone in the air we threw together this rig to suspend Shannon as though she were actually skydiving and shot some close up shots that way.

Wide shot. The magic of filmmaking.

A grab with some Photoshop work. This is more proof-of-concept. The finished shot won't look like this, but will rather be made to match the footage that we actually shoot while falling at 150 MPH.

Well everyone, this doesn't look good.
Saturday is the scheduled shoot day for Free Fall, which was rescheduled from August because of weather. Unfortunatly the forecast is thunderstorms for this entire week, including the weekend. The weather has been so bad here that we're definitely getting rained out again, and the schedules of all involved are not going to line up again before the TwilightFest deadline. We're still planning to shoot Free Fall, but it looks like it will have to be postponed until the Spring. It breaks my heart because the footage would have been incredible. Some of the archive footage that my stunt coordinator has is just amazing, and putting that up in the context of the story we were telling would have been fantastic.
Anyway, it is with a heavy heart that I'm withdrawing Free Fall from TwilightFest. I'll post any new updates for the film in the User Films section of the site.
To help soften the blow you can read the script to Free Fall here:
http://www.easywaterfilms.com/TwilightFest/FreeFall.pdf
If you're so inclined, please send me any feedback on the script as I still intend on making the film, when the weather will let me. :)
I'd like to take a moment and publicly thank Kyle again for his wonderful poster design. I apologize for the delay Kyle, and I thank you for your contribution.
The only bright side to come out of this is that now my attentions are focused on My Soul to Keep, the colaboration between myself and Alex Whitmer, which will compete in TwilightFest.

Additionally, here are all of the storyboards for the Skydiving sequences. I thought you might find them interesting, and help to bring the skydiving portions of the script into sharper focus for how it was going to turn out.

My Soul to Keep:
Although I wasn't hugely taken by the production, I though the story was touching. You had good elements for initiating emotional responses.

Read the script, too bad about not getting it in.
Spoilers:
From what I read I could really see the connection between Spencer and Sondra, their relationship felt realistic and not too bubbly and sickening, it was natural. That's what makes the initial death feel so painful. If that was done correctly with the visuals it would have been a powerful shot.
End spoiler
The second jump was touching and I liked where you went with it. Good ending, again really wish I could of seen it but it was a good script, well-written, good use of detail. I feel the end could be easily confused as a dream though. That was my only complaint. Kudos to your writer and hope I can check this out someday.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment, esspecially during the viewing of the other films. That really means a lot to me and I appreciate your comments.
We're still planning on shooting this film when the weather in Missouri goes back to livable.
Thanks again.
