WATCH: Calls From The Führerbunker (http://www.dvxfest.com/twilightfest/index.php?id=1400246)

SYNOPSIS

After a lengthy security screening process, janitor Chris Flegel has transferred to the night shift in a partially-abandoned area of a Canadian military base. His predecessor explains a few of the area’s idiosyncrasies, then gracefully bows out.

Dark tunnels, unused rooms, and communications equipment left over from days gone by are now Chris’ responsibility to maintain.

On Chris’ first night he hears a telephone ring. He remembers being told to just ignore it, but the incessant ringing is too much, and Chris answers the phone. Mysterious voices and transmissions can be overheard. Chris spends the next few nights trying to find the source of the voices, and after some careful research and a little snooping around, the pieces all fall together.

We don´t care at all, cause we are used to this. That kind a films pop up every other year over here.

Infact at least 40% of german movies that make it to the theaters are situated between 1930 and 1949 and have at least a view Nazis and Swastikas showing up. The same is for TV.

We had a view Hitler comedies in the last years that where controversal, cause the press started a rant that this is nothing to laugh about. But most poeple first laughed in the movies and than laughed at the press.

This movie will all hinge on a key location that I'm looking to secure. If I don't get it... this movie won't happen. Here's hoping that I do.

Mike

Mike, I believe strongly that if you really want to make this film using whatever location you need then you can make it happen. You have to be singleminded and completely focused on it. When you start off saying things like "If I don't get it ... this movie won't happen" I think you are setting yourself up subliminally. When we decided to make O2 we knew the spaceship set would cost over $10,000 and, obviously, we couldn't afford it. We had a meeting and Tim made a comment to the effect of, "well, we need to figure out what we're going to do if we can't find a way to use the Laurel Canyon set" and I told him that was the wrong attitude. We NEEDED that set and I made it my job to find some way to be able to shoot there. It took a lot of work and creativity but we got to shoot there because we adopted a mindset that we simply wouldn't accept failure.

Now, I don't know what your circumstances are or what your location is and I don't want to sound arrogant. However, I truly believe there is a way to shoot whatever location you need if you are willing to seriously make it a commitment. Just my two cents but it is a proposition we live by and which has gotten us an awful lot of mileage.

Michael Anthony Horrigan
07-15-2008, 12:49 PM
Mark, this isn't a matter of coming up with money for a set or using contacts. This involved gaining government permission to film at a historic site. The powers that be will either allow it or they won't.
I would think gaining access to a film set would be possible. This is not a set.

Cheers,

Mike

Lose that digital key pad above the microphone, and maybe run a bead of light down the telephone handset, and you have a pretty wonderful poster.

Well done.

Actually, that keypad is as old as the bunker. I'll have to look at it closer when I go back. Might just be some sort of analog keypad? I don't think it's even used in conjunction with that phone.

Have you locked permission to shoot yet or is it still up in the air? I really, REALLY hope you get permission to shoot there!

I love the pic of the guy in the gas mask...super creepy!

What a time capsule! Hell of a find.

So many things go into the success of a film, from acting, to script, to lighting and music. I think you've shown just us how important location is as well.

So far this and that eerie castle (?) in Falling really stand out.

Don't worry. The script sucks in comparison. :D

Sounds like you have QT issues.
Either that or it's my anti-penguin firewall.

Thanks to whomever bumped my thread down in the ratings.

I was bored so I threw this together. It's not supposed to look pretty or anything. Just a simple teaser.

No footage from this clip will used in Calls From The Führerbunker.

TEASER (http://www.morecowbellpictures.com/movies/calls.mov)

Getting together tonight to go over a few minor details. Might be a slight shooting schedule change.
Thought I would bump the teaser as well. :)

Mike, would it be possible to distribute that software to everyone? (Just kidding Nick!)

Good luck! How many crew members do you have on this one? How many shooting days?

I may have one crew member. Maybe.
I'm hoping to shoot the bulk of it over 3 days. Not full days of course. :)

It doesn't work that well, John. I have it and I still have to deal with me from time to time.

UPDATE: Last nights cast meeting went really well.

I'm having a serious issue though. I was supposed to start shooting next week but the manager at the bunker has not returned my calls in almost 2 weeks. She had agreed on the shoot but not the date, just saying that evenings are available with some notice. It's hard to give notice when she won't return my emails, voice mails, or messages left with the staff.

Whenever I call she is always in a 'meeting'.

It's getting to the point that I may just have to drive down there (about an hour drive) and hope that's she's there. I'm really starting to wonder what the hell is going on?
If she's not there when I make the trek I'm going to be seriously pissed off.

Just needed to vent. Hopefully things will work out.
This location is obviously key to the entire project.

WOW... this really is TwilightZone stuff... you have to appreciate the irony though. Calls from the bunker & no one answers....

No worries... keep on her and drive down there if you have to...this one is way too cool to let slip away! Go get'em'.

I plan on driving down there. I'm going to shoot this thing even if I have to break in during the middle of the night.

I remember you had a similar problem early on when you were trying to get permission for the location in the first place, but it worked itself out. Keep trying, you'll get her attention sooner or later.

Good luck on getting the bunker. I pretty much gave up on my location and started looking other places. Then sure enough the guy called and was very nice. We can use any part of the graveyard.

But it might be worth the drive for you.

Hi Mike,

we had really fun to work out what you need "from Berlin" yesterday evening. I hope very much that you will get this location.
Sometimes little simple things could help, for esample: visit this busy lady and bring her what ever, a bottle of vine and be your charming self!!!! :D

Much wishes Susanne

Well, guess what. After leaving about 100 messages with her secretary she finally got back to me. It looks like my original schedule is a little screwed but things should still work out. I'll get this done one way or the other. It may end up with me and the cast going down there for a few hours here, then a few hours there... but I'll get her done.

It always amazed me that you've been able to do so much with so few people. So few people? During TimeFest I had me, myself and I. :)

Seriously though, even though I was running around playing with the lighting, recording the sound, setting up the shot while directing the scene, I still had fun. I could definitely use a sound guy though. That would be very helpful! I'm not against help, it's just hard to find around here.

At least I'm learning all aspects of the craft. I'm going to play with the lighting a little more in this one. The shadows will be intentional. Should look good in B&W.

Cheers,

Awesome man!

I still don't know how you can do it all on your own :DIn a way I like it. The funny thing is... on my first short film I had a rather large crew. It dwindled over time. There really isn't a large film making interest around here. Toronto is the place to be for that.

It's all good though.

I just received a very important piece of the Führerbunker puzzle from a couple of German DVXuser Affiliate's. :)

So I wanted to voice a very special thank you to Jason and Susanne! Without them this movie probably wouldn't be possible. I will also be adding two German actors to the Cast section a little later as well.

I just thought that everyone should know what a great community we have going on here.

Cheers,

Mike
